Media Release
28 April 2014—am

Up to 9 military aircraft and 12 ships are planned to assist in today's search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

Today the Australian Maritime Safety Authority has planned a visual search area totaling approximately 54,921 square kilometres. The centre of the search area lies approximately 1667 kilometres north west of Perth.

Bluefin-21 has completed mission 15 and has commenced mission 16 this morning.

No contacts of interest have been found to date.

Bluefin-21 will continue to examine the areas adjacent to the focused underwater search area during mission 16.

The weather forecast for today indicates the cold front will move out of the search area and be replaced by a southerly trade flow, sea swells of four to five metres.

Any further information will be made public if, and when, it becomes available

he Bluefin-21 will continue to be used in the operation, Mr Abbott said.

However, an intensified search will involve different technology.

"In particular, using specialised sidescan sonar equipment towed behind ships to scan the seabed for evidence of aircraft wreckage," the prime minister said.

The Australian government, in consultation with the Malaysian government, would be willing to engage one or more commercial companies to undertake the work, he said.

He said that would cost an estimated $60 million and Australia would seek contributions from other nations.

MH370 search being scaled back
April 28, 2014
The Australian prime minister said that It is now "highly unlikely" that any aircraft debris will be found
on the ocean's surface.

PERTH: The search for missing Malaysia Airlines plane MH370 is being scaled back, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced.

He says 52 days after the plane disappeared with 239 people on board, the search is now entering a “new phase” focused on searching the ocean floor.
It is now “highly unlikely” that any aircraft debris will be found on the ocean’s surface, he says.

“By this stage, 52 days into the search, most material would have become waterlogged and sunk,” he told reporters.

Search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 a mammoth task that could take years

April 28, 2014

THE sobering reality is that finding the resting place of the sunken naval flagship HMAS Sydney, lost for 67 years, was an easier undertaking than locating the missing Malaysia Airlines jet.

Nonetheless, there was an unrelenting desire among the families to establish the precise location of the wreckage, just as there is now for the families of MH370.

And there would be another benefit in finding Sydney: it would hopefully put to bed some of the many conspiracies as to what had befallen the ship.

The tales around Sydney grew and became, says Dr Lewis, “deeply hurtful” to the families. He sees the same thing happening again with MH370

"Asked what would have happened if the plane – which went undetected for hours
as it blipped across Malaysian radars – had entered Israeli airspace, Ramot said,
“It would not go unnoticed, that’s for sure.

" Unidentified investigative sources" told the daily that co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid attempted to make a call from his cellphone

"A range of theories as to its fate have emerged – from hijacking to crashing to being diverted for use in a terror attack, possibly against Israel.
Later theories have become even wilder, ranging from an onboard fire to a suicide mission. "

But the Joint Agency Coordination Centre, which is coordinating the multinational search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane, has dismissed GeoResonance's claims.

"The Australian-led search is relying on information from satellite and other data to determine the missing aircraft's location," the JACC said in a statement.

"The location specified by the GeoResonance report is not within the search arc derived from this data. The joint international team is satisfied that the final resting place of the missing aircraft is in the southerly portion of the search arc."

The search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is commencing a new phase and will transition over the coming weeks to an intensified undersea search.

In the meantime Bluefin-21, which has completed its search of the 314 square kilometre area around the detections made by the Towed Pinger Locator, will continue to search adjacent areas.

Over the coming days the vessels that remain on standby for the search will transition to and from the search area.

A Royal Australian Air Force AP-3C Orion also remains on standby in Perth.

Other vessels and aircraft that have been engaged in the surface and aerial search will now transition to their respective national tasking in the coming days.

The Inmarsat analysis is "based on testable physics and mathematics," the source said, and has been reviewed by U.S., British and Malaysian authorities as well as an independent satellite company.

The United States, Japan, New Zealand and Malaysia all confirmed that their aircraft were returning to base. There was no immediate word from China, which accounted for most of the passengers on board.

As many as 14 ships from Australia, China and Britain were involved in scanning the ocean surface for debris or black box signals but many of these are also pulling out.
