14 August 2018 - Gardaí identify ‘person of interest’ in Deirdre Jacob murder inquiry

The case of the 18-year-old who went missing in Kildare 20 years ago has been upgraded after new information came to light.

She was last seen close to her home in Newbridge around 3pm on July 28, 1998.

Officers say they now think she was murdered on the day she disappeared or shortly afterwards.

Her parents Michael and Bernie say they are devastated.

Her father Michael said: "When you hear those words and it's upgraded to murder, it's still a shock when you hear those cold words. We were literally stunned by it."
Her mother Bernie said: "Noone wants to hear that their child has been murdered. It's very difficult to take it."

It is understood Gardaí are focusing on a man who has spent time in prison for violent crimes against women, and is now overseas.

Chief Superintendent Brian Sutton, who is heading up the investigation, said: "There are people out there who may have information, who may have come forward with a limited information at the time.

"But now, their moral compass might have changed, their family situation may have changed, they may have kids of their own at this stage, and I ask for them to come forward."
---
Over the last 12 months, the 20-year-old investigation has been reviewed in detail by Gardaí from Kildare and the Serious Crime Review Team.

Detectives now say that as a result of new information coming to light the case has been upgraded from a missing person to a murder investigation.

Gardaí say they are following a number of lines of inquiry and progress is being made.
---
"Deirdre had enjoyed her life in London and was looking forward to returning to college that September when her life was taken away on or after the 28th July 1998."

The investigation team can be contacted at Kildare Garda Station, 045 521222 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

PS: Does anybody know if they are talking about previously mentioned suspect by MSM in this case, rapist Larry Murphy or someone else? Also suspect being overseas, wondering if in Australia or America.

Family of missing Kildare woman Deirdre Jacob hopeful people will come forward with information

Speaking to Ray D’Arcy on RTE Radio 1, Michael said that he hopes anyone who knows anything will come forward.

He said: “These people are 20 years older and maybe much more mature and can look at things in a different light.

“The main thing to do is consider what the right thing to do is. We all probably bottle up things, but in this case the right thing to do is to come forward and give that information to the Gardaí.”

Michael said any information at all could make a huge difference.

He said: “I describe this investigation as a giant jigsaw with pieces scattered around and it will only become clear when those pieces are put together.”

Michael also said that since visually enhanced CCTV footage was shown on Prime Time last week, a number of calls have been made to the incident room in Kildare dealing with the case.

Evil Irish rapist once more a person of interest for murder of 18-year-old Irish woman
Irish police have upgraded the missing person case of Kildare native Deirdre Jacob to a murder investigation as sources are naming convicted rapist Larry Murphy as a prime suspect.

On Tuesday August 13, Irish police released a statement: “As a result of new information being received, An Garda Síochána have re-classified the Deirdre Jacob investigation from a missing person investigation to a murder investigation.”

So as per links he is prime suspect not just in Deirdre Jacob (July 1998) disappearance but also Annie McCarricks (March 26, 1993) one hmm

RBBM Looks like LM was in jail in 2005, otherwise have been thinking about" our" duck sock UID found in a suitcase in the Netherlands.
The missing females were each apparently wearing " distinctive clothing".
imo, speculation.
Irish American Annie McCarrick's disappearance 20 years on, Larry Murphy still a prime suspect
Donnellan indicated that he believed McCarrick’s disappearance was not an isolated incident, and was probably connected to a string of murders of other young women in Leinster between 1993 and 1998.

Donnellan explained, “There was Deirdre Jacob, only 18, who disappeared in July of 1998. She had gone to the post office in Newbridge and we had CCTV footage of her there. She walked home in broad daylight, was seen in various places, and then just disappeared. It was obvious that she had been snatched off the street.”

“Then there was Jo-Jo Dullard, who went missing in 1995, also in mysterious circumstances. Added to that is the disappearance of Ciara Breen in Dundalk, Fiona Pender in Tullamore, and Fiona Sinnot in Wexford.”

Donnellan said he believed at least three of the mysterious cases were connected. “All three were on their own when they disappeared,” he said.

“There was never a trace of clothes found, which is unusual. In each case, the clothing the girls were wearing was very distinctive but we never came across a single item. They were each probably bundled into a car or van.”
"Larry Murphy, a convicted rapist from Co Wicklow, remains a prime suspect in Annie McCarrick’s disappearance. Murphy was jailed for 15 years for the abduction, rape and attempted murder of a woman in February 2000. He was released in 2010 and is now believed to be living in the Netherlands."

Family of missing Newbridge student Deirdre Jacob renew appeal for information as they prepare to mark 21 years since disappearance
GN4_DAT_10139978.jpg--editorial__if_you_have_any_information_on_what_happened_to_deirdre_jacob__now_is_the_time_to_act.jpg

The family of missing Newbridge student Deirdre Jacob have renewed their appeal for information as this Sunday, 28 July, marks 21 years since her disappearance.

Last August gardai upgraded her case from a missing persons to a murder investigation.

[...]

“This Sunday is the 21st year of Deirdre’s disappearance and we are making a renewed appeal for information. We know that there are people who may have information, they may not have been able to speak until now and their personal circumstances may have since changed from 21 years ago, so now may be a good time for them to come forward with this information. They can be rest assured that Gardai will listen to their information with sensitivity,” said Mr Jacob.

Noting that Deirdre apparently carried a "distinctive bag" which has not been found, just as the one carried by Shelley Morgan, found murdered in Bristol, has also not been located. A bag fetish killer? speculation, imo. fwiw.

Ex-detective says not finding missing Deirdre Jacob biggest regret of career

Missing Irish girl Deirdre Jacob, 18, pictured in her college student quarters in Twickenham, London, Easter 1998, she was last seen on the 26th July 1998.

''A former cold case detective has admitted that the biggest regret of his career is not finding out what happened to missing Deirdre Jacob.

As the 22nd anniversary of her disappearance approaches on Tuesday, Alan Bailey said he wanted more than anything to give her heartbroken parents Michael and Bernie some answers.

The retired officer, who headed up the Serious Crime Review Team at the time, told the Irish Sunday Mirror that the case resonated with him on so many levels as he has a daughter close to the same age as Deirdre.''

''On the day she went missing she was wearing a navy T-shirt with white trim on the collar and sleeves, navy or black straight jeans and blue Nike runners.

She was also carrying a distinctive black satchel-type bag with long shoulder straps and the word CAT in large yellow capital letters printed on the front.
The bag has never been located, and gardai are interested in hearing from anyone who has ever found or noticed a bag similar to this.''

''A file is currently with the DPP after officers submitted it in February regarding the disappearance of Deirdre and whether charges can be brought against rapist Larry Murphy in the case.

If the DPP decide to press charges against Murphy, a European Arrest Warrant will be sought.

He became a person of interest to detectives after it emerged he had visited the shop owned by Deirdre’s grandmother.

A prisoner also alleges Murphy told him in jail he had kidnapped a young woman outside Newbridge while pretending to ask for directions.''

I think of all the 'vanishing triangle' cases, this is the one that LM is most likely responsible for.

I would have him as likely suspect for Jo Jo Dollard and possibly Annie McCarrick also though.
