Attorneys for Alleged Kidnapper Ask Off Case

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2017-09-05/attorneys-alleged-kidnapper-ask-case.html

Is this the first official article from local media?
Article quotes the Brunos referring to the possible new charges and is reasonably assuming those to be in line with a capital offence. So when is the 30-45 days up for announcement of such charges? I guess that is when we should next hear something.
Eta 30 days from 28 Aug would be 27 Sep - so three weeks time possibly.

New attorney for Brendt Christensen

http://www.centralillinoisproud.com/news/local-news/new-attorney-for-brendt-christensen/807253831

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY - The man charged with kidnapping UI scholar Yingying Zhang has a new attorney, after his previous lawyers asked to be taken off the case.
Last week, the Bruno's filed a motion saying Brendt Christensen couldn't afford their counsel. Friday, the judge granted the request and appointed a public defender.
Christensen is currently accused of kidnapping, but it could change. The prosecution says the case is heading in the direction of the death penalty.
[.....]
Christensen asked the court to appoint him a public defender. They've reached out to a lawyer from D.C. who has taken part in cases involving terrorism.
"We will do our best to represent Mr. Christensen to the best of our abilities, hopefully to avoid the Department of Justice authorizing the death penalty and, if unsuccessful, having Mr. Christensen found not guilty and avoid the death penalty. Thank you."
The new defense said it was the last time they would comment on the case.

Public defenders on a fed case that looks like it's heading towards the death penalty. Excellent!

If the Feds are soon coming forth with an indictment for murder, I would think that means they have forensically ID'd at least some partial remains as Yingying, or could one of you lawyers explain what the probability is of bringing forth a murder indictment based solely on circumstantial evidence (no body or direct forensics)?

I really think it seems kind of stretching it for the feds to get involved in this case unless they can prove he crossed state lines. The Feds never got involved in the Gacy or Dahmer cases, this is just because we want that nutcase in North Korea dead and the Chinese want Brendt Christensen dead and we need their help with North Korea. Yes Kidnapping is a federal offense, but that law was made at a time when kidnapping was an organized crime, holding people for ransom and not really intended for sex perverts who abduct locals.

Government officials have not publicly disclosed why they believe she is dead, and attorneys in the case, including the now-released Brunos, are under a protective order that precludes them from discussing what they know.

Christensen has been indicted only for kidnapping. On Friday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan Freres confirmed that more serious charges are coming in October.

While not specifying the exact charge, it's likely the government will ask a grand jury to indict Christensen for murder during the course of a kidnapping, one of the approximately 40 federal offenses for which the death penalty is a possibility.

In October.
By which time her remains will be so badly decomposed that it is unlikely she will ever be identified positively.
what an appalling situation for her and her family..

My goodness .... what does this mean? What will they have in October that they don't have now (other than the Grand Jury findings)? I am starting to believe they know what happened to the body and it is not a thought I like. There may be no body to be found because of whatever he did to it .... this is making me feel ill.

Yingying, where could you be? Your family needs your body. :tears:

Decomposition shouldn't be too much of a problem for DNA identification. At least there's that, if she's located :(

Its more likely he incinerated her body I think as time is moving on..that means there is no body and never will be..but, surely, there is no proof of that either or they would have told her parents.. would they?

I'm thinking along this line.... did he have access to mortuary crematory or other type of incinerator? I hate to even get into this thought, but unfortunately similar has happened to a few cases here lately. What has our world come to when we start to think of this as a possible reason for not finding a body? :tears:

Err... incineration? That's really not very common, and it's not very easy. Is there any reason to suggest that in this case, other than that her body hasn't been found yet (a situation that puts her in good company with many who have not been incinerated)?

I am not sure the subject was fully investigated, actually. Public furnaces, known furnaces in the state or close to the state? Large bonfires.. something annual on the weekend june 9-12...?
