The city of Birmingham held a candlelight vigil for Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney. The 3-year-old was abducted outside a birthday party on Oct. 12. Her body was found in a Center Point dumpster Tuesday evening.

Birmingham Police say they have found Kamille McKinney's remains - Alabama News
The Jefferson County Coroner confirmed the remains of a 3-year-old girl found in a Center Point dumpster as Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney. The cause of death is still pending.

'We will never forget her’: Birmingham mourns Kamille 'Cupcake’ McKinney
Nearly 24 hours after 3-year-old Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney was found dead in a dumpster, a crowd of hundreds gathered in agony and sorrow outside Birmingham City Hall to honor her life.

They stood in sadness, and solidarity, to mourn the girl whose disappearance gripped the Birmingham area for 10 days and whose death shook the city to its core.

"A little innocent 3-year-old girl was ripped from her family too soon and her absence, make no doubt about it, will leave a hole in our hearts,'' said Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin. “Kamille McKinney, affectionately known as Cupcake, we will never forget her name.”

The City Hall vigil was one of several in the Birmingham area on Wednesday, with more planned for the coming days.

Earlier in the day, Saint James AME Church, which is less than a mile from where Kamille was abducted, opened its doors at noon for prayer and healing. Tears flowed from the eyes of about 30 mourners.

A few Birmingham police officers left notes of encouragement for Kamille’s family. A white cross with a purple bow was left at the altar along with flowers.

Kamille McKinney's grandmother thanks community for support, neighbors worry about safety
LD is a mother of four. She said Tom Brown Village has not been the same since Kamille McKinney went missing 11 days ago.

Most children no longer play outside alone.

LD believes the trauma of what happened to Kamille will linger for some time.

"I have not slept all night. When they did the press conference last night my house was quiet. and all of a sudden my kids screamed, "she's gone." That just really took a toll on me," LD said.

I spoke with Kamille's grandmother who says her family is taking time to grieve privately.

She wants to thank everyone who spent days volunteering in the search for her granddaughter.

An autopsy performed Wednesday led to the positive identification as Kamille. She was pronounced dead at 5:16 p.m. at Santek Waste Services of Alabama on Barber Blvd., which is the old Mt. Olive landfill. Her cause of death has not been released.

Brown is the mother of three young girls. In July of 2018, she lost custody of her daughters and the children were placed with a family member.

Kamille McKinney's uncle opens up with message of anger & unity at vigil in Birmingham

One of Kamille's uncles, CM, opened up during a vigil for the little girl tonight in Birmingham.

McKinney said the family is fighting to deal with the fact she is gone and he's angry.

As community members gathered to mourn the life that was taken, Kamille's family sat quietly in the crowd at W.C. Patton Park.

CM said it's been an impossible past 11 days.

"I'm angry. Mad. Wanting to know why would somebody do this to a three year old. I'm still angry."
