''Watch live as a search and rescue operation is conducted in Italy after a a British-flagged luxury superyacht carrying foreign tourists sank in a whirlwind and rough seas off the coast of Sicily on Monday, 19 August. The 56-metre (184-foot) “Bayesian”, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, representing British, American and Canadian nationalities, the Italian coast guard said, when it capsized at around 5am off the port of Porticello_One person is feared dead and six more are missing.Four Britons are reportedly among the missing while a further 15 people, including a child, have been rescued after the sailboat with 22 people on board sank in the early hours of Monday near the Sicilian capital Palermo.Fifteen people were rescued initially and taken to shore at Porticello, where eight were in the hospital. One body was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for, said Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire and rescue service. Those who had not been rescued included one member of the crew and six passengers, the coast guard said.''

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch is missing off Sicily's coast after a yacht sank, Sky News understands.

One person is dead and six others are missing after a UK-flagged superyacht named Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily in a storm.

Sky News also understands the yacht is owned by the family of Dr Lynch.

It comes just weeks after Dr Lynch, 59, was in June cleared of all charges by a US jury in the high-profile fraud case related to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.

''He studied physics, mathematics and biochemistry at Cambridge University, eventually specialising in adaptive pattern recognition. His doctoral thesis is reportedly one of the most widely read pieces of research in the university library.
After launching a few early technology start-ups – including one that specialised in automatic number-plate, fingerprint and facial recognition software for the police – he created Autonomy in 1996.''

'Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was among the fifteen people who were rescued from the 180ft yacht, which she is reported to have owned and had been carrying ten crewmembers, the owner and 11 guests. '
There are fears that those who are still missing became trapped in their cabins, with divers earlier reporting that they saw 'bodies through the portholes' of the yacht, according to Italian media.''
''The tragedy comes just weeks after Lynch was acquitted of criminal charges by a jury in San Francisco in June, vindicating the entrepreneur after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011''.
The British-flagged Bayesian is thought to have arrived in Porticello after a stopping in Milazzo, around 100 miles up the coast towards the Italian mainland

'A British mother on board a yacht which sank off the coast of Sicily has described holding her baby girl above the surface of the sea to save her from drowning.''

''For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves,” the paper quoted her as saying.

Charlotte said she held her baby "afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning".

“It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others," she added.''

What I don't understand is why so many people were on the yacht.

According to news articles, the yacht could accommodate 12, in 6 staterooms.

Bacares, Lynch, and their children account for 4. They had 10 crewmembers and one wonders what their accommodations were.

But why were 8 guests on board? Friends of the family? The yacht seems very crowded even given its vast size and comforts.

CG, the mother of the baby, is a colleague of Mike Lynch, and my guessis that the other guests are also his colleagues + their partners. I don't think the yacht was that crowded, as it could accomodate 12. Most likely they sailed along the coast, from port to port, perhaps during the night, so there would have plenty of time off the boat.

As for the crew, their cabin are small, and tucked away, do a seach for "crew cabins yacht" to find photos.
