[h=1]Sheriff: ‘I Was Sick To My Stomach’ After Being Told To Stand Down[/h]
“I was sick to my stomach like everybody else. … This was urban warfare, no question about it. They were coming in absolutely beaten down. The [city officers] got out of their vehicles, thanked us profusely for being there, apologized to us for having to be there. They said we could have handled this, we were very capable of handling this, but we were told to stand down, repeatedly told to stand down,” he said. “I had never heard that order come from anyone — we went right out to our posts as soon as we got there, so I never heard the mayor say that. But repeatedly these guys, and there were many high-ranking officials from the Baltimore City Police Department … and these guys told me they were essentially neutered from the start.

That is absolutely heartbreaking!

I had suspected it, but it is heart rending to hear it. So glad he is speaking out!

“I heard it myself over the Baltimore City police radio that I had tethered to my body-armor vest, I heard it repeatedly. ‘Stand down, stand down, stand down! Back up, back up, retreat, retreat!’ I couldn’t believe those words. Those are words I’ve never heard in my law enforcement vocabulary,” he said.

Disgraceful. And what's more disgraceful is her having sharpton beside her during her press conference with a backdrop of "no justice no peace."

Even if the LEO(s) end up being straight up guilty, "no justice, no peace," is not something she should be promoting. If they are guilty it's then up to the legal system to indict, charge, and then prosecute them at trial.

MOOOOOOOOOO

I'm thinking that when things quiet down she just might quietly step down. After the Govenor came to town she hasn't been shown in the office. She isn't commenting on new info coming out. Is she even doing mayor things now?

I guess this is why the relative of the driver did an interview yesterday and said it happened outside the van

I didn't know she comes from a family of cops. Kind of hard to believe.

From what I have read they only give one report. But they usually give oral, preliminary reports as info comes in. Not necessarily conclusions or determinations but reports on what they have found to that point.

[h=3]Officer in fatal arrest once hospitalized over mental health[/h]The highest-ranking Baltimore police officer in the arrest that led to Freddie Gray's death was hospitalized in April 2012 over mental health concerns for an unknown duration and had his guns confiscated by local sheriff's deputies, according to records from the sheriff's office and court obtained by The Associated Press.

That would explain why the police were standing around and not doing much. It was scary watching that, and then I figured maybe that afternoon because it was basically kids, from the high school causing such destruction that maybe that was why, wow.

Sheriff Michael Lewis has also said things like: ""As long as I'm the sheriff in this county, I will not allow the federal government to come in here and strip my citizens of their right to bear arms. I can tell you this, if they attempt to do that, it would be an all-out civil war, no question about it.""

So, apparently he doesn't feel similarly about the First Amendment.

I am glad they only had him in the background on guard duty and not the front lines.

More from Pop's link Officer in fatal arrest once hospitalized over mental health:

Deputies reported that Rice appeared "normal and soft spoken" and said he had been seeking "sympathy and attention." But citing "credible information," the deputies confiscated both his official and personal guns, called his commanding officer and transported Rice to the Carroll Hospital Center. The weapons included his .40-caliber police pistol, a 9 mm handgun, an AK-47-style rifle, a .22-caliber rifle and two shotguns.

<snip>

It also was not immediately clear whether or when all of Rice's guns were returned. The sheriff's report said the weapons "should be returned back to owner pending determination of the (censored)." But Rice was accused in June 2012 of removing a semi-automatic handgun from the trunk of his personal vehicle and threatening McAleer, according to a complaint filed in 2013. A police report about that June 2012 incident omitted any reference to allegations that Rice brandished a weapon but noted that officers who responded spent hours searching for Rice over concerns for his welfare.

I really have no words, except why was he still on the force?

I'm of the opinion that this Sheriff would defend anyone's first amendment right to free speech. It's a whole different ballgame when you loot, burn and destroy. That is not considered a freedom of speech. No one ever has the right to throw rocks, bottles or do anything to harm a police officer, fireman or citizen.

An attorney representing Rice, Michael Davey, did not respond Thursday to phone calls from AP asking to discuss the sheriff's report about Rice's hospitalization or gun seizures. Earlier in the week, he dismissed the significance of Rice also being placed on administrative leave as a result of a complaint in January 2013 by McAleer's then-husband, Andrew, a former Baltimore firefighter who said Rice threatened him and asked for a court protective order. Those threat claims were initially reported by The Guardian newspaper.

<snip>

"People file peace orders all the time," Davey said. "The only thing I'd comment on is, any issues similar to this had nothing to do with his ability to perform his duties as a Baltimore police officer."

I think that unknown stop may be key in the investigation. I wonder what the video shows....did other officers show up at the stop or was it just the lone cop, CNN just said only one officer in the van, that made that stop. Did he get out of the van and go to the back of the van? LE being mum about it leads to believe there may be something there.

I disagree since he was acting crazy enough to need leg irons.

IMO the fact that LE stopped the van and put leg irons on him does not prove his state of health at that time. If LE wanted it to look like he was fighting them in the van, they would stop and put the leg irons on him to cover up that he was severely injured prior to that time.

Davis did not release the time for each of these stops, but police have already said that at 8:46 a.m., the driver of the van reported that he believes Gray is acting “irate.” An officer asks the van to stop so paperwork could be completed, according to Baltimore police. At that point, Gray is taken out of the vehicle, and police said he was placed in leg irons and then put back in the van. Police have not specified when this occurred in relation to the van’s various stops.
