Israel and Hezbollah trade border fire

Lebanon’s Hezbollah fired a guided missile at an Israeli tank on Tuesday afternoon, according to reports, and Israel said it responded by striking an observation post belonging to Hezbollah, in a third day of violence at the Lebanese-Israeli border.

The Israeli army said no injuries were reported in Tuesday’s attack by Hezbollah, three of whose fighters were killed on Monday in Israeli shelling into Lebanon. Reuters reported.

A salvo of rockets was also fired from Lebanon into Israel, in an attack a security source in Lebanon said was carried out by Palestinian factions, according to the news agency. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said a helicopter struck an observation post belonging to the Hezbollah. No injuries were reported, it said.

Militants killed whole families in border village

Reporters have today been visiting the village of Kfar Aza - the site of a massace committed by Hamas near the border with Gaza.

Until this morning fighting was still going on in the kibbutz. That's why Israeli soldiers are only now collecting the bodies of residents who were murdered.

Soldiers told the BBC's International Editor Jeremy Bowen that Hamas stormed in, burning homes and killing families.

An Israeli officer said some of the dead had been beheaded.

Palestine needs to condemn these atrocities

Are Hamas their representatives, does Palestine stand by their actions? Yes or no? Palestine must tell us loud and clear which one it is. We are watching and listening.

Well @JennieM, much like Hitler, Hamas was actually voted in by the population.

Also, IMO as we see all these mass gatherings of Palestinian supporters around the world, they are unanimous in condemning Israel but not Hamas.

IMO that’s the answer to your question.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party said it was taking “big steps” towards forming a unity government on Tuesday.

A party statement said Netanyahu invited the head of the key opposition National Unity party, Benny Gantz, to meet tonight.

The statement comes after an earlier announcement that all partners in Netanyahu’s coalition had approved a proposed expansion of the government to include politicians now in the opposition.

But who will speak for Palestine?

The Palestine National Authority, ostensibly the ruling force in Palestine is a Fatah-controlled group that has no power in Palestine, either Gaza or West Bank and has not even had an election in 15 years. The perpetual president since 2005, Mahmoud Abbas gave a statement to the UN asking for the UN to stop Israeli aggression, never once mentioning HAMAS or any acts of violence started by Palestine.

So Mahmoud Abbas is merely the tepid sham of a President whom HAMAS tries to hide behind.

I don't see PNA or anyone in Palestine government condemning the HAMAS attack.

We should ask their leader.
Oh yeah! He’s not in Gaza. He lives in the lap of luxury in Qatar.

Recent polling says they’re still very popular, with majority support. If history is any indication, they’re now as popular as ever.

EU to continue support to Palestinians

Lisa O'Carroll

EU foreign ministers reversed the decision by the European Commission to suspend payments to Palestine after an emergency meeting in Oman.

The EU’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, said they can review the funds to check for any “leakage” to Hamas, but if there is someone will have to pay the price for such a mistake.

“The overwhelming majority [of ministers] was against the idea of the proposal of suspending the payments to the Palestinian Authority. This is the thing that matters,” he said adding the funds would “not be cancelled”.

He said just two or maybe three countries disagreed, with speculation rife that Hungary was one of them following the unilateral announcement by the country’s commissioner in Brussels on Monday that all payments were being suspended.

Humanitarian aid will also be increased, said Borrell, who added that the EU is the biggest funder of the Palestinian Authority.

Figures released on Tuesday by the European Commission show €410m was given to the PA in 2021 and 2022 with 2023 funds yet to be allocated.

A further €271m was donated by the EU to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for humanitarian projects in the three years 2021-2023, the commission revealed.

Biden concludes call with Netanyahu

US President Biden, Vice-President Harris, and other senior administration officials have just concluded a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The president posted on social media that his team spoke to Netanyahu to "receive a situation update on the terrorist attack in Israel and to direct next steps."

"We connected with Prime Minister Netanyahu to discuss coordination to support Israel, deter hostile actors, and protect innocent people," he said.

We are expecting to hear from President Biden soon in a short address about the conflict.

No-one here expected Hamas could kill so many like this

Jeremy Bowen
International editor, reporting from Kfar Aza kibbutz

The residents of the Israeli border communities expected periodic rocket attacks after Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007.

They accepted the danger as the price of country life in a tight-knit community which still had traces of the pioneer spirit of early Zionist settlements.

Residents of Kfar Aza, and the other Israeli communities near Gaza, enjoyed good quality of life - despite the threat from Hamas rockets.

In the houses, lawns and open areas of the kibbutz, a concrete shelter was never more than a dash away.

All the houses also had reinforced safe rooms. They also had outside terraces, barbeques, swings for the children, and fresh air.

But no one - here in Kfar Aza or elsewhere in Israel - imagined Hamas would be able to breach Israel's defences and kill so many people.

The horror and rage of Israelis has been mixed with incredulity that the state and the military failed in its fundamental duty to protect its citizens.

Hamas confirms deaths of two officials in Gaza

We reported earlier that, two senior Hamas officials had been killed in air strikes in Gaza, according to the Israeli military.

In that post, we said Hamas had not yet confirmed the deaths of Zakaria Abu Muammar and Jawad Abu Shamal, members of the Hamas political bureau. It has since released a statement doing so.

The laws of war must be upheld - UN

The United Nations (UN) humanitarian relief agency has called for an immediate release of all hostages in the conflict.

Its chief Martin Griffiths said in a statement that his call to all sides was "unequivocal":

“The laws of war must be upheld. Those held captive must be treated humanely. Hostages must be released without delay."

Questions continue to crop up regarding whether or not Iran had any involvement in the Hamas attack on Israel. We should educate ourselves on Robert Smalley the ex US envoy to Iran. It should be noted that Iran continues to deny any responsibility for or involvement in this terrorist attack.

More savagery.

Indeed!
I can only hope that the (so far) innocent Palestinian cheer leaders will buy a vowel.....and get a flippin' clue.....THEY ARE GOING THE WRONG WAY !!! Their world is upside down, and inside out.
And, it needs a massive over haul to right it. RIP to all victims of this terror.

MOO and Peace

I've been watching the flight tracker to see how busy the airport is. I thought with the attack coming from Lebanon/North of the airport maybe things would slow down some. I notice not as many flights leaving, but seems plenty are arriving. Most notably the Spanish Air Force and currently there's a plane approaching from Mexico's Air Force. Maybe coming in to bring their citizens out?

What a joke.

UN warns 'clear evidence' of war crimes committed in Gaza and Israel

There is already “clear evidence” that war crimes may have been committed in the latest explosion of violence in Israel and Gaza, the UN’s human rights council said.

In a statement, the UN’s independent international commission of inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territory called for all those who have violated international law and targeted civilians to be held accountable for their crimes.

It said it had been collecting “evidence of "war crimes committed by all sides” since Saturday, when Hamas launched its attack on Israel. The UN said:

Reports that armed groups from Gaza have gunned down hundreds of unarmed civilians are abhorrent and cannot be tolerated. Taking civilian hostages and using civilians as human shields are war crimes.
The commission said it was also “gravely concerned” by Israel’s announcement of a complete siege on Gaza. The withholding of water, food, electricity and fuel “will undoubtfully cost civilian lives and constitutes collective punishment”, it said.

It urged Israeli security forces and Palestinian armed groups “to adhere strictly to international humanitarian law and international human rights law”.

The Commission emphasises that the only path towards ending violence and achieving sustainable peace is through addressing the root causes of the conflict including through ending the illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and recognising the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
