This came from yesterday's paper "Boy B immediately showed himself to be an intelligent young man, which gardai remarked upon." . The article also goes on to mention how "[a]sking the questions were Detective Sergeant (now Inspector) Damien Gannon and Detective Garda Donal Daly, who both have 20 years' experience in An Garda Siochana." . This is a thirteen year old boy who persistently lied over the course of five different interviews. He didn't break down at being arrested or admit the truth in the first interview. It was only as his story was shown to be untenable that he "adjusted" his narrative each time. I dread to think what today will reveal and we haven't even heard from Boy A yet.
Boy B told detectives he saw Boy A 'choke' Ana - Independent.ie

A boy accused of the murder of Ana Kriégel told gardaí he became suspicious of his co-accused shortly before the 14-year-old girl was allegedly attacked.

The jury in the trial of the two 14-year-old boys is watching a video of Boy B’s seventh interview which was conducted on July 7th, 2018, shortly after he was rearrested on suspicion of Ana’s murder.

Boy B had told gardaí in a previous interview that he went to an abandoned house with Ana and Boy A where he saw Boy A “flip” and choke Ana and take off her clothes.

It is the prosecution case that Boy B lured Ana from her home at 5pm on May 14th, 2018 on the pretence of meeting Boy A, who Ana was “interested” in. Boy A then allegedly violently sexually assaulted and murdered her in the derelict farmhouse as Boy B watched.

In interview seven Detective Garda Donal Daly told Boy B to describe his movements in as much detail as possible.

Boy B told gardaí which rooms he entered in the house. He said he “peeked” into the room where Ana’s body was later found.

Asked how Boy A looked once they were in the house, Boy B said, “he had a blank look on his face, that’s it.”

He said of Boy A: “He didn’t really show any emotions. He didn’t look sad, didn’t look happy.”

Boy B said at one point after they entered the house Boy A turned to him and asked him to leave.

Det Gda Daly asked him why he did not leave at that point. “Because when (Boy B) asked me to leave, I kind of got suspicious of him. If he asked me to leave that meant something was going to happen in terms of him and Ana.”

He said he thought they were going to kiss or that one was going to ask the other out.

Boy A has pleaded not guilty to the murder and sexual assault “involving serious violence” of Ana Kriégel on May 14th, 2018, at Glenwood House, Laraghcon, Clonee Road, Lucan in Dublin.

Boy B has pleaded not guilty to the murder of the girl on the same date.

The accused were 13 at the time of the alleged offence and are 14 now.

The trial continues before Mr Justice Paul McDermott and a jury of eight men and four women.
Ana Kriégel accused said he became suspicious of co-accused before alleged attack
[Think the journalist mixed up who asked whom to leave]

A BOY told garda interviewers that he saw Ana Kriegel and his co-accused "struggling" before the schoolgirl was "flipped" onto the ground, a trial heard.

Boy B said the two of them continued to struggle on the ground, and Boy A climbed on top of Ana, started choking her and "slowly" taking off her clothes.

Boy B told gardai he then realised that Boy A was "raping" Ana and he "had to run".

Boy A had a "blank face" and was showing no emotion while Ana was crying and begging him to stop, Boy B said.

The accused, who were aged 13 at the time, have pleaded not guilty

before the Central Criminal Court to murdering Ana Kriegel at Glenwood House, Laraghcon, Clonee Road in Lucan on May 14, 2018.

One of the boys, Boy A, has also denied a charge of aggravated sexual assault.

This morning, jurors continued to watch video footage of interviews which gardai conducted with Boy B at Lucan Garda Station on July 7, 2018.

Present in interviews six and seven were Boy B, his mother, his solicitor Barry Powderly and Detective Garda Donal Daly and Detective Sergeant (now Inspector) Damien Gannon.

Gda Daly put it to Boy B he had told "numerous versions" and the only version he wanted was the truth.

"Just the truth [Boy B]", Gda Daly said.

Boy B said he walked into the abandoned house, looked around, picked up a stick or white plank and then put it down. He walked back outside and Ana and Boy A walked into the house.

Boy B said Boy A then told him to leave.

Boy B said he stood by the doorway and watched as Boy A "took her down and stripped her". Boy B said he then ran out of the house.

Asked to describe exactly what he saw, Boy B said he saw Boy A on top of Ana, taking her clothes off.

He said he saw Boy A's construction boots, black bottoms and black hoodie.

Boy B said he could see Ana crying.

Boy B said he guessed that Boy A's backpack was in the corner.

Boy B said he was standing there, staring, wondering what he should do. He could see Boy A choking Ana.

Boy B said they were both on the ground "struggling".

Asked about Boy A's hoodie, Boy B said it was up and he couldn't really see Boy A's face, as he was perpendicular to where he was standing.

Boy B said his brain realised what was happening. Boy A then turned his face and he had "this look on his face".

Boy B said he couldn't describe the look.

Shown a photograph of a wooden stick by detectives, Boy B said this was not the stick he picked up, as the one he picked up did not have red stains on it.

Asked if he had touched the stick in the photograph, Boy B replied "no".

Boy B also described the condition of the rooms in the abandoned house, saying there was a lot of trash, rubbish and sticks lying around.

Asked to describe Room 1, which is the room where Ana's body was later found, Boy B said he saw beer cans, rubbish, rocks, sticks, graffiti and planks.

During the seventh interview, Gda Daly asked Boy B to take him by the hand and give him a guided tour of what he had seen.

Boy B said he stood at the door and saw Ana and Boy A. At first it looked like they were hugging. He couldn't see their faces. Both were struggling and then Boy A flipped her onto the ground.

Boy B said Boy A climbed on top of Ana and started choking her with his right hand. He slowly took off her jumper, t-shirt and her pants.

Boy B said he then realised Boy A was raping Ana and he "had to run".

Just as Boy A was about to take off Ana's bra, Boy B said Boy A looked up and that's when he [Boy B] ran.

Asked if he took off any of Ana's clothes, Boy B said "no".

Asked if he went into the room, Boy B said "I didn't".

The trial continues before Mr Justice Paul McDermott and a jury of eight men and four women.

He said he saw Boy A with his arm around Ana. Then he saw them “struggling”. He said Boy A got on top of Ana and stated choking her before taking off her jumper, T-shirt and trousers.

He couldn’t see Boy A’s face at this point because he had his hood up. Boy B said at this point Ana was “crying, begging, asking him to stop, not to hurt her”.

He said Boy A choked Ana with one hand. He demonstrated the action to gardaí.

Boy told gardaí he saw co-accused ‘raping’ Ana Kriégel
The horror of what that poor girl suffered leaves me speechless. :(

So first he said he heard her scream and presumed someone else was attacking her and Boy A would defend her? now he knows it was Boy A attacking her and he still ran away? Not believable in the slightest.
Boy B does come across as very intelligent, "peripindicular" is a word I barely even know how to spell let alone use it in a sentence on a daily basis now-nevermind at 13.

The contents of Boy A's bag present a serious difficulty in deflecting a charge of premeditation - the mask, the gloves, the tape, the shin-guards. Those are not generally in a backpack by happenstance.
Did they ever really intend on letting poor Ana go? Did the mask comprise some part of a sick fantasy taken from Boy A's on-line searches? Ana knew Boy A so it can't have been to conceal his identity. Regardless Boy B called to her house so he would have led them to Boy A at some stage - that or the CCTV footage. Why didn't Boy B become "alarmed" when he saw that Boy A had put on gloves and a mask? How did Boy B know that "Boy A wore the mask for “the whole incident” and never took it off." The apparent planning that went into this is horrifying.

Accused wore ‘zombie’ mask when he attacked Ana Kriégel, trial told

Boy accused of murdering girl told gardaí his co-accused wore mask for ‘whole incident’
Donal Daly told him: “This is really, really important. Was (Boy A) wearing that mask. Just the truth.”

Boy B said Boy A was wearing the mask.

Boy B also said he was in the abandoned house in a separate room to Ana and Boy A when he heard “shuffling”.

He went to the room where they were and saw Boy A wearing the mask as he was taking off Ana’s clothes. He said Boy A also had his hood up at this point.

Boy B said knew it was Boy A behind the mask because “only (he) would have it and because a couple of days before I had been in his house and he still had it.”

Boy B said Boy A wore the mask for “the whole incident” and never took it off. He agreed with Det Gda Daly that a sketch he had previously drawn of the scene for gardaí should have shown Boy A wearing the mask.

Boy A was also wearing gloves later found in the backpack as he choked Ana, Boy B told gardaí.

After further questioning, Boy B also told gardaí his co-accused was also wearing the shin-guards found in the backpack.

Asked how he knew this, Boy B said he saw Boy A bending down and touching the shin-guards while he was outside the house speaking to Ana.

The prosecution alleges Boy B lured Ana from her home at 5pm on May 14th, 2018 on the pretence of meeting Boy A, who Ana was “interested” in.

Boy A then allegedly violently sexually assaulted and murdered her in the derelict farmhouse as Boy B watched.

One of two boys accused of murdering Ana Kriegel told detectives the other boy told him he was planning to kill her a month beforehand.

[...]

In one of his final interviews with Gardaí, Boy B told them that Boy A said he wanted to kill her but he didn't think he was being serious.

When asked why he made up stories afterwards, he said he was “scared of being framed by Boy A.”

I can only guess the shin guards were to prevent injury/bruising to himself (Boy A).
Precisely - the meticulous planning that went into this is incredible.

Edit to say - just saw the above about Boy A intending to kill Ana all along. So Boy B brought Ana to Boy A knowing that Boy A did not have good intentions to say the very least - even if he didn't believe that Boy A would actually kill. He would still have known Boy A's rough plans and that Ana would end up hurt in some way. Yet he still went through with his "bit".

In the recordings heard today in court, Boy B told gardaí that he was in school when he was approached by Boy A around a month before Ana died.

“I was in school by myself. He came up to me and said ‘hey, wanna kill somebody’. I said no. He replied with ‘ah, here. Why not’. [I said] because it’s retarded. I then asked him who he was planning to kill and he replied ‘Ana Kriegel’. I replied with ‘in your dreams’. Then he just went. I didn’t think he was being serious.”

Boy B set up a "satanic" cult with Boy A as a member.

"A copybook detailing a “satanic pledge” and containing the names of the two teenagers accused of murdering Ana Kriégel was found in the boys’ bedrooms".

"The words “Satanic Pledge” were written on one page. ... On the next page were seven names including those of Boy B and his co-accused Boy A. There were various symbols next to each name."

"The book also contained a set of rules including “Don’t talk about it” and “only pledge hosts can give pledges”. The other rules were “act normal like nothing happened” and “no talking about Jesus or God, only Satan”."

This is so evil and disgusting. I'm left wondering what are the chances of two such evil kids meeting and conspiring together. But it's certainly not the first time more than one kid gets together and tortures or kills others. I'm still left astounded though that children can do this. :( What in their life leads up to being willing to rape and slowly kill a young girl?

Garda cross examined by Boy B's counsel on the conduct of the interviews. Noting that Boy B asked his mother to leave the room and his solicitor became concerned would indicate that the solicitor too knew that Boy B was about to say something of great significance. Boy B also claims that the Satanist cult was actually a homework club but so called to stop people he didn't want joining. -

"Asked if he had checked if Boy B had suffered any trauma during the interviews, Gda Daly replied, "no".

Asked if he ever contacted a doctor for Boy B, Gda Daly said, "I did not".

Mr Colgan then outlined to the court the length of the interviews, the longest of which was just short of three hours.

Mr Colgan asked Gda Daly what arrangements he had made for breaks.

Gda Daly said his function and role was to carry out the interviews, and there was a sergeant, or member in charge, whose specific role was to look after the welfare of the accused.

In one interview, Mr Colgan said Boy B's mother said she wanted to talk to him as she told gardai "you can see he's very stressed". However, the interview continued for some minutes before Boy B, his mother and solicitor left the room.

In another interview, Mr Colgan said Boy B asked for his mother to leave the room. Mr Colgan said Boy B's solicitor was concerned about this and wanted to talk to him.

However, Mr Colgan put it to Gda Daly that this consultation didn't take place for another 10 minutes.

Gda Daly they were at a "crucial point" at that stage and he was giving Boy B every opportunity to tell the truth.

During yet another interview, Boy B said he was "feeling a bit dizzy", Mr Colgan said.

Gda Daly said Boy B was brought to the back of the garda station and he bought him a can of 7up.

Inspector Damien Gannon gave evidence that Boy B was charged with the murder of Ana Kriegel on July 12, 2018.

Sergeant Patrick Duggan said that Boy B and his mother signed the custody book after he was released from custody, saying they had no complaints about his treatment."

Ana Kriégel murder accused feared he was being ‘set up’, trial hears
Bit from the link.

On Thursday morning, the trial of the two 14-year-old boys heard from five witnesses who were all in the same year in school as the accused.

The final witness, who cannot be identified because of his age, told prosecuting counsel Brendan Grehan SC he knew both Ana and the accused boys.

He said he had been in primary school with Ana and had hung around with her in a group shortly before her death.

The boy said he spoke with one of the accused, Boy A, the day after Ana went missing. He said Boy A told him he had been with Ana the previous night in the park.

Boy A had an injury, the witness said. When he asked him about it, Boy A told him he had been beaten up by two teenagers in the park.

The witness told counsel he later recognised the abandoned house where Ana’s body was found because he had gone exploring there before with a group of friends.

The witness said sometime in June, the second accused, Boy B, told him he had to tell him something and asked him not to tell anyone else. This was after Ana’s body had been found, he said.

He said Boy B told him he had gone with Ana to explore “the abandoned place” and that they met Boy A there.

Boy B told him he saw Ana and Boy A get into a “physical argument” which became violent, the witness said. “He said he saw (Boy A) get her into a headlock and get her on the ground.”

The witness said Boy B told him he saw Ana fighting back. She was pushing Boy A off and trying to punch and kick him. Boy B said he then “freaked out” and ran away.

Under cross-examination by Damien Colgan SC, defending Boy B, the witness said he had another conversation with Boy B earlier that day.

During this conversation, Boy B said he believed Boy A was trying to “snake him.”

He said he believed he was trying to “go behind his back, set him up.”

BBM. I guess this is the final witness for the prosecution, unless the defences aren't calling anyone. I've been wondering if the accused will testify (I don't think they will).

Boy A admitted to a witness that he was in the park with Ana and Boy B the day she disappeared. Boy A and Ana were alone together when Boy B left. Boy A then left and was "beaten up".
Another witness described Boy A's demeanor as fidgety and agitated in the days after the murder whereas Boy B was calm and the same as always.
Boy A and Boy B approached the witness to sign a satanic pledge which they said wasn't serious but wanted to see how many signatures they could get.

The case was expected to last six weeks with around 130 witnesses and we are about four and a half weeks in.
Two boys plead not guilty to murder of Ana Kriegel (14) in Dublin

I wouldn't expect the accused will testify. While the provisions of the Children's Act apply, they are still being tried as adults [despite leave not to attend court during Prof. Cassidy's evidence]. So if each is effectively blaming the other [depending on Boy A's evidence], Senior Counsel would easily crush a fourteen year old on the stand in defence of their respective clients.
