On Saturday, Rose Starnes gazed upon an age-enhanced photo of her daughter Yasmin Acree, no longer the 15-year-old who went missing three years ago but still wearing the same soft smile and dark eyes.

It broke her heart.

“It’s a lot of times I wonder if Yasmin is still out here, but I just can’t give up hope,” Starnes said, after seeing her little girl as an 18-year-old woman. “It’s been much much too long.”

Missing 15-year-old's journal shows link to rape suspect

Yasmin Acree was often left unprotected by adults and child-welfare authorities. The West Side 15-year-old vanished in 2008. Recently the Tribune discovered what could be a piece of evidence in her unsolved disappearance — her diary, which includes references to a suspected serial rapist.

[snip]

Yasmin was referring to Jimmie Terrell Smith, who had moved into her building after serving more than 10 years for attempted murder.

Described in court records as a brutal predator, Smith is now in Cook County Jail awaiting trial on charges of raping five females, including two 14-year-olds he is alleged to have kidnapped. Smith had shown an interest in Yasmin and had contact with her after he moved out of her two-flat, including at a family friend's house shortly before she vanished, according to Tribune interviews.

In three recent jailhouse interviews, Smith told the Tribune he had vital information about Yasmin's disappearance.

"I know what happened to her,"
Smith said, although he did not admit any direct involvement in Yasmin's vanishing.

[snip]

Yasmin disappeared while Starnes was in Elgin for two days spending time with an older daughter and playing the slots at the Grand Victoria Casino. Starnes left Yasmin alone in the house with a live-in boyfriend against whom Starnes had recently obtained an order of protection because he allegedly struck her, records and interviews show.

Police declined to comment on any aspect of the case, other than to say they have not publicly identified any suspect and are considering numerous possible scenarios for Yasmin's disappearance.

I had never heard of this case prior to today, but my heart is breaking for this poor kid. She never stood a chance!

So far we have a child who was sexually abused while living in KY; a disinterested/abusive family member who adopted her who had a disinterested/abusive live-in boyfriend. Both she and her brother were relegated to the basement that had no natural light, and were beaten on occasion with extension cords/belts. The child was considered a risk to other children AND was considered at risk of sexual abuse due to the poor thing's inappropriate behavior around others AND she lived mere feet from a serial rapist/murderer? When she went missing and police were called, she was AGAIN subject to disinterest at the hands of LE.

ANYTHING could have happened to this poor girl, and none of it good.

Chicago's Black and missing

The families of Yasmin Acree and sisters Diamond and Tionda Bradley hopes the new series “Find Our Missing” on TV One cable network will bring in new leads to seemingly cold missing persons cases of color.

Yasmin Acree, 15, went missing from her West Side home four year ago this month. Her case garnered little national news coverage until now. Acree's case will be featured on 'Find Our Missing' Jan. 25.

For six years, Rose Mae Starnes led prayer vigils and marches, hosted search parties and met with Chicago police superintendents and detectives in hopes of learning what happened to her missing adoptive daughter. <snip>
Starnes, 57, was found dead Monday morning in her Oak Park apartment, said her cousin, the Rev. Ira Acree. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled Tuesday that she died of natural causes related to health problems, which her family said included diabetes and kidney failure.

Bumping for Yasmine, she must be somewhere, and somebody must know where she can be located.
