Does the defense have to tell the prosecutor that it will be calling the defendant to the stand?

Not really. They just have to call the defendant. But the prosecutor is always prepared.

It's her first death penalty case and she doesn't want to be overturned so she's overcompensating by allowing in all kinds of crap that most judges would exclude. That's my best guess anyway.

All she wants is one juror to feel sorry for her. If one person on that jury ever used a spoon or belt on their child, this is dangerous for her as that is jodi telling them they are abusers to the level it makes a killer.

Totally right. Every juror has either been spanked by a parent they love or has spanked their own child, and much of that probably involved a spoon or a ruler or flyswatter or belt or "chancla". Every last one of them is going to be offended.
