Trial to begin for teen charged in teacher’s rape, killing

Jury selection is set to begin this week in the trial of a teenager accused of raping and killing his math teacher in 2013. Philip Chism was 14 when he was charged in the death of 24-year-old Colleen Ritzer, a teacher at Danvers High School. He will be tried as an adult.

I haven't found a live stream but there is a reporter at the courthouse tweeting so there will be updated. There might be a livestream when the jury is seated and the actual trial begins. I'll keep looking.

Defense wants to bar photos of Chism during trial

Accused killer Philip Chism's attorney is asking a judge to bar members of the press from photographing the teen during his trial. Defense lawyer Denise Regan made that request on Wednesday morning, shortly before a pool of potential jurors were led into the courtroom for the start of jury selection in Chism's trial.

Though Chism has been photographed regularly during his pretrial court appearances, Regan now points to a section of the state Trial Court rule on cameras in the courtroom, which reads "Minors and sexual assault victims may not be photographed without the consent of the judge."

Chism, now 16, is still legally considered a minor, though he is being tried as an adult

My understanding is the court and attorneys reviewed the questionnaires and eliminated 13 jurors based on the answers. This morning the jurors are being voie dired individually and the judge is determining if they should be released. Jurors are being eliminated for hardship, illness, knowing about Chism's confession (ruled inadmissible). Once 18 jurors pass this round the attorneys will go through their peremptory challenges. Then the whole process starts again to fill the remaining slots until the 12 jurors and alternates are selected. I haven't heard how many alternates the judge wants. Seems like quite a process. No wonder they plan juror selection to continue till the end of next week.
