2007 unidentified female found in abandoned garage Gary In. Asphyxia due to Suffocation
* State of Remains: Burned. The burned part doesn't fir the MO , but could this be another of his victims?

http://www.ncmissingpersons.org/mis...d-persons-2/indiana-gary-lake-county-indiana/

Definitely possible! She fits his profile in age and race, at least. And the fact that she is still unidentified suggests that she may not have been reported missing, which also fits. Even though the burning doesn't fit, maybe he was trying something new. You never know. (Dang, I'm starting to feel like every abandoned house in Gary needs to be checked -- and there are a lot of them!)

ETA: Snap, Surfie, you're right. Forgot about that for a second. He showed up at that guy's house in 2004(?) carrying a gas can. Okay, this should definitely be called in.

He's threatened people with fire before, so I'd say yes.

FYI. This article gives details on a 2004 incident when he threatened to burn his girlfriend.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/10...er-suspect-left-trail-of-escalating-offenses/

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday that Vann tried to set himself and his then-girlfriend on fire in April 2004.

Vann doused himself and his victim with gasoline in Gary, wrapped one arm under the woman’s throat, and held a lighter in his opposite hand. He threatened to set them both on fire, Joe Hamer, who was a Gary patrol officer at the time, tells the newspaper.

I was wondering where the possibility of murders going back 20 years came from, apparently, that information is based on statements made by Vann.

Investigators now are trying to sort out whether there are more victims. Vann has told investigators that his killings go back some 20 years, according to Hammond police.
...and...
Doughty said Vann suggested he's responsible for even more killings beyond the seven women, whose bodies were recovered over the weekend. Investigators are looking into killings that date back to the 1990s.

"It could go back as far as 20 years based on some statements we have, but that has yet to be corroborated,"

Does anybody else find it odd that the photographers were able to gain access not only to the outside of the homes, but to the INSIDE of the homes so quickly ??

This leads me to believe that the homes were processed fairly quickly for evidence. Maybe these were just dumping spots, not the actual crime scene.

I'd suspect that the houses are not under any type of police guard and wouldn't be all that hard for a reporter or a photographer to gain entry.

One would hope that LE would do something to keep the curious out of the houses, but Gary's police force is strapped dealing with the day to day, maybe Lake County Sheriffs could step in?

It's really disturbing to think about the houses being just open like that. Especially since it's been only what, 48 hours or so since they found the bodies?

Shiver.

ALWAYS MOO

I'm just catching up on the news for this story, so sorry if some of what I have posted has been mentioned before. I found this comment interesting:
Vann apparently only wanted to discuss the Indiana cases because the state has the death penalty and he wants to be executed for his crimes,

What states has he lived in that do not have the death penalty? Illinois? Looks like he was in Indiana in 1994/1995. Moved to Texas in 1995, got married and was in the marines. Separated from wife in 2000. He lived in Northwest Indiana in 2004 and moved back and forth between Texas and Indiana until he went to prison in Texas in 2009. Was released from prison in July 2013 and has lived in Gary, Indiana for the last year or so.

Hmmm! Thank you for posting this, because I missed it. I haven't been able to read every line of every article, because they are coming out so fast. Based on what we currently know, I think you're right about Illinois. Even if he never lived there; with it being so close to IN, he likely crossed the border to commit a crime at least once.

Why a motel? His other victims were found in abandoned homes. Did he kill them there? Or did he kill them elsewhere then move them to the abandoned homes?

I heard a report somewhere that after he killed the one in the motel he put her body in the bathtub, turned the shower on and left.

Ok turning the shower on would cause a housekeeper to turn around and leave. So did he have plans of returning that night and moving her?
It's possible this was his first time meeting an escort online. Perhaps the others were women he met in bars who left with him and then were taken to those abandoned homes.

What a sad and sorry place to die. Like anyone else, these women must have dreamed of a nice place to live for themselves and their families. Instead they get this. It just isn't right.

Wasn't he also arrested in North Carolina at some point?

http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/20/us/indiana-possible-serial-killer-suspect/index.html

ETA: He was arrested in Cherry Point, North Carolina in 1993. He apparently lived there for a period of time.

Yes, there was an in North Carolina for a traffic violation. We don't know if he actually lived here or not. North Carolina does have the death penalty.

He was stationed there when he was a Marine is my guess.

Which makes it even more strange that he, as a Marine, would be dating a woman some 20 years his senior. Methinks he has some major mommy issues.

DD is a Marine and there is no shortage of women and men who fawn over them, especially right out of boot camp. They are in excellent physical condition and nice on the eyes. ;)

Alleged serial killer Darren Deon Vann under 24 hour surveillance at Lake County Jail
ABC7 Chicago Updated 56 mins ago

GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- Darren Deon Vann, the alleged serial killer who confessed to the deaths of at least seven women in northwest Indiana, was transferred to Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Ind.

He was medically cleared and is under 24 hour surveillance, officials said. Vann is being kept in isolation away from the regular jail population. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning at a courtroom within the Lake County Jail.

[...]
On Tuesday, Gary Police Department detectives using cadaver dogs are searching abandoned homes, where six of the bodies were found over the weekend. Investigators also searched Vann's home overnight.

"The investigation is still ongoing at this time. We don't know if that number is firm or will rise," Gary Police Chief Larry McKinley said.

[...]
"He was very specific on the locations, very specific about what transpired at each location and how they were concealed," Gary Police Det. Cpl. Edward Gonzalez said.

I saw a media story this morning that said D. Vann was ONLY confessing to the murders he committed in Indiana. Anybody want to guess why ? No Death Penalty.

I don't know if this was the reporters opinion, or if he was told that by a LE source. I went back and searched for 20 minutes, but couldn't find the article again.
<rsbm>

That was stated in one of the early articles from yesterday. I'll see if I can put my fingers on it.

Convicted Sex Offender Charged In Murder Of Woman In Hammond, Suspected In 6 Other Deaths

Vann apparently only wanted to discuss the Indiana cases because the state has the death penalty and he wants to be executed for his crimes, the sources told [CBS reporter Brad] Edwards. [Hammond Police Chief John] Doughty would only say Vann “was looking for a type of deal with the prosecution.”
