The tainted milk was found 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the plant, a local official said. The spinach was collected from six farms between 60 miles (100 kilometers) and 75 miles (120 kilometers) to the south of the reactors.

Those areas are rich farm country known for melons, rice and peaches, so the contamination could affect food supplies for large parts of Japan.

More tests was being done on other foods, Edano said, and if they show further contamination, then food shipments from the area would be halted.

Officials said it was too early to know if the nuclear crisis caused the contamination, but Edano said air sampling done near the dairy showed higher-than-normal radiation levels.

Too early to know of the nuclear crisis caused the contamination? Really?

BBM for emphasis

I wouldn't be all that shocked to find out these reactors had leaked radiation prior. Their track record is not very good and they have been busted a few times. I am curious to know if any of the food was already contaminated.

You called this JBean.

I wonder what the childhood thyroid cancer levels are in the areas surrounding those plants are historically?

Was there any levels of increased childhood cancer levels already in Japan in the areas where these foods were transported to?

Interesting.

If cooling fails, Japan may bury reactor

Quote: Beyond the gates of the Fukushima plant, medics, working around the clock at hospitals within the 30km zone where residents have been told to remain indoors, described a situation where people were not prepared to deliver vital supplies inside the zone.
Those who could not leave -- the elderly and sick -- were being starved of food, fuel, water and medicine and "left to die".

'Nothing can prepare you to witness this'

ISHINOMAKI, Miyagi Pref. — It's a relatively minor incident that gets me. I'm at a gymnasium in central Ishinomaki photographing members of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) as they unload dozens of corpses from a truck. Each is wrapped in blankets, some with flowery designs far too cheerful for this occasion.

Intense article... bless the efforts of those searching/recovering.

From the same article

but Japan has now arbitrarily raised that number to 250 millisieverts for no justifiable reason. (Radiation didn't suddenly become less dangerous overnight, unless the laws of physics suddenly changed and nobody told us about it...)
