Two cousins accused in 2015 Highland Road double murder have trial delayed to June

At a court hearing in the case earlier this year, attorneys raised the possibility of using two juries — one for Alonso and the other for Garcia — to try them simultaneously in the same courtroom.

Dwight Doskey, who represents Alonso, said Tuesday a dual-jury setup is still a possibility. Doskey said he has not filed a motion to sever Alonso's case from Garcia's.

The trial, which had been set to start Nov. 27, was rescheduled to June 18.

One of the two men awaiting trial in the 2015 robbery, beating, kidnapping and killing of a Highland Road couple claims he can't get a fair trial in East Baton Rouge Parish and has asked a judge to move it to a different jurisdiction.

Frank Garcia, who has a court-appointed attorney, filed a motion on his own asking state District Judge Trudy White for a change of venue in the high-profile first-degree murder case.

Trial for second suspect in BR couple's slaying set for early 2022

The second suspect accused in the 2015 kidnapping and murder of a Baton Rouge couple will go to trial on Jan. 31.

A date for Ernesto Alonso's murder trial was established just over a week after the other suspect in the killings, Frank Garcia, took a plea deal. Garcia pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the murders of Dennis and Suzanne Duplantier.
