Why would they be in such a rush? For that matter, why would they even want this to go to trial? Seems like a huge gamble - particularly when there have been confessions. Maybe they're attempting to push a plea bargain?
It doesn't make sense unless the defense is going to maintain that Hilt was there, but did not do anything to harm her ... and the other two are not telling the truth about what happened that night. Hilt's attorney may use the defense that the other two cut their deal (and lied) and put the blame on Hilt.
I hadn't thought of that (pushing the plea bargain), but maybe that's what the defense is doing. It could be that the DA hasn't offered Hilt the same deal as the others. If Hilt is the one that stabbed her, then that's probably what killed her. The others may get a lighter sentence for being there, but not killing her. I just don't know how that works here. I know that with some crimes, just being present, you'll end up with the same charges as the one who commits the crime.
I would imagine that Mattox and Calbeck don't want a LWOP sentence since according to them, Hilt actually killed her (if that's what's going on). I'll bet they have agreed to a sentence of some sort ... so many years and then the possibility of parole in exchange for testifying against Hilt. Hilt may be maintaining that one of the other ones stabbed her. I'm not sure how they'd prove who did what. They are all sleazebags and deserve to go to prison and if Hilt stabbed her, he should get a harsher sentence, IMO. Maybe the defense figures that if they go to trial, the jurors might not believe the testimony of the other two and they are willing to take their chances, which would take us back to your thoughts on pushing a plea bargain. Push the DA against the wall and tell him they'll take their chances with a jury. Then see if the DA folds and gives them what they want. I wonder how much input the family has on something like this?
