KS, Two 14-year-old girls arrested in murder of Joanne Johnson (93).

It makes me think the girls have been working on their story this past year.

It could, however, be very accurate that their victim was beaten to death with an axe.
I read this as the daughter explaining her DNA at the crime scene. Thinks she's smarter than the investigators. Sick. Brutal. JMO

The father of one of the girls who was arrested is speaking out. He doesn't believe his daughter was involved.

Ah, the old "ninjas made me watch" defense. (Jury gets case after hearing contrasting claims of how Mollie Tibbetts was killed)

Not buying that. I would imagine these detectives painstakingly got the evidence because they probably couldn't believe two young girls could kill and old woman with, presumably, an axe.

IMO MOO

Good point. They were very likely just 13 when they killed her. But why?

I hope they're tried as adults. Beating and killing the elderly is just beyond wrong and sick.

Did the girls harm animals? How do two such girls find one another? Or, was one a clear instigator and the other just a follower?

Can you imagine getting that knock on your door as a parent?

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says two 14-year-old female subjects from Augusta were arrested Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection to Johnson’s death.

The teens are being held in separate juvenile detention centers, and formal charges are pending.

The KBI says it is still an ongoing investigation.
93 years old and still living in her house that looks cute and maintained. Completely unfair her life ended like it did, within a home I bet she loved. The girls had zero respect for their elder or for life in general.

I don't buy their story that a man coerced them into the house while he murdered a woman in her 90s (why in the world would he do that - makes no sense), but even if that happened, the girls sat on this knowledge for months. Cruel.

Investigation Discovery has a series "Mean Girl Murders" -- girls like this duo are out there.

I trust at Trial we will see two wannabes-- restyled to look age 12, and who love singing in the church choir.

Dad would do good to advise his child to be the first to talk. Early bird gets the worm...

I'd be furious, if a local, reading the latest account by the father!

As if the Augusta, KS parks are full of lingering, white men who are waiting around to "coerce" 13-14 yr old girls to follow them to observe an axe murder.

You don't have to be a big town with big budgets to have big ideas. Motivated by a school bond issue that passed overwhelmingly 10 years ago, city leaders in Augusta, Kansas were inspired to create a better community for their residents. They launched the Pride and Progress Initiative which poured money into parks, splash pads, fields - amenities that allowed this community to find balance and harmony in the beautiful place they call home.

Augusta, KS population sits around 10,000-- where more than half of the residents own their own home.

Hoping time will be good to the KBI and local Police where they can still capture surveillance and GPS positioning of the teens from nearly 12 months ago.

I'd love nothing more than surveillance of the the defendants whereabouts -- including being seen alone in the park-- hatching their murderous plot, just between themselves. JMO

Johnson’s neighbors remember her as being a kind and independent lady. They say they miss her waving hello when they passed her home.

On Friday though, they’re just grateful justice is finally beginning to turn its wheels.

From the quoted MSN link:

A shocking new detail is that local parents say their kids at Augusta High School witnessed the 14-year-old girls being pulled out of class, arrested, and escorted off the property.

The school released a statement saying:

“Dear USD 402 families,

The district has been made aware of Augusta Public Safety Department's announcement regarding an ongoing investigation involving two Augusta minors who are part of a current law enforcement investigation. While the school district is not involved in this investigation, we will cooperate fully with law enforcement if the need arises.

News like this can be difficult, but I want to stress that the incident under investigation took place nearly one year ago, away from school. It did not take place on district property, and nobody from our school was placed in harm’s way at any time.

Because the law enforcement investigation is ongoing, the investigation involves minors, and it is not a district matter, it would be inappropriate for district staff to comment further.

If you have any concerns about how this news might affect your student, please contact your school for support. Thank you for your partnership as we work together to make our schools a safe, positive place for learning.”

Wow. I wonder why they decided to arrest the girls in school? Maybe because it would be more likely to be free of weapons?
