Saturday's Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing was scheduled to take 5 1/2 hours — one of the shorter routes worldwide for the 777. Malaysia Airlines has its 777s configured to seat 282 passengers with business class and coach cabins.

In addition to its ability to fly long distances and hold a large number of passengers, airlines like the 777 because they can fill its long belly with lots of profitable cargo. The jet weighs 316,800 (143 tons) pounds empty but is able to carry another 340,000 (155 tons) pounds of passengers, luggage, cargo and fuel. Less than a third of the space in the belly is taken up by luggage.

okay okay, now I have lent a bit more towards the terrorism side......someone said back a few pages that the group starting with U who were responsible for the stabbing attack last week, had a problem with Malaysia as well.....

This is saying they were worried about at Taiwanese airports and flights from Beijing to there.....

hmmmm starting to be a bit too coincidental

I have found this phone thing mystifying from the start. I imagine phone operators have done their utmost to track phones from the start. I know there can be explanations for a phone line ringing even if the phone is deep under the water and broken but I wouldn't think that was common...

According to China.org.cn, 19 families have signed a joint statement saying that their family members' cell phones connected, but the calls hung up. The relatives have asked Malaysia Airlines to reveal any information they might be hiding, seeking an explanation for the eerie phone connections. The relatives have complained that the Malaysina Airlines is not responding as actively as it should.

Similarly, a Chinese Internet activist and journalist based in New York said he had received an email claiming the plane had been attacked in protests at Chinese “oppression and persecution” of its Uighur minority. The email said the attack was also a personal act of revenge against the Malaysian government, which has “cruelly persecuted me before.”

other claims starting to come in

Authorities brush off claims by unheard-of group taking responsibility for missing plane

Hishammuddin denies reports dubious duo in MH370 had 'Asian features'

"Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein brushed off suggestions today that the two passengers travelling with stolen passports on board MH370 had “Asian features”, contradicting reports attributing the remark to Cabinet colleague Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi."

Does anyone know anything about phones, aren't they able to track the last known location or where the phone was when it was called? I know many were likely switched off from the start of the flight but we know the airline allows texts and calls and you'd think there would be use of social media and texting at least on the ascent

Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: Man Claims Seeing Plane Plunging into Sea

Even as the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 remains untraced, a man claims to have witnessed the aircraft plunging into the South China Sea.

Alif Fathi Abdul Hadi, 29, from Ketereh, in the Malaysian state of Kelantan, has lodged a report with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) over the claimed sighting of the aircraft as it was going down.

The businessman said he had seen a bright white light, similar to those used by planes during night flights, moving towards the sea at about 01:45am local time on the day the Beijing-bound Boeing 777 vanished.

Could they have flown low and crashed on some land? Could explain the cell phones at first just ringing. Sure they are dead by now.

Could they have electrical issues that kept them from communication and possible no idea which direction to go? I am clueless about planes.

This is so scary and sad :( I hate flying.

Yeh I've just been reading about the same thing - if it is indeed true and not a network error that is making it appear this way but nothing more than that, then that is super WTF!!!???

Looks like Hishammuddin Hussein is going to visit the search and rescue operation tomorrow. I'm not trying to downplay his motives or intent here, but I think that public officials should probably use more professional-sounding language when communicating with the world...

Trying [unsuccessfully] to find a direct link to a story, but a UK news ticker says that VN Express is reporting that "a commercial plane from out of Hong Kong has reported seeing several large pieces of debris 60km southeast of Vung Tau, a coastal city in Vietnam." If anyone can find a direct link to the original story, please post it!
