Wow, I haven't visited YY's thread in ages but I'm glad I finally did. I'm local and have heard NOTHING about these remains. No articles, no gossip, not even a whisper. I, like most others I think, am quite skeptical. But I will be watching closely again.

Not that this matters much, but I do agree with Shiressleuth that a lot of rural people work at the University. I work here at the U of I and I can attest to that, having been here 8 years. And further, by "rural," I would say 30-40 miles. More than a handful of colleagues in my small department alone live 40 miles from here. Several of them are married to farmers and work here for the excellent insurance benefits. Just my two cents!
I did, too, but in 15 years, I never once ran into someone I knew from university. And if I was going to dump a body, I'm sure not going to be stopping at store on my way through town where I might run into someone.

My point is that he could have just as safely dumped her much closer than 2 1/2 hours away. This place is just hundreds of miles of rural communities and fields.

I'm local too and only know about this because I have been on here a lot, and someone (Kelsie, maybe?) provided a link to it.

I wouldn't expect the local press to pick up on it yet because the FBI have been so hush-hush. It is also possible that someone in local media HAS heard about it, contacted some of their LE contacts familiar with YY's case, and have been told "we don't think it is her..." Either way, I also don't think they would run with anything until they have confirmed YY's family has been contacted; they wouldn't want to disclose anything until the family had been informed first.

I think we've been discussing it so much because there really isn't much else to discuss, plus the way the FBI got so heavily involved with it and involved so quickly. With YY's case being a top priority for them, the way they got so heavily involved with these remains would make you immediately suspect it might be YY...........

Checking in to this case as activity has picked up on the thread. My father was not able to confirm or not confirm if FBI is still on site, he dumps in Danville, Illinois about 45 minutes east of Champaign. I think the biggest signs that the FBI are pessimistic about retrieving her remains are that they allowed her family to go back home to China. They had to of clearly known their priority was at least getting YY remains back, the fact that they felt comfortable going back to China leads me to believe things are Grim, very grim.

Just my 0.02 I don’t believe BC dismembered her body, he’s to self centered, for god sakes, he was married and wanted an open relationship for his own sexual gratitude. At a walk for the very victim he attended, all he could do was brag about the crime he committed. Self centered, sociopath, serial killler in the making

Thanks for checking in (not clear if your father can’t comment because he doesn’t know, or isn’t at liberty to say any more?)… I’ve actually been looking each week for unusual activity at the Danville landfill using Google Maps/Earth without any luck; not even sure when those pics were taken or when they are updated.
Anyway, end of February isn’t too far away and if trial starts on time maybe we’ll soon begin to get some answers.

By February 1st, we'll have a more solid idea of when the trial will start. That's the deadline for the DOJ to inform the court if they intend to seek the death penalty or not. If they seek death, there will almost certainly be a further delay in the starting date of the trial. IF they don't, it means we will likely see the trial start on Feb. 27th as planned.......

Thanks for checking in. I was wondering about what happened with your dad and the landfill. Can he not say because he is not allowed to? Or is it that he just doesn't know?

Here's the latest on the Wayne County remains:

http://www.wfiwradio.com/2018/01/02/headlines-for-tuesday-january-2-2018/

now they are saying the remains were found inside a blanket on top of a burn pile. Makes it sound like someone was trying to burn them

confusing. First they were reporting there was a fire, then no fire, and now they are saying it was on a burn pile. no idea if they could tell how recent the burning was done. If it looks like they were burned in the past couple of months, no way it could be YY.....

I know the original story said he was burning off his field when he saw a flare. He went to see what caused it, and the blanket had begun to burn. That's when he saw the remains. I don't know how the second story was started - I'm guessing his girlfriend just didn't have the whole story when she gave her interviews to the press. It has been very dry here in southern Illinois, so I can see how the blanket would have caught fire. Plus, if it is Megan, she has been missing since July 3, 2014 - 3 1/2 years. I imagine the blanket was rotting.

Some people have said they think she is with her dad. She is not. He has been cleared. He is a sex offender, but he is one of them that fall through the cracks. He had a consensual relationship with a younger girl many years ago. He is not a person I would want to spend time with, because I think he looks like a pervert and posts some inappropriate things on his FB. So, he will never get the Father of the Year award.

Most people think Megan's bf killed her. Some think her mom accidentally killed her. I just wish the truth would come out.

If this is YY, they sure drove a long way, taking quite a chance on being caught before the body was dumped. Plus, the area where the body was found is not easily located if you aren't familiar with the area. I don't believe someone could have stopped along I64 and carried the body through the rough ground, trees, fences, streams, ditches, & vegetation to get to the spot where it was left. I think it has to be a local who is aware of the backroads in the area. Most teens know these areas because they have beer parties in the middle of nowhere.

This is JMO - I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. :blushing:

One other thing I didn't mention - That area of I64 is heavily patroled by ISP, and if you look in the Wayne County Press, you will see many tickets written during a week. If a car had been parked on the side of the road, it would have been noted and tagged if no one was with the vehicle. I would think that would have been found when they ran the plate on his car.

I am SO hoping and praying you are correct on this!

This^

A couple points about this. First, at the march for YY, BC was describing ideal characteristics of a victim, and pointing out those in the crowd who matched them. I doubt he knew many people there at all, if any. He didn't need to know or be familiar with someone and stalk them for a while to see if they would be a good target or not, and then try to track their movements. He had characteristics of a good target already in his mind. Second, earlier in the morning on the day of the kidnapping, just several blocks to the east of where YY was kidnapped, another girl reported to Urbana PD that a man in a black car tried to get her to get in his car by showing a police ID and saying he wanted to question her. While it has yet to be established if this man was BC, on the night of his arrest, the girl made a Facebook post about the arrest and stated "it sounds like it was the same b@stard who tried to pick me up." IF it was BC, he was clearly out hunting for a victim, and not stalking a particular person.

Ultimately, I think that's what this was. He was out prowling looking for a victim. He came across YY, she matched at least some of his ideal criteria of a good potential victim, she was standing alone at the stop with little activity going on around, so he circled back to her location to try and take her.....and she tragically took the bait.

I agree. I think he saw her went around the block and came up on her. Remember he is a TA. So a naive new student would maybe trust the fact that he's in a position of trust with the U of I.

Yup. He was out hunting for his first kill because his wife was out of town for the weekend and he had a window of opportunity to do it, he had his set of characteristics of an ideal victim in his mind, he saw her and she matched them to a sufficient extent, and she was alone at the stop at a time of day when that part of campus is relatively dead; so he went for it.

My wife is Chinese, and when we were talking a bit about the case right after BC's arrest, she gave me some insight on why YY might have thought it was ok to accept a ride from BC. It's late and it would take a while to write it, so I'll try to post it tomorrow.

So the autopsy is being done by the FBI in Springfield then the remains are being sent to Quantico for examination by a forensic anthropologist. Hmmmm.

It sounds to me that someone probably put the victim in the blanket and built a pile of debri and put it on top before lighting it. I think it may have already been burned before the person found the remains. The article says skeleton so it probably burned pretty good and may have destroyed a lot of the evidence that LE could have gotten.

But a fire like that unless it is constantly stirred would eventually go out and unless it was a huge pile of wood I think LE may get lucky and be able to get some DNA from the bones. Or maybe dental records if they have someone they could check against.

Hoping enough evidence is gotten to make an ID of the victim.

The scene tells me the person that did this carefully planned out how they were going to try to destroy the evidence. So whoever did this was most likely the murderer of the victim.

Just heard on the radio that BC's lawyers have filed a motion to exclude testimony of a panel of expert witnesses. More details later if I get them....

This should be interesting... "expert witnesses" at what??? (psychology? forensics? physical remains?...). I would think they'd be trying to block the admissibility of BC's secretly-taped conversations with a friend.

Still haven't seen a report on the newspaper website. I'm sure it will come later today; the reporter that covers local criminal proceedings is probably still working on the story. I remember that the radio guy said they included experts on fingerprint analysis and electronic forensic analysis; also mentioned that the Govt. had only provided them with a name of one expert witness by the Dec. 15th deadline, and they still had not provided them with a written summary of what the expert witness testimony will be....

Still no story on the News-Gazette webpage. Did hear another radio news report that provided some clarification. Govt. did provide defense with list of expert witnesses they would call to testify by Dec. 15th as required, but did not provide written summary of their testimony. So, defense has filed a motion that they be excluded from testimony. List includes specialists in fingerprint analysis, electronic forensics and cadaver dog searches. Govt. has until next Tuesday to file a response to the motion.

Cadaver dog searching piqued my interest. If the prosecution is calling someone for this, it suggests to me that they may have done a search that got a hit somewhere.

I think any number of us believe that cadaver dogs were employed in the search of BC's apt. and verified what BC had already said in surveillance taping -- that YY was taken there and killed there.

I don’t she knew him but I do think he knew her. Too coincidental that he was there just as she missed a bus. He was like a lion waiting to pounce. JMO

I believe he knew the bus routes, possibly used them in prior years?
IIRC it was mentioned YY was on the wrong side of the street for that day or something to that effect
