– Grand jurors heard more testimony Friday in Bedford in the decades-old case of two missing girls from Maryland.

Sheila Lyon, 12, and Katherine Lyon, 10, disappeared from a Wheaton, MD shopping plaza in March 1975. In September cold case investigators from Montgomery Co., MD searched Taylor's Mountain in Thaxton, where they believe the girls could be buried.

Capt. Darren Francke, with the Montgomery Co., MD Department of Police, said leads have come in since a news conference held in Bedford Co. on October 2. Francke said new information has come from people in both Bedford Co. and in Maryland. Investigators from Francke's department were in the area this week, working with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office and Commonwealth's Attorney and Virginia State Police. Francke said they are still interested in Taylor's Mountain, though he could not say if and when there will be another mountain search.

Bedford Co. Man Issued First Missing Alert When Lyon Sisters Disappeared

Bedford Co., VA - The investigation surrounding the disappearance of two sisters from Maryland has come full circle for a Bedford County man.

Jeff Pauley worked as a police dispatcher in Montgomery Co., MD in the 1970s. Pauley put out the first teletype to alert other law enforcement agencies that the Lyon sisters were missing.

Katherine Lyon, 10, and Sheila Lyon, 12, were last seen at a shopping plaza in Wheaton, MD in 1975. Investigators believe they could be buried on Taylor's Mountain in Thaxton.

Pauley moved to Bedford Co. about nine years ago. He is the county's deputy fire marshal. Pauley said he hadn't thought much about the case until earlier this year.

"I got a phone call at home here in Bedford County from a cold case investigator in Montgomery County,” said Pauley. “She was calling because she had learned that I had lived a couple of years after this event in an area of Gaithersburg where their person of interest possibly could have lived."

Pauley said the investigator emailed him a picture of the man, but he did not recognize him. Pauley said he believes it's the same picture police released to the media. Lloyd Welch, Jr. and Richard "Dick" Welch have been named persons of interest.

Pauley recently met the cold case investigator who called him about that picture. They ran into each other in Bedford County at the sheriff's office. The investigator was there as part of the investigation.

Pauley is 10-12 years older than the Lyon sisters, but grew up in the same neighborhood in Kensington, MD. He attended the same elementary school and remembers walking the same path through the woods to the plaza.

News reported today that police are looking for anyone who may have an old station wagon on their property, in relation to the Lyon sisters.

Police Seeking Station Wagon in 40-Year-Old Disappearance of Lyon Sisters
Friday, Nov 21, 2014 • Updated at 11:37 AM EST from nbcwashington.com

Could a station wagon -- 1960s or 1970s vintage, and possibly hidden in a barn or outbuilding in Bedford County, Virginia -- hold clues to the disappearance of two young girls almost 40 years ago?

Cold case investigators have been investigating new clues in the case of Shelia and Katherine Lyon, who disappeared March 25, 1975, after visiting a Wheaton, Maryland shopping center.
This year, the search turned to a property in Bedford County, Virginia, which was once owned by the family of 57-year-old Lloyd Lee Welch Jr., also known as Michael Welch. He was named a person of interest in February.

His uncle Richard Allen Welch Sr. of Hyattsville, Maryland, was named a person of interest in October.
Friday, the Bedford County Sheriff's Office said they are asking the public's help in identifying a late 1960s or early 1970s vintage station wagon that is now "associated with the crime."

No further description of the station wagon was given, but the sheriff's office said it "may have been hidden in, or removed from, a barn, shed or outbuilding." People with any information should call 540-586-7827.

Thursday December 4 UPDATE: Police say they are "zeroing in" on what happened to the Lyon sisters nearly 40 years ago.

GAITHERSBURG -- Nearly 40 years after their disappearance from the Wheaton Plaza shopping center, Montgomery County Police say they are getting closer to solving the case of the missing Lyon sisters - Sheila, 12, and Katherine, 10.

"We are zeroing in on the people that were responsible, and putting together the pieces of what exactly happened to the girls," Montgomery County Police Detective Mark Janney told WMAL.

It's been two weeks since WMAL reinstated its $7,000 reward for information leading to a resolution of the case. The girl's father, John Lyon, was an on-air personality at WMAL at the time of his daughters' disappearance, and during the initial search for the sisters, the radio station offered the reward.

As the investigation has warmed up in recent months, Montgomery County Police asked WMAL if it would cover that reward now. After several changes in ownership since 1975, the station's current owner, Cumulus Media, agreed to honor that commitment.

I just got google alerts for two new articles.

"A special grand jury in Bedford County assigned to investigate the Lyon sisters case will meet for the third time Friday.

Jurors will be presented with evidence from several unrelated cases during Friday's session, but will begin inquiries related to the Lyon sisters around 12:30 p.m. Investigators with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office confirm that Friday's session will be a long one that could last well into the evening."

Patricia Welch, 65, accused of lying to grand jury in Lyon sisters case

A 65-year-old Maryland woman has been charged with lying to a grand jury that is investigating the long-ago disappearance of Sheila and Katherine Lyon — part of investigators’ increased efforts to learn what happened 39 years ago after the sisters walked to a Wheaton shopping mall.

The woman charged late Friday, Patricia Jean Welch, is the wife of Richard Allen Welch, 69, whom police earlier labeled a “Person of Interest” in the case. Patricia and Richard Welch live on a small street in Hyattsville. Richard Welch is the uncle of Lloyd Lee Welch, 57, another “Person of Interest” in the case, according to police. Lloyd Welch, who was believed to be in Wheaton Plaza mall the day the Lyon sisters – 10- and 12-years-old – went missing, is incarcerated in Delaware for sex offenses he later committed.

Neither Richard Welch nor Lloyd Welch has been charged in the Lyon sisters’ case. Authorities have declined to comment on what role they think either might have had in the disappearance or detail what evidence they have gathered. But they have indicated that members of the Welch family have information that could help detectives.

Officials ask anyone with information about the case to call Montgomery investigators at 240-773-5070 or Bedford investigators at 540-586-7827.

First Release of the Long Haired Man (LHM) Sketch and Story

Below is a press release from MCP as printed in the Washington Post Newspaper and NBC News. This took place almost a full year ago. As you can see, no mention was made at the time of the Lyon Sisters disappearance, Lloyd or Richard Welch.

Although the sketch was made on 27 March 1975 (39 years earlier, not 30 years ago as stated in the article) by PFC Davis Morton, of MCP, it was not released at the time. A day later, on 28 March 1975, he drew the sketch of the Tape Recorder Man which was released on 1 April 1975 and became so much associated with the Lyon sisters story.

Contrary to the article, this was the initial release of the LHM sketch rather than a "re-release". Three months later at a February 2014 press conference, the LHM sketch was "re-released" along with a side-by-side comparison of a 1977 mugshot photo of Lloyd Lee Welch, Jr. and the naming of him as a Person of Interest in the Lyon Case. February 2014 marked the first time that the LHM sketch was publicly associated with the Lyon Sisters' case.

23 November 2013

Police in Montgomery County have released a sketch of a man sought in sex assaults during the mid-1970s, hoping the image will jog someone's memory of events four decades ago.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Cold Case Unit re-released the composite drawing Friday. The man shown is suspected in sexual assaults in Wheaton, Silver Spring and Takoma Park.

Detectives in the 1970s had spoken to a witness who described the man seen near an incident in Wheaton. The composite was created 30 years ago.

Detectives believe that there may be additional victims and say they hope any victims come forward. The man was described (in the mid-1970s) as a white male, in his late teens or early-20s, 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighing about 140 pounds. He had acne scars on the left side of his face.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the subject is asked to contact the Cold Case Unit at 240-773-5070.
