Dana Chandler to represent herself in retrial
Dana L. Chandler, who was previously convicted of a 2002 double homicide, will represent herself in her retrial, for the time being.
The Kansas Supreme Court overturned Chandler’s murder convictions in April, citing prosecutorial misconduct, and remanded the case back to Shawnee County District Court. In 2012, she was convicted of killing her ex-husband, Michael Sisco, and his fiancee, Karen Harkness, and sentenced to 100 years in prison.
Shawnee County District Judge Nancy Parrish hasn’t recused herself from the second round of proceedings as Chandler, 58, has requested. Keen Umbehr, who with his wife, Eileen, has maintained Chandler’s innocence, will act as an informal legal adviser.
At her first appearance after the case was remanded to district court, Chandler requested that Parrish recuse herself and allow her to represent herself with standby counsel.
Parrish and Chandler met one-on-one for an hour during a motion hearing Thursday to discuss Chandler’s request for a change of judge.
