I don’t really understand how air pockets work in a completely submerged vessel. Unless there’s a watertight room, or a section that’s still above the water level, surely the whole boat is going to quickly get full of water?

I would think there would be quite a few small air pockets that form in a capsized and submerged vessel. But they would be fairly small, and it is totally dark. So the chances of a person finding one would be small. And even if they did, it is still totally dark, the air pocket is small and the oxygen would be depleted pretty quickly. Personally, I don't think anyone on this boat survived in an air pocket for more than an hour or so if they were able to find one.

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily, Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News. Two passengers remain missing.

Cocina did not say whose bodies were found, but the discovery follows a dayslong search in the deep seas off the Italian coast where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and several others were believed trapped in the luxury sailboat's hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm while anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city of Palermo...

The chef will have been done for the day- getting ready for his breakfast schedule by sleeping- everything else is left to the rest of the crew, including some of the deck crew being on observation all night. One of the crew activated the life raft, which saved many lives including passengers who had gone to bed. They survived as they were awake and still working to get ready for the following day

Having seen a floor plan (there was a master suite and another bedroom), some passengers who you would not assume are in cabins together seem to have escaped (and at least one the mother and baby were in bed). The wife could have still been up and in the lounge, leaving her husband and daughter asleep in the master suite.

Speaking to Sky News correspondent Ashna Hurynag, the head of paediatric care at the Di Cristina Children's Hospital in Palermo said Ms Golunski was away from her partner at the time of the storm.

"She said that she was sleeping with the child on deck while her husband was a little further away in another part of the boat and she felt the oscillations of the ship," Dr Domenico Cipolla said.

Search and recovery operation will resume tomorrow - Italian authorities​

The search operation in Porticello has finished for the day and will resume tomorrow, the head of Sicily's civil protection agency has told the PA news agency.

Salvatore Cocina confirmed that five bodies have been found, but only four have been recovered from the water.

One person remains missing, Cocina adds.

Were storms forecast for this area? If they were, how well prepared were the crew? What sort of watch was being kept on the bridge? If storms were forecast, anchoring with the keel up looks like a massive oversight.
