But how could she have been getting disability? She hadn’t been to a Physician since she was a teenager.

You don’t need to go to a doctor for things that are cut and dry. Autism, Autoimmune, Lymes, paraplegic, Bipolar (unsafe), Blindness and deafness, schizophrenia, brain injuries and many more.

Once you have been diagnosed and approved there is no reason to prove it over and over. You have your official and medical documentation. You have to go through a rigorous process to be approved for disability so a lot goes into the process. The documentation speaks for itself.

Permanent and temporary disability benefits have their own rules. If you claim permanent but you are well and running your own stealth business you can lose all of your benefits and pay a penalty.

If you are able to do a little work you are allowed to but you can’t exceed a certain amount. These are the logs that you need to report.

You don’t qualify for disability benefits as a teenager though… You would have to be 18 and have a lot of documentation and be examined by a Physician. Which Lacey wasn’t.
The diagnoses you mention do not preclude you from not working. It would be situational.
I understand what you’re saying but Lacey was not on disability from everything we’ve heard.

I agree.
Well, where I live a person must jump through maaaany medical loopholes to get such disability payment.
And have a thick portfolio of numerous specialists' opinions.

Yes definitely situational, there are varying degrees. I didn’t know about teenage qualifications. My neighbor has twins, both are cognitively challenged but one was able to be enrolled in special ed, the other is not.

They are 24 now but they have differences in quality of life. It’s sad but they are very close.

We don’t know about Lacey but it would be surprising if she wasn’t formally diagnosed with a disability. She was kept out of school for a partial period.

I don’t think there has been any confirmation of any diagnosis, let alone a diagnosis that would qualify for disability benefits. Unless I missed something, her last interaction with a mandated reporter related to potential social anxiety. I’ve seen nothing about an official diagnosis of autism, a neurological condition, etc.

If she was non verbal she would have definitely been diagnosed and disabled.

“According to authorities, Lacey had been diagnosed with autism and was non-verbal, WBRZ reported”

The parents have said their daughter was “of sound mind” and claimed they brought her meals and a portable toilet but she was afraid to leave the couch, The Advocate reported.

“Authorities said Lacey was diagnosed with social anxiety and had a history of severe Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism spectrum disorder which leaves people with maladjusted social skills.

She also reportedly suffered from locked-in syndrome, a rare neurological disorder characterized by complete paralysis of voluntary muscles, except for the eyes”.

She definitely didn’t have locked in syndrome in a lot of the pictures of her seen in the media.

This case is absolutely horrifying and I’m shocked that anything like this could happen in a so called first world country. There is not a single reason that could excuse what they have done to their daughter.

Re "Collecting her disability"

Wow
I never even thought about it!

Is it possible?
Without any medic checking on disabled person?
You know, filling in some tables in medical forms with info?
I thought inspections are necessary to get such money for carers/disabled person.

Yes, agreed. Collecting Lacey's disability and using her to claim as an annual (federal) tax dependent. moo :(

Agreed, it’s unreal that this happened in the US.

Her parents say she was “of sound mind” but in the same sentence they say that “she was afraid to leave the sofa so they brought her a portable toilet”. Nonsensical.

To be afraid of getting off the sofa is a major issue that needed to be mentally addressed and resolved accordingly. In her case she was eligible for home health care, speech and physical therapy etc so why wasn’t that happening?? I’m surprised they made that claim because it’s a dumb excuse and easily disputable.

Is anyone here a mandated reporter?
From what I understand, neglect/abuse of children (and especially disabled children) is very common?

We are still living with people who thought being a good parent meant providing food and shelter up until 18 years.
We are still living with people who kick their children out of their homes for being gay.
Heck, people earlier in this thread tried to excuse Lacey's parents, because they were simply "neglectful" and not "abusive".
We still have a long way to go in caring for our children.

Help for Lacey wasn't happening because her parents chose to not get her help. They obviously didn't believe Lacey deserved it. And they purposely hid how she existed from others.
They chose it for her, intentionally.
I believe they wanted to punish Lacey with their choices.

I just don’t think they were there in the house, at least in the final stages of Lacey’s life, but I feel like we would know about any alternative properties from records and witness accounts.
In thread #1 I shared that I looked at publicly available property records online and the parents only show up for the house where Lacey was. I'm not an expert on how property works but I don't think they would show up on tax records if they were simply renting a place. So them only showing up for one house doesn't mean they were staying there.
She was eating the sofa from starvation.
I would consider eating as a sign of a will to live,
“According to authorities, Lacey had been diagnosed with autism and was non-verbal, WBRZ reported”
I thought that former friends of Lacey made statements implying she would speak and could be outgoing? Also the neighbor that said he assumed she got married (a possible reason why he hadn't seen her). If she was nonverbal would the neighbor not have known about it? He was close enough to them he asked the parents if that was true.

If Lacey really got this "disability money",
then it was her fund to pay for care -
like a carer who comes to help with hygiene and prepare nutritional food -
even for 2 hours a day.

I'm not sure what sum it is and what is the cost of facility appropriate for her,
but surely it would be enough to pay a woman acting as a carer for coming for 2 hrs a day.

And why wasn't she put in a bed?
There are special medical beds for people who cannot move.
There are diapers for adults.
There are also special medical mattresses to prevent bed sores.

It is from my country's site and these beds are for kids, but there are beds for adults.

Has there been anything about what caused her to deteriorate once she left school? I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that she was subjected to one or more types of abuse that caused a brain injury, psychiatric injury, or both.

My guess is...
- lack of peer contact
- lack of school regime/ ordered way of organising a day.

What are you referencing in my comment about eating the sofa? I didn’t mention anything about her will to live.

You can live next to the same neighbor for decades and not know things that are being done behind the scenes no matter the socioeconomic differences. It could be a school principal, doctor, senator, music teacher, priest, ceo, artist or realtor. There are no vocations that are immune to nefarious activities.

We see it everyday here on the forum and all AP news sources & platforms. ‘He was such a nice guy and he went to work everyday’. That means nothing! ‘Rex’ the architect and family man who had his own business in NYC is just one example of the many.

It would be great if we could see an areal view of houses within a 5 mile radius labeled secret ‘sex abuser, embezzler, rapist, bully, drug trafficker, etc’. It’s a tough reality to face that things go on that we may never know about.

The root and motive would have needed to be investigated. I just hope that they have to face the toughest consequences available for sentencing. Evil.

“They chose it for her”

Yes! And what makes this even harder to understand is the amount of time that she was abused. It’s disgusting that she was basically tortured.

If they didn’t want to be bothered there are choices that are available so we know that this was about selfish and dark motives.
