I must admit I HATE the patriarchal system as a whole. But these cults that promote an extreme patriarchal system like this one really burn me up. I feel for the Duggar children, they have been brought up to be totally subservient and tolerant if they are girls. Their lives are lived in a narrow chasm, looking down on those who do not follow the bible. Without any disrespect meant, I have found some of the most hypocritical people in the world purport to live their lives following religious systems. When you have a system that is so patriarchal and misogynistic it is easy to hide abuse. You just need to look at the scandals that have hit the Jehovah's Witnesses. Josh Duggar cannot ever be condoned for what he did. It was and as abhorrent. He has shown he has no respect for his mother, father, sisters or his wife. However he's been brought up in a system where the man is king.

Any system that attempts to create a divide between people so that they are alienated from the wider world does not sit easy with me.

BBM - yes men, who cannot possibly control themselves when faced with temptation. That belief, in and of itself, should send a clear message as to who is the weaker sex. Yet, somehow, that message is missed over and over and over again by the believers.

Agreed. Women are ultimately the ones in these systems who end up being abused and hurt because the man is top of the pile. I feel for women like Anna (Is that his wife as that is who I mean) because she cannot divorce him even if she wanted to, but I think she'll stand by him as that is all she knows. These children and young adults have been taught that the man is boss, and anything they do makes the man look bad. It's so sad tbh

I think this might have been addressed earlier in the JD threads, but it just occurred to me, man, what must it be like to get married in that religion? Where sex is concerned you're expected to go from zero to 120 overnight. That must really be confusing, especially for the women.

I'd like to see more. She only linked the website -- she made no comment on it.
Having been raised in similar doctrine as the Duggars, I highly doubt she even knows what she believes about this situation..or what she is "allowed" to believe.

I don't know, I'm starting to think the whole thing is faked including everyone's 'purity' .. I wonder how many actual virgins actually walk down the aisle?

In most fundie religions there is shunning.

Is the post by Jessa the beginnings of a shunning because JD isn't towing the line so to speak? idk

Well, there are "Born Again Virgins" in some religions. Yuck, Sick, Gross, Nasty MOO

"Across the country, "revirginization" appears to be gaining steam. Spiritual efforts to reclaim virginity emerged back in the early 1990s and now, prompted by abstinence-only school courses taught to thousands of girls nationwide, and by religious teachers, there are reports of more and more young women like Watts attempting a sexual do-over. Other women are opting for a more radical route to reclaim their virginity: surgical replacement of the hymen, the small membrane that stretches from the walls of the vagina and that typically breaks when a woman first has intercourse — or for many other reasons, from tampon use to vigorous exercise."

That just reminded me of something.

I grew up in the Bible Belt and was instructed by my mom, who wasn't particularly religious herself but who was raised by a religious mom, to "save" myself for marriage.

I obediently adhered until I became old and mature enough to recognize that this rule wasn't going to work for me since I had a career to pursue and not a man I wanted to marry in sight.

My mom was initially shocked when she discerned that I had not obeyed her dictum, but she didn't dog me about it, either.

Years later this came up and I asked her if she and her sisters and her peer group were really brought up that way, to "save" themselves for marriage.

She replied wryly that yes, that was what they were all taught, but, and I quote, "I think I was the only one that fell for it."

God love her for her honesty. (I know I do.)

Surgical hymen replacement sounds like totally unnecessary medicalization of moral convictions at best and borders on the abusive at worst.

And it's not like God won't know whether you had sex before or not...

If it's necessary to convince your future husband that you're a virgin (so he won't beat you up and treat you like a *advertiser censored*), don't marry him. JMO.

Possibly, maybe he is actually missing and not at the rehab centre .. has anyone checked Vegas?

Today (Wednesday) at 10:00AM on LMN:

In God's Country (AKA The Ultimate Sin)

In God's Country is a modern day story of slavery. Young women ignored by the police and protected by "freedom of religion" are trapped in polygamous communities scattered throughout North America. Judith Joseph is one of them. Despite being raised under the watchful eyes of "God's Keepers" and knowing no other life, Judith realises she cannot watch her sixteen year old daughter succumb to the same fate she was born into. Desperate, with no other resources and no connections, Judith sets her house on fire and escapes with her five children. Alone, on the "outside", Judith is ill equipped to handle the challenges facing her, but she's determined to build a life. As she struggles to feed her family, Judith's daughter naively runs back to the community they've just escaped...

This made-for-TV movie is about a polygamous sect and has scenes that depict the men's control over their wives and even young girls who are treated like sexual possessions. Well-acted and worthwhile viewing. :moo:

Would love to be a fly on the wall at Amy's wedding this weekend.

I wonder who will show up???

YAY JESSA! (You're off the slap list.)

"Jessa Seewald Publicly Sides With Father-in-Law Who Called Josh Duggar a 'Pretender'"

http://www.etonline.com/news/171148...er_in_law_who_called_josh_duggar_a_pretender/

Seewald is a jackass for publicly forgiving Josh for molesting his daughter-in-law, but not for cheating on Anna.

I have absolutely no respect for Jessa, she too pubicly supported her brother during the molestation scandal but now that there is another scandal she all of a sudden poo-poo's her brother. Seems to me she was after the almighty money and fame and now that that isn't going to happen, she's pissed.

They had their fun fabulous trips and people adoring them. Now they are less than nothing. This is going to cause huge problems. They are desperately treading water and grasping onto anything to get their fancy life back. I don't think it is going to happen.

Are they capable of examing their life and forging their own selves? Not sure. Jessa planned on the life of stardom.
