So much absolute frenzy and so many accusations slung for an outcome that will likely follow Occam's Razor.

"The Civil Guard says while a formal identification needs to take place, "all evidence suggests" the remains are those of Jay Slater and that he may have suffered an accident or a fall."

Moo..his friend Brad said he could hear Jay sliding on gravel. It is easy to slide downwards on gravel, where as trying to climb up loose rock and gravel you basically have to climb on all fours to get traction. The first slip would explain how he went off road at start and got lost....moo

I did wonder if he may have taken evasive action to avoid an oncoming car or something and ended up ‘off road’

He was heading north in wrong direction, Spanish cars drive on right which he may well not have been aware of, he walking on left side of road, car come straight at him, he dives for cover and ends up in terrain
 
Signi Zoekhonden team have posted an update on their facebook page in Dutch. This is a Google translate:

"Today, Jay's body was found in Tenerife by a Spanish search team.
Signi search dogs started searching early this morning to avoid the heat.
The start was at the last telephone signal.
The dogs picked up the track well and took turns. The first indications were hopeful. The conditions were tough.
During the afternoon the dogs took a break to continue their search later in the day.
Then the news came quickly that the Spanish rescue team had found a body lower in the area. Presumably Jay.
Signi search dogs wishes the family a lot of strength with this immense sadness..."

ETA: personally I'd translate it as "trace" and not track. Essentially, the dogs were on it.

If that happened Lucy must have either decided or been told to keep that secret from day 1 as we knew from her that he was off road when she spoke to him pretty much from the start which makes me think that didn't happen as I can't think of any reason not to have said that. In fact it would have been very helpful to the searchers

I agree with the simplest of speculation, for the most part. Young man, out of his element, likely not thinking clearly, dehydrated, with a sense of desperation, possible panic setting in, makes for a dangerous situation in already dangerous terrain.

I just can't shake the idea that he may have been running from something, trying to avoid a greater danger, that taking the risk of the elements, and the dangerous terrain, looked better to him than going back to the comfort of the blacktop road, the b&b, or....even the more rational decision, prior to departing that little hamlet there, await the next bus. Why couldn't he simply sit tight, and await the next bus?

Might have just thought he could hitch a lift and get back sooner if he set off walking, and then if no lift the 10:00 bus would come along that way and he could flag it down.

Without knowing the exact location where he was found, another possibility might be he tried to get down to Playa de Masca, where I think it was said on the previous thread there's a boat taxi.

Or he might just not have been thinking straight at all.

There are much simpler explanations for that than foul play, though. He was young, possibly still intoxicated from the night before, and unfamiliar with the terrain. As a British tourist on holiday, he simply underestimated "the risk of the elements," as much more educated people have before him.

If he was "running from something," it would have made more sense to take the bus, or tell one of his friends he was in trouble. He was reported to be in good spirits.

The simplest explanation really is usually the right one, and in this case I don't think there's much reason to assume the explanation is anything but misadventure. It's not an exciting story, but it's the likeliest.

It is possible he did tell his friends about being in trouble, if he was in trouble. It could be that the friends didn't find it necessary to mention it on national TV, which is understandable. And he couldn't take the bus, the bus wasn't coming for a while.
Anyways, not that it makes a difference, sadly. The outcome we already know.

She may have been asked to say that so they could continue without publicity or she may have been told by the family and had no reason to disbelieve it. Unless the family genuinely didn't know they were still looking you'd think they might have clarified that as they did with the baseless rumours about the phone being found

Exactly. I imagine there is all sorts of backstory that Jays friends have had to divulge to police. Things they’d probably not want their granny or employers to know about.

Just because WE haven’t heard about it, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

Just to clarify this, the quote in full context was:

“As you all know the Guardia Civil gave up the land search after 12 days. We have been actively working with search and rescue teams and we can now confirm that we have a team of experts flying in over the weekend from the Netherlands, who will carry on the search with their specialist dogs.

“We are only able to fund this with the generosity of all those who donated.”

Mum says Jay Slater’s disappearance ‘still mystery’ as team of experts to fly in
