Police say Mariame Toure Sylla, 59, was last seen around 8 p.m. in the 6500 block of Lake Park Drive in Greenbelt on July 29 when her son says she left home to take a walk.

Greenbelt police closed Schrom Hills Park, which Sylla is known to frequent, located at 6915 Hanover Parkway for several hours Tuesday morning while they conducted a search. FOX 5 was told there was no sign of her.

Family says she's very religious and while she often takes walks in the area, she typically returned home by sunset to pray. But that didn't happen Saturday.

Sylla, who is originally from Africa, is a teacher at Dora Kennedy French Immersion School where she has worked for several years.

She was last seen at her apartment on Saturday at 8 p.m., police said, but is believed to have been heading to the Schrom Hills Park, which is about a two-minute walk from her apartment.

A close friend of Toure said this is out of character, as she left her belongings and medication behind and is devoted to her Muslim faith and would not miss her prayers.

She was last seen on July 29 when her son says she left her home in the 6500 block of Lake Park Drive to take a walk. Police have searched Schrom Hills Park in Greenbelt where the teacher often took walks, but Sylla's whereabouts remained unknown.

Her family says she's very religious, and she often takes walks in the area. She typically returned home by sunset to pray, but that didn't happen this time.

Fliers have been posted across the Greenbelt community in hopes that someone has seen Sylla.

On Friday, Greenbelt Police put to rest speculation that’s been circulating in the community that an unidentified body found near the Capital Beltway in Forestville Tuesday might be Sylla.

Greenbelt Police said, "There's nothing that would make us believe that is our person."

Melinda Conrad-Brown, who’s child is a student that was being taught by Sylla, was one of the vigil's organizers.

“We’re all grateful for that but she’s still out there somewhere," Conrad-Brown said. "So we have to find her. We have to do what we have to do to make sure that not just Prince George’s County people are aware but the whole D.C., Washington, Virginia region, because she could be anywhere."

Police say Toure, who took regular walks in Prince George’s County’s Schrom Hills Park, went for a stroll last Saturday. Greenbelt Police Chief Rick Bowers, who spoke at Friday’s vigil, said their investigation has shown her regular walks would be anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, and end before sunset.

At a press conference Thursday, Greenbelt Police Department Chief Richard Bowers said they have performed an extensive search of Schrom Hills Park and do not believe Sylla is in that vicinity. Bowers said they also have examined her financial records, cell phone records, and social media records to no avail.

"I believe that somewhere out there somebody who has seen her, knows where she is, and can provide important information as to her whereabouts," Bowers said. He also added that there is no indication that she has left the United States.

The son of a missing Prince George's County elementary school teacher has been arrested and is being held without bond, 7News learned on Wednesday. But the current charges against him are unrelated to his mother’s disappearance.

7News learned that Sylla’s adult son Mohamed was arrested in early August on a list of traffic charges dating to June 2018 and a failure to appear in court warrant. The Maryland State Police is the charging agency. He has appeared for bond reviews and has been ordered held without bond. That is unusual for traffic cases. He is currently being held at the Howard County Jail.

Last Thursday, Greenbelt Police Chief Richard Bowers said during a press conference that Mariame Toure Sylle’s adult son, who lives with her, had been cooperating with authorities.
