Malaysian Airlines earnings set to show financial burden of loss of MH370

May 14, 2014

Malaysian Airlines will report first-quarter earnings later on Thursday that are set to provide confirmation of just how badly the already loss-making carrier's finances have been hit by the vanishing of flight MH370 on March 8.

Struggling for years to cope with high costs and nimbler regional and international rivals, Malaysian Airline Systems Bhd's (MASM.KL) quarterly performance has been made so uncertain by reduced traffic and potential costs linked to the jet's unexplained disappearance that analysts say they simply can't issue January-March estimates

Since MH370 disappeared, MAS shares have slumped as much as 20 percent. Its market value has tumbled about 80 percent over the past five years, while the broader Malaysian market .KLSE has risen about 80 percent

Flight 370 search chief: Hunt for plane is the most difficult in history

May 13, 2014

The man leading the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 says the search is the most difficult in human history, but modern technology greatly increases the chances of finding the missing plane.

The four underwater signals that search teams detected are still "the most promising lead" investigators have in the search for the Boeing 777, Angus Houston told CNN's Anna Coren on Monday.

Houston told CNN it's still too soon to rule out any of the signals

Houston told CNN the hunt for the plane is even more difficult than that for Air France Flight 447, which disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean in 2009.

Captain (Rtd) Abdul Rahman Omar said that the most glaring mistake of the aviation department was not following annexe 11 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

“Annexe 11 relates to communication with an aircraft in distress, between the air traffic controllers (ATC) and the pilot of the plane,” said Rahman.

“The ATC was to have contacted the pilot and directed him to communicate with air traffic controllers in Ho Chi Minh but the procedure underannexe 11 was not followed.”
Rahman believed that it was a mistake on the DCA’s part not to trust the radar data provided by the air force hours after the plane had disappeared.

“I believe the air force received the radar data in Pulau Perak where MH370 was last pinged on the radar. But the DCA did not trust the data,” he added.

Missing flight MH370: Live updates as Malaysia, Australia and China agree to reexamine all data on vanished jet

May 17, 2014

9:53 am: Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein says the whole world should take the blame for the unsuccessful search for flight MH370.

The unprecedented hunt for the missing airline has not yet uncovered a single piece of debris to prove the plane's last location.

It has now been 70 days since the aircraft disappeared.

“If you want to apportion blame, you have to apportion blame to nearly the whole world,” Hussein said.

The family members of the seven crewmembers claimed that MAS stopped caregiving services and severed all communication with them since May 8, after learning family members had acquired the services of a lawyer.

The family members said they had hired a lawyer to advise them on certain legal matters, such as legal documents they were asked to sign.

Shim said that MAS abruptly stopped communicating to them and they had no one to turn to for information or updates on the search.

“The plane is somewhere, maybe without MAS [Malaysia Airlines] markings,” he said. “It is a waste of time and money to look for debris or oil slick or to listen for pings from the black box.”

This is quite an interesting short article, unsure if the previous PM is just weighing in with his tuppence worth, or if he's onto something...? He seems very respected in his country & don't think he'd speak out if he wasn't totally sure.

I'm only posting as i'm totally sure it's MSM and isn't conspiracy theory based...

Intan Maizura Othman, wife of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 steward, has baby

May 20, 2014

WRAPPED in a blanket and only a few hours old, tiny Muhammad has no idea he will never meet his father or of the joy his birth has brought to so many people in his homeland and across the world.

The baby, born in Kuala Lumpur, was delivered 73 days after his airline steward father, Muhammad Hazrin, and 238 other souls disappeared on board Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

Intan Maizura Othman, a fellow Malaysia Airlines flight attendant, gave birth without her beloved husband by her side on Monday night. But images of the tiny boy, swathed in a blanket and a teddy in his cradle, have brought a rare moment of joy for so many still mourning the loss of loved ones on board the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200.

“In moving forward, it is imperative for us to provide helpful information to the next of kin and general public — which will include the data communication logs as well as relevant explanation to enable the reader to understand the data provided. It must also be noted that the data communication logs is just one of the many elements of the investigation information,” the two bodies said in a statement.

“In line with our commitment towards greater transparency, all parties are working for the release of the data communication logs and the technical description of the analysis for public consumption.”

Today a Chinese survey ship sets sail to start mapping the ocean bed in an expanded area of the South Indian Ocean (weather permitting .. it is almost winter).

They are still negotiating private contracts for the use of more powerful sonar equipment, as parts of the seabed in the expanded area are thought to be more than 7 km (4½ miles) deep. The Chinese survey ship will help them to determine the actual depths and topography they will be dealing with.

... Chinese ship Zhu Kezhen will conduct a bathymetric survey of the Indian Ocean floor as directed by Australian air crash investigators ....

MH370 search: More Malaysian companies to be involved
May 21, 2014

The Committee for Assets Deployment is identifying opportunities and room for involvement of Malaysia companies in the search and rescue effort of flight MH370.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Committee for Assets Deployment under the Defence Ministry has identified opportunities and room for involvement of Malaysian companies in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

Its secretariat in a statement here today said the committee had received several proposals from some companies to contribute to the underwater search for the missing plane.
They are specifically related to side-scan sonars, multi-beam echo sounders and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs).

“The proposals are being evaluated based on suitability and costs that will arise,” the statement said.

One can see that the more answers Hishammuddin gives, the more questions arise.

By Lam Choong Wah
Frankly, I nearly fell off my chair when I read the news quoting Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein saying “If you want to apportion blame, you have to apportion blame to nearly the whole world” when he was asked about the MH370 tragedy in a press conference recently.

Being the defence minister, which is the highest rank of administrator, he should show us how a responsible man behaves and administers such an important ministry.
But, he often let us down whenever he is confronted with questions related to MH370.
Instead of blaming the whole world, it would be better to give more convincing answers to address the still unanswered questions.

The air force and Hishammuddin keep on insisting MH370 was not intercepted because it was not identified as a hostile target.

But, how did they conclude the blips that appeared on military primary radar were not a hostile target? What are the criteria used by them to make such conclusion?
