Home invasions on the rise

In recent months, home invasions have struck Central Indiana at an alarming rate.

Most of these incidents, however, have not taken place in areas known for high levels of crime, but in suburban neighborhoods once deemed as safe, including those on the Northside and cities outside of Indianapolis.

In Westfield, 52-year-old Marylyn Erb and her 23-year-old daughter Kelley Erb were found dead last Friday following what police believe was an attempted home robbery. That followed another home invasion in Fishers, and a series of incidents that have taken place in Indianapolis.

Those cases were among at least eight home invasions in the Indianapolis area since mid-September in which residents were terrorized, shot or stabbed.

“Based on what’s being reported,” he said, “there is no question there has been a rash in areas where people are not used to seeing these types of crimes. They also have been very violent. Things like that are going to get people’s attention.”

His neighbor, who didn't want to go on camera, says the burglar entered an unlocked patio door. The homeowner got up to investigate a strange noise, found the burglar, yelled "get out" and called 911.

Fishers Police quickly arrested 27-year-old Oswaldo Herrera. His friend told officers Herrera decided to break in as they rode their bikes past the victim's home.

The number one mistake homeowners make is leaving the alarm off for a short while. Burglars are ready the minute you leave.

The second common mistake is getting a big dog. Most big breeds, unless they are trained guard dogs, aren't barkers. Get a "yapper" because small dogs make noise.

The third mistake is tall bushes and shrubs that hide windows.

The mother told detectives she was sleeping in the early morning hours of Oct. 29, when four or five black males came into the bedroom she shares with her husband, screaming for “phones and cash.” The men separated her and her husband and then shot her in the hip area. She was then forced into one of the family’s three cars with two of the suspects, who wanted to go to the ATM.

When she realized she only had her daughter’s wallet in the car, they returned to the house to get her husband’s ATM card. The group then traveled to the Regions Bank Branch at 93rd and Meridian streets. She pulled out $800, gave it to one of the suspects and then they went back to the house in the 800 block of East 79th Street.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the 700 block of N. Bosart Avenue around 4:45 p.m. on a report of a person shot. When officers arrived at the location, they found a man, later identified as 27-year-old Anthony Talley, suffering from several gunshot wounds, including one to the head.

Thank you so much Bessie. You are always a wealth of information and so helpful to all of us.

Do you remember the home invasion case where several perps came into rob the people who lived there and when they didn't have any money to give them they repeatedly raped the one female for days and tied up the two adult men, and used power drills to drill into their kneecaps and ankles? It makes me nauseated to even write that. That is so barbaric.

It just shows we are living in some very sick and twisted dangerous times with some very dangerous people. Now the suspects don't even have to know their victims to make them go through pure living hell even if they don't murder them. And more and more strangers are doing gosh awful overkills too when that use to mean it was personal. LE cant rely on that rule of thumb anymore. Do you think it is because of drug usage?

I still say when this lowlife is found they may solve other unsolved cases in Indy. He was sure he could pull this off by being in plain sight so he has done this before, imo. If I was in LE I would check all of the break-ins, home invasions, assaults, rapes, and murders that may have happened around this time of morning.

IMO

I think the videos (which I have not seen) are pertinent in the fact that the killer very well could have watched her online. For those who have watched them, is Amanda wearing jewelry in them? Expensive clothing or anything else that would appear of resale value to a burglar?

Also, to those who have watched the videos in their entirety, since the videos are about marriage, are their daily routines ever referenced or discussed?

ie: Amanda may say "D gets up and goes to the gym early in the morning and I like to sleep in." Or D may say, "I go to the gym in the mornings and Amanda and W sleep in."

She does talk about them both being early risers to do devotionals.

One more in regards to vehicle:

If LE have the vehicle , I hope there is a wealth of evidence in it

Just as reference once again:

Both parked to one side of the drive to allow entry , exit to and from Garage.
Maybe they didn;t use garage.
Odd way to park, though, as the front one couldn't leave unless the back one was moved

Why would a criminal throw a handgun into someone's front yard? Whether it is the gun that killed Amanda or not, that is strange, unless the person that had the gun wanted it to be found...

...or if it unknowingly slipped out of some really baggy, saggy pants?

Maybe the cars were moved to allow room for LE vehicles. Who knows.

I asked about their cars upthread a while back....wondering if there were two.

If those are the Blackburn's cars in that pic, I wonder where their other car was (the one DB did not take to the gym) when the robber came. Was it not there in the driveway? Does a thief think a man leaving in one car but leaving another behind means the house is vacant?? That's weird and SLOPPY.

Perhaps to create a clear pathway and access to the garage. Note: There appeared to be a carpet cleaning company's pickup truck parked in to the rear-left of the dark-colored SUV in a recent IndyStar story.

There's this pic of the two of them in a convertible. Maybe they kept the convertible in the garage and their other vehicles parked outside on the driveway?

Well, this article is probably inaccurate, because it clearly says the photo shows the "suspect's CAR" and a guy in a hoodie. Later in the article, it says there was "also an SUV" seen leaving the neighborhood.

That's the only article I can find which suggests the car in the picture is the suspect's. All the others refer only to a photo of the suspect.
