For those who are not familiar with the hard 50, the defendant has to serve 50 consecutive years until they can be paroled.

Dustin Hilt Must Serve At Least 68 Years In Prison,
Dustin Hilt
must serve at least 68 years in a Kansas prison before he is eligible for parole for his part in kidnapping and killing Keighley Alyea, authorities said Tuesday.

Hilt was sentenced to a "Hard 50" sentence for his first-degree murder conviction, the Johnson County District Attorney's Office said. In addition, he must serve almost 14 years for aggravated kidnapping and almost five years for aggravated robbery.

You know what REALLY sucks about this case.

She was in the trunk, alive. She did what she was supposed to, by disconnecting the tail lights. That is what you are supposed to do. Break those, try and get a hand outside the vehicle, anything to arouse suspicion.

But they HEARD her screaming for help.

I have to wonder what would have happened if she had not made any noise in the trunk. If she had then pretended to be dead when they opened the trunk.

Would they have checked for a pulse? Would they have stabbed her anyway?

Or would they have left her on the side of the road believing she was dead, when she was in fact alive enough to kick and scream for help?

This is one of those cases where we can learn something. If you have disabled the taillights and the car is pulled over for it... then kicking and screaming for help is the right thing to do. There is a law enforcement officer walking by the trunk of the car. But driving down the road, nobody outside the car is going to hear you screaming... and it will only aggravate those who put you in the trunk in the first place.

I hate the cases that have "what ifs" like this. Where even after the initial crime occurred, there was another possible opportunity for the person to be saved.

I am glad Dustin got 69 years. Very glad.
 
Merriam man pleads guilty in Keighley Alyea murder
A Merriam man pleaded guilty today for his role in the kidnapping and murder of an Overland Park teen.

Gerald Calbeck, 20, pleaded guilty to intentional second degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery related to the death of Keighley Ann Alyea, 18.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors reduced a first-degree murder charge faced by two co-defendants.

Jurors have convicted one of the other men, Dustin Hilt, 19, of Shawnee, of first degree murder, kidnapping and robbery and a judge sentenced him to 69 years.

The other defendant, Joseph Mattox, 23, of Overland Park, is scheduled for trial in April on first-degree murder and the other charges.

Calbeck will likely be a witness.
