''Madeleine McCann police give update as they end search of Portugal reservoir

Police have said materials unearthed during a three-day hunt for evidence over the disappearance of Madeleine McCann at a remote reservoir in Portugal are being sent off for analysis.
Authorities have been scouring Barragem do Arade reservoir in the Algarve this week, using sniffer dogs and cutting down trees as part of the search inland from the coastal resort where the then-three-year-old went missing in 2007.
As police concluded their three-day search on Thursday, they confirmed “materials collected” had been sent to Germany for analysis.''

It's shallow though as well! And it seems to be on one side if the researched square closest to the parking ( at least not towards the water)
It's eerie!

Obviously they did a lot more excavations than expected.

So what do you all think? Was the "sudden" stop a reaction of finding NOTHING?

Hard to believe imho...

PS: The trench in the background looks more like being a mass grave, than just a hole.

I wonder if they dug where the dogs marked. I bet those dogs are trained to sniff cremated remains.
I'm not sure about a cremation. Anyone destroying even a small body in this way would have to be sure of absolute solitude.

But it is a method which does seem to work though. There was no trace of the victim in the murder cited below ever found. Although bone fragments were found in the garden, none were identified as human.

So despite the best efforts to establish the presence of forensic evidence none was found. Although there was a lack of DNA on clothing allegedly belonging to the missing woman. Conviction was achieved as a result of circumstantial evidence,

Mr N, who was a fireman in Canada for 14 years before moving to Scotland 30 years ago, said he had smelled burning human flesh while attending fatal fires.
He said: "It's distinctive and it is indelibly on my mind. It is not something you forget easily."

"The very specific targeting of locations on the promontory raises the possibility that German police had taken their source to the scene to pinpoint exactly where Brueckner had stayed."

This makes much sense! Also it could explain the cars brought all the way from Germany...

"Eight carefully excavated holes, up to a foot wide and nearly two feet deep, had been bored into the ground and the soil bagged and removed. Some of the remaining soil contained burnt and blackened flecks of wood.

The focus of the searches suggest that officers had used ground radar and metal detectors to target specific locations. Similar holes had been dug across the promontory, some clustered around recent fire pits."

"Correio da Manha, a Portuguese newspaper, claimed that a “relevant clue” – or “trace” – was uncovered after police were seen photographing one site at the dam.

However, it was unclear whether this was related to Madeleine, as sources close to the German investigation suggested they believe the site could be linked to other victims.

The numerous excavations at the headland have raised the possibility police were working on an assumption that Brueckner may even have hidden an electronic storage device of images, possibly taken of a number of his victims, at the site."

I have been thinking “Inga”

Random question: is it possible that search dogs have been trained to search for something unique to the CB investigation, rather than something they may usually search for? Or would that be too much ‘honeytrapping’ for want of a better word? As a (poor) example, would it be legally permissible to train a dog to search for chlorinated swimsuits rather than any kind of clothing?

The journalist said that the area where they have dug holes is where CB is thought to have hoarded things? Also it appear there were pyrrhes there. Sniffer dogs must have pinpointed the exact area where they dug. Shallow pits though!
looks like pretty difficult ground to dig a deep hole in.
aside: i wonder how many people will now be going up there digging under every rock?

It looks to me like that particular area was cleared before the investigation - in other words it looks like a bush campsite. It seem to be well covered with trees on all sides.

If this is the case, the area has probably been used many times over the last 16 years.

We know the media at the box factory was found in 2016 but do we know when it was buried? Best indication would be when Charlie the dog died - wasn’t that at the kiosk around 2014.

The reports suggest ‘analysis’ which to me means that they are trying to extract something from the soil or other fragments found in the holes.

I am doubtful they will find clothing fibres or any media devices, 16 years is a long time.

It's a pity we don't have photos of that area before excavation work started.

I do wonder if, in the years after MM’s disappearance, CB perhaps returned to this area at the dam to remove or destroy any evidence. Especially considering the close shaves of the original lake search at this dam, and the search of his ‘dead dog’ property.

He was in the Algarve in June 2017, when he was caught masturbating in front of an 11-year-old Portuguese girl. He’s a very seasonal criminal as much as a seasoned one, always there with the school holidaymakers.

“Soil samples contain stones, pollen and a few other small components that can be transmitted during an act. This means that if I find old shoes, for example, that now contain exactly the same components as in the earth, I know the person was there,” forensic biologist Dr. Mark Benecke explained to RTL.”
