I was going to look for other victims... but figured if they have all been one race so far, I should look there?
Serial killers often pick one race... so I thought it was relevant?

I noticed the age difference on the marriage record on Ancestry... I actually thought it could be a transcription error, since it was such a large gap. (Nothing wrong with that, for the record! It's just not something I see everyday when sleuthing or doing genealogy.) I wonder how they met?

This explains the back and forth between IN and TX I mentioned in a previous post:

The woman said the relationship soured around 2000 because “we just weren’t compatible” and because Vann had started going to nightclubs with buddies, she said.

That same year, the woman moved back to Indiana. Vann followed his wife back to Indiana, she said. While there, Vann worked at a casino, doing housekeeping, she said.

Then in 2006, the woman moved back to Texas. Vann followed, she said.

“He said he wanted this marriage to work,” the woman recalled. “I said, ‘I want my freedom.'”

They also name quite a few jobs he has held. I'm wondering how much he actually worked and if perhaps the wife might have been supporting him at least at times. I wonder what kind of an employee he was. With a lot of jobs like that I would guess not a real good employee.

He was connected to something bigger. Fbi wanted run a back ground check on him

No matter what they may be investigating or what they may thing of a person of interest LE has to be very careful of what they say publicly. Even though he rportedly confessed, even though he led them to bodies, they still have to be able to provide proof at trial that he is the one who killed the women- and his statement isn't enough to do that. They have to verify his statement- somehow connect him to the women and to the murders. Remember they have to make an assumption of innocence until they can prove different.

If they come out too early saying he is a serial killer, down the road somewhere some attorney will say that he is one of those people who makes false confessions or that he had found the remains and was feeling guilty because he hadn't reported them. And that once he confessed the LE jumped the gun and began accusing their client of the murders and quit investigating them. And if the evidence is weak, that could persuade at least one juror. The officer is being cautious and there is nothing wrong with that as long as he is also through.

Studies have been done that say statistically a serial will kill persons of the same race as themselves. In practice never exclude someone just because they are a different race. In practice there have been some killers that have crossed the race lines.

Why a motel? His other victims were found in abandoned homes. Did he kill them there? Or did he kill them elsewhere then move them to the abandoned homes?

I heard a report somewhere that after he killed the one in the motel he put her body in the bathtub, turned the shower on and left.

Ok turning the shower on would cause a housekeeper to turn around and leave. So did he have plans of returning that night and moving her?

Maybe someone mentioned this and I missed it (I've tried to read carefully, but it's late), but whether or not he was involved with Roxane Paltauf's disappearance, Lorreta Lynn Roberts sounds an awful lot like some of his suspected victims in Gary, both in her background (it seems like the women found in Gary so far have been mainly sex workers or women the killer thought wouldn't be missed) and how she was killed.

*sigh* Defeated. Seems like as soon as the police catch one monster, there's a thousand more doing the same thing! When will end??? When will others start valuing life?

Precious families....my prayers are with them.

Yeah, I don't think Jeffery Dahmer really cared what color they were................asian, black, white, made no difference to him.

Vann’s Ex-Wife Is 29 Years Older Than Him

According to Carole Carlson, Vann divorced Maria Vann in 2010. Carlson adds that according to the court records in the divorce, he lived in Austin at the time. Heavy.com reached out to Maria Vann but her phone number has been disconnected.

The Chicago Sun-Times did manage to speak to her, and she told them that she was shocked that Vann was accused of such heinous crimes. The couple had no children but she said that her former husband had been very close to the couple’s goddaughter who lived with them for a period.

She said the couple were married between 1995-2011 but had stopped living together in 2000. She is 29 years older than him. Maria Vann said that they met in Hammond, Indiana, but moved to Texas and were married there after Darren Vann enlisted in the Marines. He was discharged from the service, honorably, and held odd jobs in Texas. According to the Sun-Times, the couple split because they were no longer compatible and Darren Vann liked to go out to clubs with friends. She hasn’t heard from him since 2008.

These goofy reporters are too thickheaded to realize that when his wife divorced him, he was sitting in a prison cell there in Texas. I even read one article that stated his divorce went through because he didn't show up in court that day. Oh, well.

Victim Anith Jones, 35, of Merrillville, was one of Vann's victims. She was reported missing on October 8, and her body was found in Gary over the weekend. (Facebook)

Afrikka Hardy, 19, had recently returned to the area from Colorado, where she had attended high school. She was found dead in a motel in Hammond, Indiana on Friday, October 17, apparently after meeting with Vann. (Facebook)

Darren Deon Vann, an alleged serial killer linked to the deaths of at least seven women in northwest Indiana, was transferred to Lake County Indiana Jail in Crown Point around 7 p.m. Monday.

The bodies of six victims were found inside five abandoned homes in Gary. Sources said the victims appeared to have been killed elsewhere and left inside the vacant buildings.

"He was very specific on the locations, very specific about what transpired at each location and how they were concealed," Gary Police Det. Cpl. Edward Gonzalez said.

All seven women found appear to have been killed in the last seven months. According to statements from Vann, he may have started killing up to 20 years ago.

I was expecting that to happen pretty quickly, after what she said to Daily Mail. She was just DONE with the whole thing. Can't say I blame her. Her phone must've been ringing non-stop.

Does anybody else find it odd that the photographers were able to gain access not only to the outside of the homes, but to the INSIDE of the homes so quickly ??

Yes. I almost wonder if the pics may have been leaked. Daily Mail always gets pics before any other source, and I wonder if they pay good money for them...? I've read before that they pay pretty well for interviews. But I'm not sure what their policies are. :twocents:

why do you think this could be a possibility? did he live or travel to her area or vice versa?

Teleka's body was found in a lake near Gary, Indiana. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning, but her family believes that Dr. Patrick was murdered.

(CNN) -- A body found in an Indiana lake has been identified as that of Teleka Patrick, the Michigan doctor who's been missing since December, the Porter County Coroner's Office confirmed.

Her body was discovered Sunday in Lake Charles, west of Gary, Indiana, officials said.

The cause and manner of death are still pending further investigation, but are consistent with drowning, the coroner said in a statement Tuesday. An autopsy revealed no trauma, the statement added...

Thanks, steel. Two big questions answered. Teaira's toddler asking where his mommy is and her boyfriend not knowing what to say is heartbreaking. I hope he (the BF) reaches out to someone to help him with relaying the news in the best way possible. Poor baby.

While the facts of Dr. Patrick's case seem to suggest accidental drowning due to a mental break (JMO after following for many months), it's good to keep her in our minds. She does mostly fit his victim profile -- young(ish), black, and pretty. She was very much loved and missed, however, and he tried to choose victims he thought wouldn't be missed. (But you (general you) can't be right all the time -- Anith was reported missing by her mom, and Afrikka's friend raised the alarm immediately. Just because you think someone's life isn't valuable, doesn't mean everyone else feels that way.)

I heard a report somewhere that after he killed the one in the motel he put her body in the bathtub, turned the shower on and left.

Ok turning the shower on would cause a housekeeper to turn around and leave. So did he have plans of returning that night and moving her?

Based on what steelman posted, that LE thinks/knows that all the other 6 women were placed in the houses after death, he probably was planning to go back to move her. Maybe he thought he'd let the water run over her body for awhile to remove DNA while he left the scene for a bit to avoid discovery, and planned to move her later when he felt the coast was clear. And as you noted, turning the bathtub on would cause a housekeeper to turn around and leave, delaying/preventing discovery. (He messed up big time by giving Afrikka his real phone #, though.)

Thanks for the timeline/summary, Yoda. This article says that the 1993 arrest in NC was for traffic violations (speeding and driving without a license). http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/10...er-suspect-left-trail-of-escalating-offenses/ It also sounds like there might have been another arrest in 1993. According to the article: "in Calumet City, he pleaded guilty to aggravated fleeing from police."
