OT--MaHouston, thank you for sharing your story, amazing. Your strength shines through each word. Blessings to your loving spirit.

OT--MaHouston, thank you for sharing your story, amazing. Your strength shines through each word. Blessings to your loving spirit.

Thank you, I will take all the blessings I can get! I don't rule anything out of any scenario because of it. I talked to the hospital, doctors, psychologists. Even I didn't believe it was amnesia at first. I thought, yeah, right. I would say that too. But, it really was and it was so very hard for him to cope with not remembering things and places that had meant so much to him before he was obviously hit or fell? I will never know what exactly happened. :heartbeat:

I apologize in advance for the very long post. I have taken a couple of days and went through the video's, articles and press conference's and put together the following document. It looks much better in Word format!

It is a work in progress and if anyone feels it is useful then I will continue to add facts as I come across them. Apologize if it is useless.

There are no personal opinions here...completely unbiased....only facts found through research. I plan to elaborate on the bike being found in more detail as well as add the map and some of the original pics but too tired tonight.

If you see it here then the statement can be found within the links posted at the end. The CNN video's at the end show some of the surveillance pics in much better clarity.

JUST THE FACTS

MISSING: MICKEY SHUNICK (5/22/90)

When: May 19th, 2012, approximately 2:00am
Where: Lafayette, LA – Saint Streets Area
Reported Missing: May 19th, 2012 – Approx. 6:00pm
Reward: Reward has been capped at $25,000

Mickey is 5’ 1”, approximately 115 lbs. She has shoulder length light blond curly hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a bright pastel, multi-colored shirt, grey acid washed skinny jeans and silver ankle boots. She has a small tattoo of a bicycle on her right outer ankle and a nose ring on her left nostril. She was last seen riding a black and gold Schwinn Cutter bicycle with glittery gold hand grips. She was carrying a small pink container of pepper spray in her front pocket. She was also carrying a light brown leather backpack/purse, a yellow Vera Bradley wallet and a black Verizon slider cell phone.

Mickey was heading towards her home on Governor Miro Drive which is 4 miles from her last known location, friend, Brettly Wilson’s home. She never arrived. Her family reported her to local law enforcement as a missing person at approximately 6:00pm, Saturday, May 19th.

Local Lafayette law enforcement, FBI, Homeland Security and the US Marshal’s service have been involved in the investigation.

This is what we know:

Mickey rode her bicycle to meet nine friends for a concert at Artmosphere Hookah Lounge and Bar on Johnson Street the evening of Friday,May 18th. At 10:15pm Mickey suggested going to Mel’s Diner but her friends didn’t want to leave. At 12:45am Mickey and Brettly left Artmosphere and bicycled to Brettly’s home on Ryan Street. Brettly then drove Mickey through the Taco Bell drive-thru and returned back to Brettly’s home to eat.

At 1:30am Mickey’s friend Ashley called Mickey on her cell. This is reportedly the last time her cell was used. Mickey left Brettly’s house at 1:45am. His last sighting of her was that of Mickey closing the door behind her as she left his home. (**There was an article in the Advertiser that reported Brettly last saw her in his driveway but I don’t see where that can be confirmed by him.)

Surveillance cameras show Mickey on Verseilles Blvd. heading towards St. John Street at 1:47am. Police believe she then traveled onto St. John Street and crossed over University Avenue, continuing West on St. Landry Street.

She was spotted again on St. Landry Street (Circle K) at 1:48am. A pickup truck identified as a white Chevy Z71 was seen in the same spot on St. Landry Street at 1:49am. This is the last confirmed and reported sighting of Mickey.

At 1:51am a white four door pickup truck was seen traveling in the opposite direction of Mickey on St. Landry Street in front of the Circle K. It is unclear if this is the same truck cameras caught at 1:49 on St. Landry Street or another vehicle of possible interest.

Vehicles of Interest:

In initial police statements it was stated as:

In both videos, a white, four door pickup truck is captured on video after Mickey traveled those streets. The surveillance video comes from Lafayette Consolidated Government and is taken in front of the Circle K on St. Landry.

Police said it took a long time to go through all the surveillance video collected, and much of it had to be watched in real time. Police said they saw the footage Thursday and then had to get it enhanced in order to positively identify Mickey.

Images of missing Louisiana student Mickey Shunick caught on surveillance tape the night of her disappearance have prompted police to wonder whether three vehicles seen in the tape might be involved.

Via Nancy Grace Blog:
Mouton told HLN the vehicles of interest include:
• A white, four-door truck that was travelling in the same direction
• A white, four-door Chevrolet Z71, also headed in the same direction
• A 80’s or 90’s GM model vehicle with rear right body work, travelling in the same direction
• A white truck with a bed cover that was travelling in the opposite direction about three minutes after Mickey passed through the area

Authorities have not determined whether two of those images show the same vehicle.

The current vehicle of interest is a newer model white Chevy Z71, 4 door pickup truck seen on St. Landry Street heading in the same direction of Mickey. It is unclear if the white four door pickup truck seen going in the opposite direction of Mickey is the same vehicle and/or is still a vehicle of interest.

Video surveillance captured images of an 80’s-90’s Oldsmobile with bondo on the passenger side rear quarter panel and a white GMC or Chevy pickup truck with a bed cover on University after Mickey traveled on these streets. Both have been identified by police and cleared.

Bicycle Found:

On May 27th Lafayette Police are confirming that Mickey Shunick’s bike has been found beneath the Whiskey Bay I-10 Bridge at Exit #127, 27 miles from her estimated area of disappearance. Some local fisherman located the bike and notified police through the tips line. The entire area and the river are being searched for clues and evidence.

Fishermen found the black Schwinn bicycle on Sunday in the Atchafalaya River, near the bank under a highway interchange in a swampy area of Iberville Parish, La. Cpl. Paul Mouton said only a bit of the frame was out of the water when the men discovered it. Police also gathered other "items of interest" at the location where the bike was found, but did not elaborate, KATC.com reported.

Speaking at a press briefing, though, Corporal Paul Mouton was quick to point out that such assumptions are premature:

“The one thing that we don’t want to jump to conclusions and the thing we didn’t want to release the damage to the bike initially is because the first initial assumption would be that it was struck by a vehicle. We do not know that for a hundred percent that that’s where that damage came from.”

Mouton said that the tire, which had a bent rim with the tire “dislodged from the rim itself”, was the only visible damage to the bike.

“Our belief currently is that the bike was dumped beneath the bridge and was not thrown from the bridge,” Mouton said.

In regards to carnival workers via Jane Velez-Mitchell:

JON LEIBERMAN, INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER: Well, police are very concerned that the fact -- the fact is that this area is very close to I-10 which as you know is a main thoroughfare that runs all the way out to California. That`s one thing.

The second thing is look, police know this young lady did not just vanish. So they are right now, they`re back canvassing at that bar. They`re at red light camera video. They`re gathering all the surveillance video that they can and they are essentially also looking at employment records from the people who were supposed to work at that carnival, the Cajun Heartland State Fair.

We understand police are looking at the employment records and any criminal history of anybody associated with that event, just as one more avenue that they`re exploring to help find this young lady.

Tasha Patterson’s detailed account of her run-in with the white GMC via Nancy Grace:

Joining me right now is another special guest. This is Joy Patterson. Her daughter was approached by this white male in a white vehicle very similar to that vehicle seen in the Mickey surveillance video.

Ms. Patterson, thank you for being with us. What does your daughter say happened?

JOY PATTERSON, DAUGHTER RODE IN SUSPECT VEHICLE (via telephone): Well, my daughter was going home from a doctor`s appointment at 2:00 o`clock in the afternoon on South College Drive (ph), and the man gave her a ride to Walgreen`s six blocks -- about six blocks down the street.

And during the ride, the man -- she told the man that she was looking for work (INAUDIBLE) When she`s about to exit the vehicle, he tells her (INAUDIBLE) having sex with him for $80. During the course of the ride, he also told her that he likes to go driving around Lafayette, looking for pretty young girls to pick up.

PATTERSON: It was a white GMC Sierra 2500 series, Texas (ph) edition (ph). It was a white truck with a black cover on the bed. And she said that this man appeared to be in his 50s or 60s.

GRACE: Did the vehicle have tinted windows, or does she recall, Ms. Patterson?

PATTERSON: Yes, it had tinted windows.

GRACE: Did?

PATTERSON: Yes, ma`am.

GRACE: OK. Could you give me your best description of the male?

PATTERSON: Like I said, he was an older male in his 50s or 60s. He did happen to mention that he was retired.

GRACE: Did he have any facial hair?

PATTERSON: Did he have any facial hair? No, no facial hair. Gray hair and balding --

GRACE: And I believe he was heavyset?

PATTERSON: Yes. And he said he was retired.

GRACE: Was there anything else about the vehicle that she could remember? For instance, was there a gun rack? Was there a decal on it? Was it a -- did it have a back seat cab where somebody could also sit in the back?

PATTERSON: No, no. He did not have a gun rack. There`s nothing else, no details or anything else that she could remember about the vehicle. But there was a lot of chrome, she said, a lot of chrome on the vehicle.

GRACE: Was it a four-door truck?

PATTERSON: Yes, it was a four-door vehicle, an extended cab.

GRACE: Did she get a license plate?

PATTERSON: No, she did not. And I know that because --

(CROSSTALK)

PATTERSON: I`m sorry, that was my grandson. I know that because when it happened, she called me immediately after it happened, and I asked her about a license plate number and she did not get his license plate. She was very shooken up when it happened.

Saving this Island~ excellent work :)
The driveway comment was made by Brettly in the video you can't hear him talk very well with all the background noise.

Thank you, I will take all the blessings I can get! I don't rule anything out of any scenario because of it. I talked to the hospital, doctors, psychologists. Even I didn't believe it was amnesia at first. I thought, yeah, right. I would say that too. I will never know what exactly happened. :heartbeat:

OMG, what a bizarre and sad story, Mahouston. I'm so sorry that he wasn't able to cope with what happened to him. :( Did he have even an inkling of what happened or was it just blank?

*Does whiskey bay connect to the gulf of Mexico? Is it possible that Mickey could have been brought out of the country? I not by vehicle then by boat? I just want to ask that.......I've had a lot of time to dot here and think and been wanting to say this or that but couldn't....and mostly I've sat and wondered how I was put on timeout and have had to sort through absolute garbage about who's more southern than who. Black magic. Gravy. And a whole bunch of posts a whole lot more controversial than anything I've ever posted here.Sometimes I sit here and say.** .....ER ......MEH..... GURRRRD.....My post was pertaining to human behavior and coping mechanisms. Why everyone was welcome to search and investigate at one time every Tom dick and Harry and their brother and something changed that changed the "rules" all of a sudden. Not addressing issue of pi's but speculating or asking about the sudden change in circumstance being the causative factor in the sudden need for privacy....WHAT CAUSED THE SUDDEN CHANGE???..like ransom note or call, or knowing more about what happened to Mickey than we do for example *IF IF IF IF IF* * her route changed *because she was picking up weed/crack/Meth/cocaine/meeting a boyfriend/being a Hooker or anything else a person was ever not supposed to do YOU WILL NEVER EVER EVER HEAR THAT CONFIRMED BY LE NOR THE FAMILY simply because it victimizes the victim or blames the victim or taints her image to the point that people might be less apt to be do passionate about the whole thing...but I will say that nobody is perfect. And families do have secrets that they don't want the world to know and are choosy as to who they air their dirty laundry out to......duh!*Nobody is absolutely one hundred percent honest and forthcoming .....at all....ever.So trying to analyze them is a waste of time. *SO ....I really feel we are left with 2 options as to what we are to believe about people in general...1.as long as people are alive they are flawed and make mistakes their whole lives they have something to hide....-and/or-2.they are no longer living and are perfect because they were made perfect in heaven.*My opinion only but the only way I could see MYSELF insisting that someone is perfect is if they were no longer with us. That's just ME though.....And I could go through all the trouble of getting verified as a local or possible inside info yadda yadda but if anybody at ws wants my real name they can work for it and find it out.....in other words I ain't giving my name to anyone! That kind of thing (as in Facebook) gets pretty girls into trouble .....not saying fb got Mickey into trouble....I'm saying there was a user here on websleuths in the last thread posting pictures of a white truck.....if perp is reading and says to himself "uhhh self, I do believe that is my truck" and beings he/she/they/it know where their truck has been and can possibly pinpoint where the video that the pics were captured out of from lighting or surrounding details like background or etc....I dunno I haven't seen the pictures....I was not able ;) anyway, IMO, that's not at all safe!*And I sat here reading person after person post the video post the video.....I can see why she wouldn't want to but how would you feel if she did post it and then disappeared?? Or if owner of that truck if innocent gets jumped and beaten.....And then everybody jumped her sh** like she was being messy. For safety's sake.....I really think that a moderator should remove those pictures.....Aci, who feeds you? Or in other words are you married? I would think watching people cheat on each other and lie and everything else you see, would cause you to lose your faith in people a little.... whole lot! And this recent BS.... just don't quit doing what you do. You're smart and apparently have a good heart and that's two qualities you don't find together in the same person often. As for as the accusations of a "personal agenda" or anything of that sort....I have a young son.(6) he said "momma IIIIII wana be the one to find Mickey shunick." (With tears in his eyes) so I uhhhh...postponed....the uh....usual southern style of discipline and said "why?" (Was kinda scared of the answer) he says "BECAUSE THAT IS SOMETHING I COULD BE PROUD OF FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE" ......so I understand it ain't about reputation or reward money....he's that way because his momma made him that way. What is wrong with a persons upbringing if they think of personal gain in any terms other than in what about oneself that they can take pride in?Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note™, an AT&T LTE smartphone

And I've also read and gathered that I am not the only one who feels like maybe they don't want Mickey's case discussed on ws.......or spoken about by anyone except for the people they handpicked and allow to say what they want them to. Even have become angry with msm.

Difference between fb and ws is that they can control what is said on fb........several posts have been posted in haste then removed.......and I saw that it wad discouraged that anyone else make a page to 'spread the word" or Mickey's picture.......

And so I wonder what has changed........and if a certain someone was 'endangering' Mickey....then are we?

If she is being "held captive" and someone on ws cracks the case (by some miracle because of the lack of info) will she be put in danger.

I know rumors aren't loved or even tolerated but IMO the rumors are a whole lot less harmful to the investigation than the truth.........or even any part of the truth that might tip off a perp that they are closer to finding him/her/it/them.

Moooooooooooooo

OMG, what a bizarre and sad story, Mahouston. I'm so sorry that he wasn't able to cope with what happened to him. :( Did he have even an inkling of what happened or was it just blank?

He didn't sleep very well, always trying to remember or stew over something somebody said that he should know and didn't anymore. Over the course of the next six years a few different times he would stop in the middle of a tv show.. and say "hey, I remember......" but no, his memory never came flooding back. A lot of stuff before he went missing was gone. The psychologist hypnotist person said under hypnosis that he said he felt hit from behind with a board (like a 2x4) and robbed by the bank. He did cash his check that day after work, according to the bank. But, He didn't even remember going to work that day. He knew I was his wife, doesn't remember details of the day we got married. He knew his family but forgot how to get to their house. That's just how it went. It was rough..I remember not knowing where he was, was the most horrible feeling ever. I searched ditches, rivers, by myself..the entire three months. I thought he was dead then. I knew if he was alive, he would be home for the holidays..he loved them. His mother thought he just took off and made a new family and would come home when he felt like it. People react so differently..

I would just like to add that as frustrated as some of you are about this situation there are those of us that are equally frustrated and more inclined to share the family's view.

I am extremely empathetic and I often times end up taking on other people's pain. Outwardly I may not always show it but inwardly it tears me up and I pay a price for the toll it has on me. As a local I sought to help as I could as soon as I heard Mickey was missing. I knew how horrible and how
much angst I would feel if this were my sibling or child. Living near campus in an area where people routinely walk, ride bikes and felt safe this situation has greatly increased my anxiety level. I think day and night about Mickey and speak of her often, so much so that a friend recently asked what my obsession was with her. While to the Shunicks, this is 'their Mickey' , by encouraging and asking the community to become involved in searches, flyering, etc. she has become 'our Mickey.' I want to see 'our Mickey' come home alive just as her family does. I find it very frustrating that we are not hearing anything from the PO or law enforcement. I am perplexed by this whole situation with pushing ACI away. While I can understand that they are concerned for Mickeys safety, what about the safety of all
the other women in the area? Because they are the parents of Mickey, does that give them the right to take away ACI's First Ammendment rights? Or his right to examine and search for clues just like anyone as long as they are not impeding LE? LE should be the ones requesting the public not assist if they feel anyone is interfering with their investigation.
The Shunicks said ACI may cause harm to Mickey by his investigating (this is an unknown). If by his NOT investigating another young woman is abducted, can we then proclaim another unknown- that it is their fault? (Sounds as ludicrous to me as telling ACI he can't write about the case). Mickey may be their child but this is also about the safety of our community and I really don't care who looks for the person(s) who have mDe it feel unsafe.

Sunday, I was returning home from Breaux Bridge and utilized the Old Breaux Bridge Highway. This is not a usual route for me, but I was going to my moms before home. Anyway, sitting at the stop sign at Lake Martin Road was a DWT, he turned two cars ahead of me, and I tried to follow, but had small children with me. I tried to get a pic too, but that didn't work out to well :( That area would be a very good area to search!

Lake Martin was searched the first week by volunteers.

I think the new bike path near the Coliseum to the cajundome cost $1.2 million and Manu people were not happy about it.

Here's future bike plans for the city.

http://mpo.lafayettela.gov/plans/2035BikewayPlan/Amendment_1/text/Amendment_1.pdf

Right! This is the take away from this situation. No matter how this ends, the end result should be that Mickey and other riders are not safe.

If nothing else, this should be utilized to insure it never happens again. Make safety a priority in every community. Make bike paths that are well lit and far enough away from traffic that riders are safe. Make bike paths continue the entire length of the street, do not cut them off half way down or make them less wide.

If you are not a rider, you might be like my sister and say "such and such street" has a great bike path. I go home, look at it and think it's scary and narrow I'd still be riding at a mad sprint.

If anything, I think no matter what Mickey Shunick should have a foundation much like Susan B Komen.

That's all.. until we can start it, I wait for her safe return.

Just wondering does anyone know if mickey was known for not riding on the side walk next to the road for walkers/bikers I'm only asking because awhile back me an my boyfriend went ride arounwhose area she was last seen an he kept asking I wonder why she was on the the road when there's a side walk right there that goes all the way down this road

I'm assuming law enforcement would still be interested in finding the white truck.

I wonder if they checked for vehicles parked in long term parking at any nearby airports. Or any other parking lots where a vehicle might go unnoticed for a long time.

Maybe that's just fictional thinking since I see criminals do that in a lot of thriller novels, but maybe the person that did something to Mickey likes to read fiction too.

Hey JWhite,
Welcome to WS!

Can you tell us if posters for Mickey are up and down the bayou?

Wondering if we need to do more to get posters down south.

I have seen a few posters in gas stations, and I think I remember seeing a digital billboard, but no where near as much as we should have around this area. I have seen the fb posts shared alot among friends.

It is illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in Lafayette. The sidewalk is intended for those on foot.

Also, many sleuthers who are experienced cyclists have stated that sidewalk riding is often more dangerous than road riding. I'm not an experienced cyclist so I'll let those that are discuss this if they see fit.
