Baltimore County, MD - Michelle Lee Rust - Missing Persons Case
renderTimingPixel.png

Original Post: What happened to Michelle Rust? : UnresolvedMysteries

Possible lead: I've lived in Baltimore County, MD my entire life. I specifically remember something taking place when I was a little kid. I'm 26 now, in 2002 I was 9 (When this took place). It was summer time, Me and two friends, one two years younger one was one year older. The friend who was one year older than me is still one of my best friends. Anyway, We went to the park up the street from my house. We sat there, hung out a bit, and were about to leave. My memory of that day is fuzzy, All except for what took place in that moment. We were leaving the park, We walked out of the gate, And I remember coming up from behind us on the street next to the park was this dark green van swerving back and forth erratically. Through the passenger side window of the van I saw a woman grabbing at her throat rocking back and forth. The passenger door had popped open and closed back up from the van swerving before coming to an immediate halt. The passenger door opened and out jumped a woman. She had light brownish/reddish shoulder length hair bangs cut above her eyes. She was wearing a low cut neck shirt I can not remember the color honestly. She had a cord, rope, or belt around her neck and her face was bloody. She came running towards us and the park in general screaming and yelling "HELP PLEASE HELP ME!". When she got out of the van she dropped these bags that were, It appeared to be, On her arms like when you go shopping using forearms instead of hands to hold. After she jumped out and started running towards the park A Big Black Man, Heavy set, Bald, Tall, Wearing some dark outfit ran around the front of the van and ran up behind the woman. She was running with a limp and He caught up with Her rather quick. Me and my friends (Being kids) got scared and ran back towards the park away from them. I remember turning and seeing the black guy running up behind her and hitting her with some kind of stick, club, baton, bar, or something. She dropped to her knees screaming as he was hitting her from behind. He picked her up off the ground as she was crying while still trying to yell out for help, walked over to the van, opened the back door, through her in, ran back around the front, hopped in, a sped away. After this we went back to my house down the street, we told our parents, my friends mom called the police and we heard nothing of it again. It was actually earlier today I saw a story for missing persons cold cases on google in my area. I saw this womans picture and got that blood rushing to your head, light heavy feeling. I knew the face. I looked into it more, I saw she owned the same van I saw exactly. Color, model, everything. Same time frame and during the summer too. Same description of her person as well. Same area. Where she apparently went missing was right near Interstate 695. The park where this all happened was right off of I-695 too, just a bit further from where she apparently went missing. I'm 95% sure it's her, that 5% is just a so hopes don't get up, but the face in the picture is the same face of the woman I saw in that unfortunate circumstance. Even the eyes.... I have a thing where I seem to always remember a persons eyes, and those eyes...

This is my first post here on unresolvedmysteries, sorry if I'm breaking any rules, but how should I go about putting this information through to a trustworthy source?.... I know reddit is great with solving mysteries and such and this all has brought back the memory strong.... Any other information wanted or needed let me know, please. I'd love to be able to help especially being she's still missing and I know what I saw that day and based on her photos who I saw.... It was the same woman..."

Investigators on Thursday applied orange chalk to the driveway of the yellow house on Clarke Boulevard where Rust lived with her family when she went missing on July 20, 2002, the day of her 3-year-old son’s birthday party. Police said they plan to search the house next door, where Rust’s father-in-law and mother-in-law lived at the time, as well as other undisclosed locations in Baltimore County and Baltimore City.

Police used ground-penetrating radar to look for “any disturbances in the ground” around the house, Cpl. Dona Carter of the Criminal Investigations Unit said Thursday. Detectives appeared to focus on searching for evidence in the home’s backyard, which was surrounded by a white fence.

Carter did not say if new evidence had come to light, more than 20 years after police began investigating Rust’s disappearance. “As with any cold case we have, especially as new detectives come to the unit, we make sure we review any information, any new leads obtained,” Carter said.

Police have long suspected foul play in Rust’s disappearance. They found no activity on her financial accounts and the clothes and jewelry she was wearing that day were never found. Her green Dodge Caravan was discovered close to her home, Carter said. Relatives said Rust would not have left her son willingly.

In 2002, Rust’s parents Ray and Gwen Lins told The Baltimore Sun they would never stop searching for their daughter. The Lins have been ruled out as suspects, Carter said Thursday. Michelle’s husband Dwight Rust said in 2003 that he had nothing to do with her disappearance.

"As time went on, nobody heard from her," said Cpl Dona Carter, from the Criminal Investigations Bureau. "There was no activity on her bank accounts, no checks written. She was a dedicated mother, dedicated daughter to her family. She wouldn't have just disappeared so it was pretty evident that she was the victim of foul play."

Investigators returned to the 1800 block of Clark Boulevard using ground penetrating radar to find any leads to provide answers to Rust's disappearance.

"So it looks for any disturbances under the ground for any evidence that might be there, or might not be there, but that's what we're looking for, any evidence that led to her disappearance," Carter said.

Initial suspicions suggested Rust went to the store to purchase supplies, but witness interviews revealed that no one saw her leave her Arbutus home, nor drive her vehicle. Police said her green 1998 Dodge Caravan, was later found on Clyde Avenue in Lansdowne.

"A short time later, her green Dodge van was found a short distance from here, but as I said, there has been no information related to her disappearance and no one has heard from her to this day," Carter said.

Details of Disappearance

Michelle was last seen at her home on Clark Boulevard in Halethorpe, Maryland at 9:30 a.m. on July 20, 2002. She was going to drive her dark green 1998 Dodge Caravan to buy some items for her three-year-old son's birthday party at local stores.
Michelle never returned home. Her car was found abandoned at 11:00 a.m. that same day, parked in front of a row of houses on Zion Avenue near the corner of Clyde Avenue and an entrance to Hillcrest Park, in the nearby residential community of Lansdowne.
The entry key was broken off in the driver's door keyhole, and the rest of the keychain was missing. There was no sign of Michelle at the scene. A photograph of her vehicle is posted with this case summary.
Authorities initially thought Michelle had disappeared while shopping for the party, but now they think she may have never voluntarily left her house that day. Her parents think she is dead and believe she was abducted before reaching the end of the street, and possibly before leaving her residence.
Her husband, Dwight "D. J." Rust, says he saw her car rounding a bend in the street the day she disappeared, but no one saw Michelle leave and even Dwight did not actually see his wife inside her car.
Michelle took none of her personal belongings when she vanished, and there has been no activity on her bank accounts since her disappearance. Her credit cards disappeared with her, but have not been used since she vanished. She was missed about an hour after she was last seen, when Dwight became concerned because she had not returned from the store and no one reported having seen her since she left.
Michelle had purple polish on her nails at the time of her disappearance, and may have been carrying a black backpack containing her insulin kit. She is a graduate of Lansdowne High School and has always lived in the Halethorpe area.
She had worked at a children's day-care facility before becoming a stay-at-home mother. Her family says it is extremely uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning. Authorities have not ruled Dwight out as a suspect, but they have not ruled anyone else out either, except Michelle's parents.
Dwight was the last person to see his wife before she vanished. He had reportedly had several extramarital affairs and Michelle was afraid that one of his girlfriends might hurt her. Dwight, who began dating Michelle when she was a freshman in high school and married her in 1997, maintains his innocence in his wife's disappearance and states he does not believe she left of her own free will. He filed for divorce from Michelle in 2007 and sought custody of their son.
Michelle remains missing and her case is unsolved. Her disappearance is being investigated as a kidnapping by the FBI and foul play is suspected. Some agencies state Michelle disappeared from Baltimore, Maryland.
