Our local ABC7 news is advertising a special investigation update for the 50th anniversary of this case. The commercial mentions something about the refusal to release records. It will be airing Tuesday night at 10:00 pm.

Does anyone know if there are crime scene photos in the file? Have the files perhaps been raided by souvenir hunters?

Hhhhhmmm, I admit that I get most of my exercise jumping to conclusions.

Maybe the files are missing because a family in Colorado borrowed 'em after the brutal murder of their daughter in their house with everyone home....

Three days later, the entire family took a private jet to California and refused to directly speak with any police officers.

:waitasec:

YMMV JMHO Lather, Rinse, Repeat

I am wondering if this lawyer is representing the family in trying to get the records unsealed. He is from NY and Sharon is married to a Rockerfeller. Plus in the Channel 7 report they mention Roger, Valerie's brother, which also leads me to believe the family wants answers.
It will be a long process. Kenilworth just filed objections yesterday in court so let the fun begin.

Almost for sure, it looks like someone with (1) intimate knowledge of the the house (2) went there for the specific purpose of killing Valerie. I don't see any of the commomly named suspects who would fit (1) or have a motive for (2). To me, it looks like someone who knew the family wanted to silence Valerie for some reason. I doubt that it was a spurned love interest because surely anyone in that category, who knew the house, would have been rigorously checked out.

Indisputable points:

1 The Percy family dog (black Lab) was silent and missing during the murder, yet barked and attacked the first policeman on the scene.

2 Whoever did the killing was very familiar with the layout of the home.

3 Valerie's bedroom was cleaned and remodeled within 24 hours of the crime.

4 Three days after the crime, the entire family took a private jet to California and refused to directly speak with any police officers.

5 A call was made from the home to a mobster some time before the crime. Members of a burglary gang that targeted rich families affiliated with that mobster later accused each other of killing Valerie.

6 Mobsters and politicians in Illinois go together like wine and cheese.

7 Nothing was taken in the crime, though some accounts report a suitcase missing. (Filled with money?)

8 Valerie's remains were cremated. No evidence left there.

Chicago Tribune article...

One could almost conclude that it was a hit (or bungled hit) with inside information given to the killer.

Here is a thought to ponder.....what if the intended victim was Sharon. The murderer just spotted her out that night and followed her home. Hide outside behind the house and watched Valerie's bedroom light go on when Sharon returned the raincoat she borrowed. The killer thought Sharon's room. Left came back at 5am. Broke into the door which was in the back of house left of Valerie's bedroom. He finds the stairs goes up to last room on the right. The rest is history. No motive just a random killing.

Just a thought

What is interesting about this case, even after all of the years and the publicity, is that this murder was not an isolated incident. It was the 4th in a string of crimes committed by the same person. He was seen at or near the scene of the crimes three times (first, second and last incidents.) All of the crimes were different. First was a thwarted burglary. Second was home invasion (with two criminals seen by homeowner, who talked with them.) Third was a thwarted home invasion and this murder 24 hours later. There's no reason to believe he had anything in common with the people or places in the previous three crimes. So, if you're sitting there, cherry picking different elements of the Percy case, that makes it easy to argue he knew Percy's house, or he was after Sharon, or many of a lot of possibilities but not probabilities in light of the fact that this was the 4th in a series of crimes that make it challenging to argue he had a specific MO. Generally speaking he did have a thing for cutting screens and glass with holes in or otherwise trying to gain entry through French windows and doors.

Windward you are referring to the attempted break in right before at the Doctor's house (if memory serves me correctly) but that it was interrupted with the Doctor waking up? I have always thought done by the same guy. I don't understand why the PD did not look further into that case.
Where was the first burglary you are referring to?

It is true, one of the detectives recalled, 40 years later, that the crime scene had been redecorated 24 hours later. But in truth he didn't join the investigation until 8 days later, which would explain the redecorating as something that took place days, not hours, later.

Yes, 24 hours before. First burglary was next door, but a year and a half earlier, IIRC, Feb of '65, Smith residence. One after that was Oct. '65, Fred Wacker's home in Lake Forest. IIRC, Smith and Wacker homes had same glass cut circles as Percy's house.

Something to about the break in at the Doctor home and I think, don't quote me, there was a blue paint or smudge there or at one of the other homes that matched too.

The redecorating thing could be all the bloody bedding replaced?? Who knows. Now I really should pull out my files on this case. LOL!!

Do you know if they built a new home on the lot where the house was?

Blue paint, time of day, making noise upon entry, cutting screen... all things in common with Percy case and exactly a mile away. The redecorating observation appears to be incorrect observation by someone four decades later as he wasn't apparently at the house until 8 days later. There is a new house there, reportedly 25,000 square feet.

If you go back to page one of this thread and see JBean starting at post #9 and her sister Lakante a few posts after, they lived near where this crime took place and talk about a crime at their house the night before and how it might be related.

I will have to see if I can find a picture of it. I wonder if any weird things happen there. If ya know what's mean..
