Whoa this was five years before I was born, but was Gardere ln completely different back then? I cant imagine letting my daughter live there.
I lived in BTR from birth (1957) until 1988 and was in the Gardere area for a few years around the disappearance. In the early/mid 1980s, the Gardere Lane area was very nice--much of it was still unbuilt, and the apartments and houses that were being built were a bit more upscale than the student-grade housing near it.

Side note re terminology: there's not really an area called "east Baton Rouge," or wasn't then at least. The city of Baton Rouge is in East Baton Rouge Parish. The Gardere area is in what would have been southern BTR; Goudchaux's old store was up in the north part of the city proper, neither was in the eastern part of the parish or the city. I think "East Baton Rouge" as used here probably means the parish, not a part of the city. FWIW.
