This might be a really stupid question, but can any Americans tell me, will this affect air travel in the USA? I am flying out of Detroit this week. Should I allot extra time to clear security?

I live in metro Detroit. DTW is among the most efficient airports I've seen. If you are departing from McNamara terminal, check-in, security, etc. is usually pretty smooth. If you're on an international flight, you should probably arrive at least two hours prior to departure; most other flights an hour to 75 minutes before departure. Call the airline for updates.

Expecting the worst: Families await news of missing Malaysian airliner

By Ralph Ellis. Tom Watkins and Chelsea J. Carter, CNN

(CNN) -- Nobody knows exactly what happened to a Malaysia Airlines plane that disappeared Saturday, but families of the 239 people on board are waiting and expecting the worst.

Air traffic controllers lost track of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 not long after it left Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, on its way to Beijing. More than half the passengers were Chinese nationals.

"We have no idea where this aircraft is right now," Malaysia Airlines Vice President of Operations Control Fuad Sharuji said on CNN's "AC360."

There's even confusion about where the plane might have gone down.

Vietnamese and Chinese state media, both citing Vietnam's military, reported the plane crashed off the southern coast of Vietnam...

So now CNN is strolling the breaking news alert from the tabloid site earlier about a passenger on board with a stolen passport but no link yet.

I imagine they are researching every passenger on that plane now...

You'd think that if it was terrorism that someone would have claimed responsibility for it by now. JMO

There is (as always) some chatter on various sites about this being a terrorist attack. For me, in this instance, it seems more likely that it was a terrorist than a mechanical failure, with pilot suicide being second. Why?

~The plane had just reached cruising altitude (35000 ft)
~the strange direction change at the last moment (per FlightAware)
~no chance for a mayday or any other communication to be made
~the "missing passport"
~the delay of the announcement that the plane had been lost
~the recent attack in China *by* terrorists
~Some "eye witness" accounts of a meteorite-like event (although I don't necessarily believe these - if there were witness accounts, they should have a good idea where the plane went in, no?)

If it is terrorism, I am thinking it's a bomb that was set to explode at 35,000 feet...in the baggage compartment.

Prayers for everyone...

There's also a report that an AUS passenger listed wasn't on the flight and his passport was also stolen.

I often check out flightradar24, and the tracking data they provided was totally at odds with initial reports. It does appear they were correct though as eventually authorities have also stated the plane is in that area - 15 hours later :(

This shows their tracking - I've run the replay myself and the last thing reported is the plane banking right. I'm following the same pilot forum someone else mentioned (I think) and apparently there are loads of fishing vessels across that stretch of water but they won't be able to report until they get back to harbours..

The stolen passports make me think that two people were on the no fly list and needed new identities.

What if the two stolen passports checked baggage but didnt board that flight? Is that possible?

With all of our international flights, the screening is so intense that I don't know how they could have checked baggage but not boarded...although without question, security is much tighter flying in and out of the UK and in and out of the USA. When we have done flights in and out of Singapore and Malaysia (granted 17 and 15 years ago...now we fly through Europe), our passports went through the scanner again as we boarded the aircraft. My guess is that whoever got on there with stolen passports were indeed on the plane. Of course, as always, MOO :)

Just woke up and rushed to check on flight 370. They still haven't' found it? (unless the oil slicks are where the crash occurred). Stolen passports from 2 countries or is it just one? If two, two stolen passports on one flight seems to suggest there was some sort of terrorism and a lot of planning to pull that off.

Oil slicks found in hunt for missing Malaysia jet

Eileen Ng and Chris Brummitt
Associated Press

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Vietnamese air force planes on Saturday spotted two large oil slicks close to where a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 went missing earlier in the day, the first sign that the aircraft carrying 239 people had crashed.

The air force planes were part of a multinational search operation launched after Flight MH370 fell off radar screens less than an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing early Saturday morning.

The oil slicks were spotted late Saturday off the southern tip of Vietnam and were each between 10 kilometers (6 miles) and 15 kilometers (9 miles) long, the Vietnamese government said in a statement. There was no confirmation that the slicks were related to the missing plane, but the statement said they were consistent with the kinds that would be produced by the two fuel tanks of a crashed jetliner.

Two-thirds of the missing plane’s passengers were from China, while others were from elsewhere in Asia, North America and Europe...

They didn't find the Air France crash for a couple of days, and in this case it appears they may initially have been looking in the wrong place.

While some questioned the releasing of the manifest so soon, in this case it has helped. Had these 2 men not come forward to say they were not on the plane, they would not be looking into who the actual 2 passengers were. I was reading comments with an article and they said there should be a database with stolen passports. Is there not one already?

One other thought I had was the that there has been no reports of any passengers calling/texting anyone. No time to communicate any trouble, maybe the reason. idk jmo
