I would probably find it easier to believe that the radiation isn't likely to be a problem in the US because it is going to disappate if I didn't watch so much PBS.

Dust and smoke from Africa has been found in S. America. Smoke and lava residues of volcanos hundreds of miles away has been found in the Artic. If dust, smoke and lava ash can travel and survive that far, why wouldn't radiation and the byproducts from the reactors?

I know that the majority will most likely fall into the ocean, but IMO and uninformed mind I have trouble believing that all of it will end in the ocean. I wonder how many detectors they have on the western side of the Rocky Mts?
We get dust from the Sahara every summer here. It is tracked across the Atlantic and sometimes really helps to dissipate the hurricanes.

Yes, that's what it means. Elderly patients were moved from a hospital to a school being used as a shelter. Two people died on the bus on the way to the school/shelter. Twelve others died not long after arriving to the shelter.

officials say 128 hospital patients were taken on Monday to a relief shelter in a high school in Iwaki city. Two of them reportedly died en route, and 12 others died shortly after arriving

Awww, how very sad...to have gotten through the quake and tsunami and die just after. My prayers are for their families.

I agree, mysteriew. I am one of those proactive folks that tries my best to limit & reduce the amount of radiation my loved ones & I are exposed to.

When I hear public officials saying "the amount is miniscule" or the "the radiation will be diluted by the time it reaches the West Coast", I am reminded of the fact that all radiation exposure to living tissue is cumulative.

IOW - radiation is absorbed and it doesn't go away without having an effect.

OMG. I am such an idiot. I don't know why I didn't make the connection sooner. My husband is the healthiest person around. I mean, he is 48 and he either runs or bikes almost every day. All of his blood work is great. His weight is excellent---in fact, he really irritates me by how healthy he is. 2 years ago at a routine exam they discovered he has hypothyroidism. No history of it. Nothing. Except he grew up and was living in a town that is 15 miles from TMI. He was living there when the nuclear accident occurred. I have to wonder if there is a connection?

I talked to my 2nd dad (my best friend's dad) today who is an engineer who has worked in nuclear power for many years. He says the uranium it's self would not likely explode. It is very hard to explode a reactor. You will get hydrogen explosions. Chernoble was a steam explosion not the reactor it's self. He also said all these other elements that are being released are breakdown products of uranium. He told me the workers have no protection from the radiation. They can protect themselves from the dust and neutron penitration but the direct radiation. The people on the island will get radiated but our west coast is safe. He says it will disapate in the air and some will fall to the sea. I hope this helps. It helped me.

Thanks Rpipergirl, I feel much better after reading your post. The thought of that cloud passing overhead sometime Fri morning has me feeling faint. It is so unfair to suddenly read that there is a cloud, it is on it's way and who knows how many clouds will follow. . . . xox

ETA: Sorry as that was pretty selfish to say. Our thoughts should be with those in immediate danger in the Japan area. I was in a state of shock to read that.

I did learn too that Oregon has 2 radiation detectors, one in Corvallis and one in Portland: http://www.oregonlive.com/health/index.ssf/2011/03/oregon_health_officials_reassu.html

You would think the snow would have done that, right?

I don't think that a brief snow shower is the answer to this crisis, especially considering that the spent fuel pool is still not fully submerged with circulating water to keep it @ the appropriate temperature.

So he was a teen? Possible... NOT CONFIRMED!

Ugh... the after effects... we live em...

lkhns,

I can tell you it will be denied until "their" dying day...

Nothing to report here... Central PA... out

Helicopters deployed to dump water on the facility on Wednesday have been pulled out amid concerns over radiation.

Of course, I don't know if they mean this most recent round or if they are referring to the first time they tried this, but I am really sick of getting Wednesday's news when we know it's Thursday over there already.

R. Maddow's show (MSNBC) is coming up at the top of the hour-- she had a great segment on the amount of fuel at each reactor... within the first 10 min.

0355: Pressure is rising again at Reactor 3, the power station operator says - Reuters. That reactor includes plutonium and uranium in its fuel mix.
0352: The temperature of Reactor 5 is now a growing cause for concern, a Japanese official reports. "The level of water in the reactor is lowering and the pressure is rising," he says.
