So... any estimates on how long it will take these pumps to be brought in?

All I'm finding is vague statements... here's another--

No Quick Fix at Japan's nuclear plant

Excerpt:
Restoring the power to all six units at the tsunami-damaged complex is key, because it will, in theory, drive the maze of motors, valves and switches that help deliver cooling water to the overheated reactor cores and spent fuel pools that are leaking radiation.

Ideally, officials believe it should only take a day to get the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear under control once the cooling systems are up and running. But it could take days or weeks to get those systems working.

*sigh* Well, that's reassuring, considering it could all go KABOOM! at like, any second.

Earlier I posted that I was supposed to have "thyroid uptake" done tomorrow - received a phone call saying "the isotope pill I'm supposed to take, is at a shortage!" !!! My appointment was postponed to Wednesday, when they will have a new supply! So even hospitals are at a shortage of these iodide pills!!

and again THANKS to all for all the great links!

Surely you'll get what you need by Wednesday Niner~ Those iodide pills became scarce real quick- I was checking amazon and everyone was out of stock. So while browsing other forums to do with buying them, I read posts by people discussing their experience in purchasing them.
In one instance his online seller was sent a note from the supplier saying that his supply was halted and it's to go to Japan. I'm glad I grabbed that bottle of betadine now.

Radiation 1,600 times normal level is detected 12 miles from Fukushima plant, IAEA reports - Kyodo News

STFU!

Officials: 'Miniscule' amounts of radiation detected in Wash.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - State Department of Health officials say they have detected trace levels of radiation in Washington from Japan's damaged nuclear reactors.

Also, from your link:

...Officials say there is no health risk from the radiation and people shouldn't take potassium iodide pills.

Well that's a relief.

Three large quakes rock Japan as IAEA radiation tests begin near nuclear pkant

Excerpt:
Fukushima nuclear power plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) was also examining seawater at four locations. In an initial study Monday, levels of radioactive cesium were reportedly found to be 24.8 times higher than normal, while levels of radioactive iodine were 126.7 times higher. Testing prior to the March 11 disaster found no radioactive substances in seawater.

Japan is home to a billion dollar fishing industry which supplies its own market as well as providing at least 10 percent of the world's catch, second only to China.

Tokyo Radiation Levels 4 Times Higher Than Normal, But No Harm To Humans

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Radiation levels in central Tokyo remained about four times higher than normal levels Tuesday evening, but the amount is not enough to cause immediate harm to the human body, said an official at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government said Tuesday on its website that radiation levels in downtown Tokyo stood at an average 0.138 microsievert an hour around 0800 GMT, compared with the 0.035 microsievert an hour a person would typically be exposed to in central Tokyo due to background radiation.

Peli, while you're here-- what do you think about that tank? Link above, but I'll get it..

http://winnipeg.ctv.ca/tl/photo.htm...AP / The Yomiuri Shimbun, Takehiko Kobayashi)

Morning Quiche, just missed you yesterday. Read this last night and being somewhat familiar with the T-72, I had to think about it some.

I read Holly's reply and it makes sense.

The government Monday also planned to engage tanks of the Self-Defense Forces to clear quake-created building rubble near the reactors. Use of trucks for the job has not been possible because of the high-level of radiation at those locations.

One can move alot of things with a T-72, it can move through or over most obstacles. I've been in one once as it made a path through wooded trees to make a rendezvous with another unit. I suppose there are some limits on the diameter of tree in question.

I'm thinking the main use is to seal someone inside while they work, without exposing them to radiation for short periods of time. I also imagine it gets HOT inside the T-72.

"Radiation 1600 times normal levels 12 miles from reactors"

This was just on FOX - sorry no link yet. They were discussing this with a scientist and that was the banner underneath.

I'm sorry but 1600 TIMES normal? That can't be good and I don't see how anyone left inside that radius could NOT have radiation poisoning.

This morning when I woke up,on the radio news( Fox), they had an alert and I swear they said there were new explosions at the plant. I was half asleep, but think I heard it correct. Did anyone else hear or see that?

This video from Today Show gives a look inside a US nuclear power plant.

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/42208800#42208800

As we watched this piece, my daughter informed me that her (estranged) hubby's (who is in training with GE) job is to keep the pools clean which house the rods. She said that he has to wear protective clothing and most likely the clothes the reporter wore were removed and burned as that is the practice. She also informed me that he was slated to begin work in Japan for a year this spring at one of the Fukushima plants and this contributed to their breakup because she didn't wish to go to Japan.

I was helping her move out of their home yesterday and we took the ferry back to my place. The ferry landing is next to the Brunswick nuclear plant which looks much like the Fukushima plant. We were discussing possible effects to our area in the event of disaster as we waited for the ferry and watched the steam from the plant emmiting into the air.

This area is prone to hurricanes and the plant has withstood some powerful ones but we were wondering 'what if' there were an earthquake and tsunami. The plant is on the river and separated from the Atlantic by a barrier island but I really doubt that would do much good protecting it from a powerful tsunami like the one in Japan. As we drove onto the ferry and began moving away, we decided that we shouldn't worry because earthquakes on the east coast are rare.

Well guess what? This was on our local news this am.

http://www.wect.com/Global/story.asp?S=14295559

It was only a 2.9 but still......I immediately went to the medicine cabinet to locate those potassium iodide pills that we have stored away.

I am still praying hard for the Japanese people and hope their suffering ends soon. It's going to be a long road to recovery. I'm happy to hear that they have electricity restored to the plant now. Hopefully, the tense situation there is easing somewhat.

i'm suprised we've haven't seen more stories of americans missing. I've only seen the story of taylor anderson who was found deceased. So sad for all families missing loved ones

hockeymom, I haven't heard that. I read there were 2 more quakes in Japan. One was a 6.6 IIRC.

They are getting some really big earthquakes too, one on top of another since yesterday. Let's hope these are just aftershocks - I know that after the Chile earthquake last year they had many large aftershocks for months.

Troubled Nuclear Plant Reconnected to Grid

TOKYO—Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Tuesday that external power has been reconnected to all of six reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, in modest gains by Japanese authorities to contain a crisis at a heavily damaged facilities that has become a matter of international concern.
