Not necessarily, a blood choke (rear naked choke) carotid restraints or sleeper holds are a form of strangulation that compress one or both carotid arteries and/or the jugular veins without compressing the airway, hence causing cerebral ischemia and a temporary hypoxic condition in the brain. A well applied blood choke may lead to unconsciousness in as little as 8 seconds and death in about 60 depending on the size of the victim. Properly applied blood chokes require little physical strength. Marines are typically not allowed to apply full pressure of this move during martial arts training and the Marine being choked is to tap immediately once he feels the effects.
