Soon after Kimberly Mileo disappeared, roses mysteriously began to appear under the windshield wiper of her boyfriend, Dana Hudson's, car.

Hudson, then 24, was the primary suspect in the disappearance of 20-year-old Mileo, who vanished 30 years ago this week.

The rose mimicked one found on the dashboard of her car when it was found in Southern Prince George's County. It had been given to her by Hudson the day before she vanished.

Mileo's body has never been found, despite one of the largest investigations in Prince George's County history. No one has ever been charged in the case, which police call a homicide.

To catch a killer

Anyone with information in the Kimberly Mileo case is asked to call Prince George's County Police Sgt. Rick Fulginiti at 301-772-4925 or Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS (8477).

She is among 1,400 unsolved murder victims on the books in Prince George's County, one of a handful of cases where no trace of a body is ever found. Mileo's disappearance dominated local headlines in the summer of 1983. It has now faded from the memories of all but her family and a few others. For them, it left a space in their lives that was never filled, and a sense of justice left undone.

"I've had to learn to live all over again," said Mileo's mother, Diane Beck. "I have to believe in karma. It's the only thing I hang on [to]." Beck broke down when she heard the news of her only daughter's disappearance and was unable to even talk with police. Eventually, she moved to California, hoping the distance would help her forget. But that didn't happen, and she returned to Crofton, Md. "She didn't even get a chance to become a woman," Beck said.

Michael Mileo, Kimberly's father, will turn 70 if he lives until August. He is suffering from head and neck cancer that has kept him from eating without using a feeding tube for more than three years. The cancer has persisted, and he is undergoing chemotherapy.

"I'm in bad shape," he said. "I just want some closure."

On the morning of June 8, 1983, Kimberly Mileo, just days shy of turning 21, had gone swimming with girlfriends. She then spent much of the day with her boyfriend, Hudson.

She was a diminutive woman -- less than 5 feet tall and weighing less than 100 pounds. After graduating from Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro, she took a job at Bloomingdale's at White Flint Mall in Montgomery County.

When she didn't return home the next morning after swimming, Mileo's father called Hudson, who said she had left his family's home in Croom about 2:30 a.m.

Two days after the disappearance, as a police investigation began, Mileo's car, a 1972 Chevy Vega, was found by Hudson's brothers locked and abandoned on a secluded stretch of Croom Road, about 12 miles from the Hudson house.

Inside the vehicle, police found a purse, wallet and a yellow flip-flop sandal. They also found the single rose.

Investigators questioned Hudson and his younger brothers for hours. Hudson failed a lie-detector test, and the family hired an attorney. The attorney advised him not to talk further to police.

The disappearance of Mileo triggered a massive search for her body throughout the southern county, which involved hundreds of local volunteers, police officers, divers and a helicopter with heat-sensitive devices.

Months into the investigation, police publicly released an FBI psychological profile, which theorized that the unknown offender may be feeling intense guilt because he did not mean to kill Mileo.

During this time, Hudson began finding a single rose under his windshield wiper at random times.

The Hudson family suspected police officers of a psychological ploy. Hudson's father claimed he was injured in an encounter with police at his business, Penn Dower Petroleum in Upper Marlboro. Both the elder Hudson and the police officer sued, with both cases eventually getting tossed.

Mileo's case simmered for years. A Prince George's County grand jury was convened to look into it in 1997. Witnesses, including Hudson and his family, were interviewed. No charges followed.

Hudson, now 54, lives in Calvert County in a ramshackle one-story home at the end of a dirt road, about 15 miles from where he last saw Mileo. In an interview last week, he said he didn't kill his girlfriend. He said he, too, wants the case solved and noted police now have his DNA after he was convicted of a felony drug charge in 2007. He theorized Mileo was killed by someone who lives near where her car was found.

"I do think about her," Hudson said. "It makes me sad to think that someone's life would be taken by another human being. It's a shame."...

Bumping Kim's case up.

I wonder if there has ever been an overhead infrared analysis of the Hudson farm property done in an attempt to locate a possible gravesite.

Also, it would be interesting to compare overhead views which might show any new building on the property.

I did a comparison of the farm from 2 pictures, 1980 and 2005 which were the newest choices available
( besides new maps like Google or Bing). If I had the right place on the map, they have actually added alot after 1980. Approximately 3 -4 new buildings and what looks to be a pool. They cut down alot of trees for the new buildings. It looks more like a farm now then it did back in 1980. The new buildings look mostly like stable / animal type buildings.
With the story of her boyfriend being gone 2 days after he was questioned by police, I think her body is somewhere else other then the farm(if he did it). He says they went to ocean city to look for her. I hope the police got receipts for the two days. I've been to ocean city a few times and I always come home with receipts for food or gas. You can't goto ocean city and not buy the awesome food! If they were gone two days, she could be anywhere. I was going to look at unidentified in md, but may have to do all the surrounding states.

Richard,
It seems like this case has been in quciksand for years. It sounds like every investigation and look into this case has always centered around Dana and the Hudsons. The 80's were a wild time or so I am told. I was born in them and remember the later 80's well. One thing that is synonymous with the 80's was drugs. Old habits die hard and it seems as though Dana was arrested recently for drugs. Is it possible that Kim knew something, or saw something she shouldn't have and had to pay the price? I am just purely speculating here but the cops put pressure on the family and never looked elsewhere by the sound of things. Does this appear to be one of those cases where they know who did it for sure but lack the evidence to charge? I know the chances of finding her at this point are basically slim to none. I work 13 miles from where her car was found now and it has spiked my interest in the case again. Should the local police have looked elsewhere and missed the forrest for the trees due to them having tunnel vision on the Hudson's...or is this one cut and dried? Could she have rolled up on a late night drug deal on the backroads and be taken away right there? Was Croom road a good place for DC drug dealers to meet with their suppliers and maybe she was in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Good questions. I don't have the answers, but I can say that one has to consider the circumstances and setting. Croom Road in 1983 was a very lightly traveled road and the area was very rural. Mount Calvert Road (where the Hudson farm was) actually dead ends at the Patuxent River only about a half mile further on.

Drugs might have played a part in this case, but that is not a stated fact in any of the summaries or news coverage that I have seen.

Kim was scheduled to work the following morning at White Flint Mall (North of Washington DC), and if she had left the Hudson farm that evening for her home in Kettering, she would have headed NORTH on Croom Road. Her car was found two days later by one of Dana's brothers 9 miles SOUTH of Mt. Calvert Rd, on Croom Road.

Cars are NEVER parked at the side of Croom Road (except at one place near Mt.Calvert Road). If her Chevy Vega was actually on Croom Road from the time of her Disappearance, why would it take two days for it to be found?

It would seem that the scene was staged or that the car was hastily dumped in a place far from the Hudson farm. It wasn't well thought out. If Kim was supposed to have driven her car 9 miles in the wrong direction to "commit suicide" (as Dana had suggested to her father), why would she park near a thicket far from the Patuxent River? Wearing only one sandal and shorts?

While it is theoretically possible that some stranger entered the picture at some point to abduct Kim at 2 in the morning, it is much more likely that she met her end at the Hudson Farm and is buried there still. If Dana did not actually murder her, he certainly knows what happened to her.

It's crazy that the cops never revisited this case or tried to search the property again. Perhaps they just never succeeded. I know it's private property, but c'mon, you're telling me there's no probable cause with the failure of the lie detector test and the weird "trip" to Ocean City right after his gf goes missing??

Search the place with cadaver dogs (dunno if this works with skeletonize remains). Karen Kamsch comes to mind as another MD "missing person" who was likely killed by those who knew her (abusive relatives in her case, poor thing) and whose remains are presumed buried somewhere on her grandmother's property.

It's too late for her father to get closure :'( But there are other family members and friends who deserve to know what happened to her. Law enforcement's best chance of finding her would be to search the farm, which of course they were prevented from doing many years ago. I agree with you guys that there are many places on a farm where you could conceal remains.

Not to derail from the subject at hand, but I've gone tent camping in nearby Jug Bay Natural Area a couple of times now (part of Patuxent River Park) and it is such a lovely, peaceful setting. Countless farms and churches all around. Actually, just this past summer, I was almost on my way there (had just turned onto Croom Station Rd. from Crain Hwy.) when I hydroplaned and crashed my car into a telephone pole, totaling it! Camping trip cancelled (well, postponed really - made it back there about a month later). I just recall that even though it was a really scary situation (had never been in an actual car crash prior to this incident), people driving past were really nice, stopping and asking if I was okay, did I need help, was anyone on the way to come get me. These seem like friendly, neighborly people - the kind of people you would expect in a rural location like this.

Just judging from the vibe I've gotten whenever I've been there, I find it really hard to believe that Ms. Mileo ran afoul of a drug gang or was just randomly abducted on the open road by some local creep. Croom just isn't that kind of place. I'd wager that the local population's mainly comprised of retirees and perhaps a few families or couples. Not exactly a real "happening" place, no McMansions in sight, or signs of any wild party crowd around there. Very sedate, very conservative type of environment. I love visiting the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary up the road, too. Croom Rd. is a windy country road flanked by the woods and local farms, churches and homes. I'm just not able to picture anything really suspicious or of a criminal nature happening on that road... unless of course it was someone known to Kimberly, ahem, the bf. Some fight gone wrong? Jealousy? Sexual rejection, or an attempt at a breakup, which went horribly wrong? Wouldn't have been too difficult to overpower a petite girl like her, choke her to death quickly... especially if you're used to working on a farm and have excellent upper body strength and a good grip. Ms. Mileo's bf was perhaps into a bad scene and may have been drunk or high at the time. Could have had anger issues, too. I'd like to know more about what kind of person he was when he was younger. I wonder if he and his brothers were regarded as ne'er-do-wells... small community, you never know what kind of reputation the family had.

This person was on my mind when I was searching for local cases on WS.

Up with this case. Let's look past the bribes and do the right thing.

SS, I think I saw your incident on the local news. Did I?

As mentioned in earlier posts, some things just do not make sense in this case.

Kim supposedly left the Hudson home at 2 am in her older model Chevrolet Monza. The car did not turn up for at least two days, and then it was found 9 miles south of where she would have turned north to go home. Found by Dana Hudson's brother.

Dana Hudson claimed that Kim was "suicidal" when he spoke to her father the next morning, and after he was questioned by police, he blew town for a few days, later claiming that he went to look for her on the Atlantic coast.

Looking at all the facts and all the non-cooperation of the Hudson family, it would appear to just about anyone that Kim was murdered by someone in that family and her body secretly buried - either on the grounds of the Hudson farm, on a nearby farm, or somewhere close to where her car was eventually found abandoned. Incidentally, there is a farm which was owned by another Hudson very close to the site of the abandoned car.

Circumstances of Disappearance

At the time of her disappearance, Mileo lived with her father and her step mother in Kettering (Largo), Maryland.
Mileo disappeared on June 9th, 1983 after leaving her boyfriends house in Croom, Maryland at approximately 02.30.

Mileo had spent Wednesday, 8 June 1983 at the home of a girl friend. With them that day was Kim Mileo's boy friend, who lived with his parents only a mile up the road. The three of them spent part of the day sitting around the pool and later all three went for a drive in the rural setting of Croom, all arriving back at home later that afternoon. Croom is a small country village about 20 miles south of Washington DC.

Her friend stated that Mileo and her boyfriend argued periodically during the day, but the disagreements were not serious. Mileo and her boyfriend departed from her friend's residence at approximately 23.00 and headed to his parents' home on Mount Calvert Road.

Mileo's family became concerned when she did not return to their house in Kettering, Maryland the following morning. Her father phoned her boyfriend, who claimed that Mileo left his residence at approximately 02:30 on June 9. Her boyfriend's father supported his son's statement, saying that the broken muffler on Mileo's gray 1972 Chevrolet Vega with Maryland license tags ADG-075 woke him around that time.

Mileo's vehicle was discovered locked and abandoned in the 16300 block of Croom Road on June 11, approximately ten miles from her boyfriend's house. Her boyfriend's brother and his friend located the car. The vehicle was headed in the opposite direction from Mileo's family's residence.

Mileo's purse was inside and there were no apparent signs of a struggle or injury. The car was in a working condition.

Foul play is suspected.
