My Rolex was bought for around 10k and by the time it got stolen was worth 16k in the second hand market. There are also "grey sellers" who sell hard to get items, for an increased price. It can be hard for someone without a purchase history to walk into a Rolex and buy the one they want.

Sorry to hear yours was stolen hopefully it was insured and you got a payment ..I'm delighted with all these answers to my question as my original thought was surely watch has a paper trail I wonder has it since been reported stolen from the victim of the theft

A) he got caught up in stealing a watch
B) The person he "happened" to steal a watch from was in a "crime gang" himself?
C) Said person managed to find out within 2 hours who stole it and that they were an hour a way in a very unlikely location?

It's highly probable that a guy walking around thar area of Tenerife wearing a genuine Rolex is involved in some capacity with organised crime. The fact that the theft wasn't reported to the Police would support that. The watch could have been legitimately owned by the individual it was stolen from, but generally members of organised crime fraternities don't go to the Police when they've become the victim of a crime. They deal with it internally.
One of the two occupants of the AirBnB (who can't be named here due to forum rules, but has been named in MSM) has a criminal background, and if his Social Media history is anything to go by, is a bit of an arrogant loudmouth who fancies himself as a 'real gangster.
I suspect that the two AirBnB occupants were the ones orchestrating the watch theft. Bear in mind that Jay is only 19, suggestible (JMO but his pre-tenerife history paints him as a follower rather than a leader) and likely starstruck by the criminal backgrounds of these two men. It wouldn't take much to convince him to play a minor role in a watch theft, especially after a few drinks and the promise of a cut of the profits.

They get in the car and head up into the hills to catch him.

The next part is anyone's guess. Tony and Whitey either catch up to Jay, or Jay gets further into the brush and ends up succumbing to shock/dehydration/heat.

After alerting the Police, Lucy gets in contact with Jay's social circle to find out what everyone knows, and advises Jay's mum of the situation - including the watch theft - prompting Jay's mum to assume that the two men have captured her son and pleading for him to be let go.

The more I think about this, the more it makes perfect sense. Particularly Jay's decision to go North as opposed to South, and the fact that Ofelia remarked that he was 'walking fast'. Bearing in mind that according to his stepfather, he was not fond of walking at all. This isn't the kind of guy that goes on a hike because it's a nice day out. He had to have a reason for going that direction. I think the reason was losing the two men.

Obviously I don't know anything about you but I'm going to assume you are older, more law abiding and less into the drugs scene than the three people involved and thus are applying what you think you would or wouldn't do. Nothing about that is surprising IMO

I agree. I suspect possible scenarios are being called "absurd" because the crowd we are discussing vacations in a very different scene than most of us on WS do, and it just seems unbelievable. I don't think the theft sounds absurd at all.

Despite that, I think he got lost in rugged terrain.

Does anyone actually believe that Jay had the wits about him to steal an expensive watch. Pick pockets are usually highly skilled in the technique. In all we have seen and read about Jays condition on that night he seemed totally out of it and also fell over in the club through drink and whatever else he had taken. MOO

That message, as reported by Jay’s mum on day 2 or 3, is what first alerted the world that something other than “got lost on the way home” was going on. I know it’s massively snowballed since then, to ridiculous heights, but this has never been a typical missing hiker case.

Probably, but not definitely. If the two men are associates of LL, it would not be particularly difficult for one of them to trace Jay's Mum's Snapchat via friends of friends/alternative Social Media.

It's 100% the kind of thing one of them would do, going by his previous social media posturing (assuming the identity is correct, and JMO obvs).

Snapchat info is always frustrating as it’s so vague! And there are so many options and possibilities when one says Jay “posted” the watch picture. To me, this info implies three possibilities:

1. Jay posted this to a main, public STORY of which any of his friends / followers could watch, send to each other and screenshot. This would be a really silly thing to do and certainly, as @Kassandrra said, could initiate a fight between the three of them as it would show a lot of people what they had done.

2. He posted it onto a private story, where Jay was able to select and decide which individuals could view. This means most likely a small group of people close to jay could view and screenshot the image.

3. Jay only sent this image to a handful of friends / whoever he wanted to show off the watch to. I think this is what he did.

EDIT: Also, once a Snapchat is sent once, it is deleted. Unless!!! The recipient SAVES the picture in the chat or screenshots it immediately upon opening it. You can’t save a snap any later than about 30 seconds. I wonder if anyone actually HAS the photo saved or is this just what his friends have said?

Makes sense, the way you have laid it out. In addition, we now know that Jay had been socialising with the two men from the AirB&B for the previous two days, so they may have filled his head with boasts about their exploits, hence his willingness to travel with them to where they were staying.

JMO but one issue with this is why would LL publicly post JS screenshot location on the Tenerife FB group if she knew these two guys were looking for him or if she thought he was in any danger from anyone looking for him
