Police searching for Prince George's County teacher reported missing over weekend - FOX 5 DC
<snipped & BBM>
Police say Mariame Toure Sylla, 59, was last seen around 8 p.m. in the 6500 block of Lake Park Drive in Greenbelt on July 29 when her son says she left home to take a walk.

Greenbelt police closed Schrom Hills Park, which Sylla is known to frequent, located at 6915 Hanover Parkway for several hours Tuesday morning while they conducted a search. FOX 5 was told there was no sign of her.

Family says she's very religious and while she often takes walks in the area, she typically returned home by sunset to pray. But that didn't happen Saturday.

Sylla, who is originally from Africa, is a teacher at Dora Kennedy French Immersion School where she has worked for several years.

On Tuesday, police roped off a section of Schrom Hills Park, a popular park, with crime scene tape to search for her. She was last seen at her apartment on Saturday at 8 p.m., police said, but is believed to have been heading to the Schrom Hills Park, which is about a two-minute walk from her apartment.

A close friend of Toure said this is out of character, as she left her belongings and medication behind and is devoted to her Muslim faith and would not miss her prayers.

[...]

“Very, very concerned, because this is so unlike her. She left her purse at home, her ID, so which means that she was going to walk and come back home,” said KW, a close friend of Toure.

  • She’s part of the community through her volunteer work, attending her mosque and teaching at the local French immersion school.
  • “I’ve met her through the substitute process coming into the school and she’s been very sweet to me. The kids love her. Oh, Madam Sylla,” Conrad-Brown said.
  • Dennis says her phone last pinged in the area where she lives on Lake Park Drive.
  • “What we were concerned about is the fact that she has a medical condition that requires medication and all of her medication is back at her residence,” Dennis said.

Mariam Toure Sylla is a second-grade teacher at Dora Kennedy French Immersion School.

She was last seen on July 29 when her son says she left her home in the 6500 block of Lake Park Drive to take a walk. Police have searched Schrom Hills Park in Greenbelt where the teacher often took walks, but Sylla's whereabouts remained unknown.

Her family says she's very religious, and she often takes walks in the area. She typically returned home by sunset to pray, but that didn't happen this time.

On Friday, Greenbelt Police put to rest speculation that’s been circulating in the community that an unidentified body found near the Capital Beltway in Forestville Tuesday might be Sylla.

Greenbelt Police said, "There's nothing that would make us believe that is our person."

Melinda Conrad-Brown, who’s child is a student that was being taught by Sylla, was one of the vigil's organizers.

“We’re all grateful for that but she’s still out there somewhere," Conrad-Brown said. "So we have to find her. We have to do what we have to do to make sure that not just Prince George’s County people are aware but the whole D.C., Washington, Virginia region, because she could be anywhere."

Students and parents went door-to-door in Greenbelt, Maryland, Friday evening asking if anyone had seen their teacher who’s been missing since Saturday.

[...]

The number of people gathered at a vigil for Toure’s safe return said much about how loved she is and by how many.

Principal James Spence described staff reaction upon hearing the news she was missing.

“On day one, ran out and started looking,” he said. “In the first hours, we were getting texts that they were going to go out and search these parks.”

“I prayed I would never know someone on a missing person poster, but now it’s my reality,” she told WTOP.

Police say Toure, who took regular walks in Prince George’s County’s Schrom Hills Park, went for a stroll last Saturday. Greenbelt Police Chief Rick Bowers, who spoke at Friday’s vigil, said their investigation has shown her regular walks would be anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, and end before sunset.

“We want her home as safely as soon as possible. I mean, we wanted her home yesterday,” said Latanza Wilson, another Dora Kennedy parent.

“We are just trying to be there for her, as if she is our sister, mother, or daughter — our best friend,” she added.

[…]

“I want to get her back really bad. She is one of the best teachers I ever knew,” said Ashton, a rising fourth grader who was taught by Toure in third grade.

“She was really kind to all of us,” Ashton told WTOP. “She is very precious to me, and all of my friends.”

At a press conference Thursday, Greenbelt Police Department Chief Richard Bowers said they have performed an extensive search of Schrom Hills Park and do not believe Sylla is in that vicinity. Bowers said they also have examined her financial records, cell phone records, and social media records to no avail.

"I believe that somewhere out there somebody who has seen her, knows where she is, and can provide important information as to her whereabouts," Bowers said. He also added that there is no indication that she has left the United States.

Police 'confident' someone has seen missing Greenbelt teacher - WUSA9

Greenbelt Maryland’s Police Chief Richard Bowers says he is "confident" there is someone who has seen missing teacher Mariam Sylla or has information about where she might be.

On Thursday, Bowers appealed for tips as the national website run by the Black and Missing Foundation featured Sylla's case on their website.

[...]

Police are not ruling out foul play, but they say they don’t have any conclusive evidence either way.

Bowers did not say what leads him to be confident there is someone with information. He said an investigation of Sylla’s cell phone records, social media accounts, financial records and possible passport activity have yielded no “positive” results.

[...]

Sylla went missing on July 29 when she did not return from a routine walk near Schrom Hill Park in Greenbelt by her home. Police say her cell phone last pinged in that area, but based on exhaustive searches, investigators say they don’t think she’s anywhere there here now.

[...]

Greenbelt Police also said today they have no information that might link Sylla’s case to the discovery of two unidentified bodies in other parts of Prince George’s County found in the past two weeks.

They continue to classify the Sylla mystery as a “missing persons case”.

Toure said she flew in Monday from Ivory Coast in Africa, to help lead the search for her sister who is a French teacher at the Dora Kennedy French Immersion School in Greenbelt. Her sister, she said, is very religious and would not be missing “for no good reason.”

“We are still expecting to see Mariame,” Toure said.

"I believe that somewhere out there, somebody who has seen her knows where she is and can provide important information as to her whereabouts," Greenbelt Police Chief Richard Bowers said Thursday.

"We have investigated; we're continuing to investigate," Bowers said. "We have other things that we're continuing to work on, but it does take time to go through those avenues to try to pull more information together."

"Keep in mind we will go where the evidence leads us," Bowers said. "If we discover information that would indicate that there was foul play in her disappearance, then that would be the direction our investigation goes."

This is a curious development...

7News learned that Sylla’s adult son Mohamed was arrested in early August on a list of traffic charges dating to June 2018 and a failure to appear in court warrant. The Maryland State Police is the charging agency. He has appeared for bond reviews and has been ordered held without bond. That is unusual for traffic cases.
