Baltimore Police along with assistance from an FBI taskforce have closed down the 3400 block of North Franklintown Road near Leakin Park to search for Phylicia Barnes after receiving a tip.

Authorities served warrants Monday night and searched the apartment where the teen was last seen. Police also searched a part of Leakin Park Tuesday morning on a tip, but came up empty.

16-year-old Phylicia Barnes, missing in Baltimore since last week, was not on a flight she was scheduled to take back to her home in North Carolina this morning, and police now suspect that foul play may have been involved and Barnes may have been abducted.

Monday morning, Baltimore City Police Commissioner Bealefeld ordered that Phylicia's case be transferred to the homicide section which investigates all cases of possible abduction.

The FBI’s Crimes Against Children unit is involved at the request of Baltimore’s police commissioner, Fred Bealefeld. About 25 homicide detectives from the Baltimore Police Department are also on the case.
Police are now searching Leakin Park based on a tip from an Internet source. The search began at 9 a.m. Tuesday and will continue for several hours more. Dive teams, the entire academy class and the canine unit are on the scene.

and another snip~

Baltimore City Police served a search warrant at the apartment of the missing teen’s sister on Eberle Drive in Northwest Baltimore. It’s not clear what they were looking for, but they said they found no outstanding evidence. They say Phylicia Barnes’ sister is being cooperative with their investigation. Police also served six other search warrants, but would not say where those locations are.

Her poor mom...how many times have we heard parents mention human trafficking...as a possible outcome where their child could be alive...Amber's mom was saying that right up until Amber was found...

I wonder what kind of internet tip LE is following...

An elite FBI team set up to find missing and exploited children has joined Baltimore police in the search for a teenager who disappeared last month, even as detectives search Leakin Park based on a tip from an Internet posting, according to authorities involved in the investigation.

As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, investigators were scouring the woods along the 4000 block of Franklintown Road after reading an online comment posted on a Baltimore Sun story about the missing 16-year-old girl.

It read: "Humor me, somebody pop over to the 4000 block of Franklintown Road and look at the Southward shoulder."

Wow what a weird post...if someone saw something off the shoulder why didn't they look or report it the regular way?

It has long been known that B'more has a human trafficking issue:

I agree... and here in DC the whole sex industry in HUGE.

Like her mom wants to believe, I think this may be the best option right now to hope for, as it means she may still be alive and can return home. However, I don't feel in my gut that this is the case... :(

I'm extremely worried that the worst has happened to Phylicia. There are too many circumstances surrounding her disappearance - with the way the apartment was described, people coming/going, drugs, etc.

Barnes’ mother, Janice Sallis, said her daughter had connected with her half-sisters through Facebook. Eventually, she decided to allow her to take a trip to Baltimore to visit.
“Before she was allowed to go there, I questioned her sister, Deena Barnes, who is 28 years old. ‘How was her environment?’ She said, ‘It’s just going to be me and Phylicia because my boyfriend and I, we broke up and he would be officially moved out by Jan. 1,’” Sallis said.

Oh my, so the half-sisters did not even know one another? Only by FB?

Police said Barnes' stepsister has been extremely cooperative and that detectives have an extremely lengthy list of individuals who were in the apartment. All of those individuals have been interviewed by homicide detectives.

eta: this article has a great recap of the presser that was held today at 2pm

in the wsoc link I posted there is an interview with the mother... reporter says that at the mother's urging the two re connected two years ago over face book and that Phylicia has been there to visit before.

Also, it was stated that her mother calls her by her middle name, simone.

Deena Barnes misled me," Sallis said. "I'm a very protective mother. She assured me it would be just she and Phylicia.

"But when I went up there Thursday night, I found out otherwise. She gave me the names of 20 different guys who had gone in and out of the apartment."

Anthony Gugliemi, a spokesman for the Baltimore police, said investigators are looking into the possibility that the girl was abducted, and possibly taken out of state.

"We are enormously concerned," Baltimore police Commissioner Frederick Bealefield III told reporters Monday.

OMG... My mind is going places that I don't want it to with that statement.

On Monday, Baltimore police asked homicide detectives to join the investigation.
There was a flurry of activity late Tuesday morning after a reader posted a note on the Baltimore Sun's website, saying, "Humor me. Somebody pop over to the 4000 block of Franklintown Road and look at the Southward shoulder."
Police searched the area, near Leaken Park, but found nothing.
Baltimore police also confirmed they searched the apartment of Deena Barnes, Phylicia's 27-year-old half-sister. That came after Sallis told police Deena Barnes told her a number of men had come in and out of the residence. But a police spokesman said it appears the search turned up nothing.

<snip>

Police say, so far, seven search warrants have been executed in the investigation. However, police say that nothing of significance to the case has been found in any of the search and seizure warrants.

Guglielmi said the homicide unit is "double-crossing the T's and dotting the I's" in this investigation.

"We're going over every shred of evidence that we already have, we're re-interviewing everybody we've interviewed, just to make sure we didn't miss anything," Guglielmi said. "Now, with the help of the FBI, we're going to get some first-class technical assistance, as far as talking to the people who have last seen Phylicia, also looking at her Facebook account and going through the computer part of this with a fine-tooth comb."

Police say one warrant was for the residence which belongs to Barnes' stepsister.

I bet you that tip was to throw off LE.

This is terrible. I feel so bad for Janice--she has been betrayed, lied to. I am appalled, like Janice, that Deena allowed that behavior/those people in her house while her vulnerable sister was staying there. Twenty men in one weekend? WTH?

Major kudos to Janice, Phylicia's other family members, and the slue of friends and community members for getting her picture and name out in the community and in the media. I am VERY surprised at how much media attention she is getting, even on a local level---it's wonderful.

Another kudos to Baltimore Police who appear to be working hard and doing a great job on this case. Glad to see the FBI is involved as well.

G-d I hope she is alive, but it is not looking too good.

I don't understand why her sister would have that many people in and out if she had promised it would be just the two of them. Not to mention, I am hard pressed to think of any 20 men I've ever know, in my much longer than 27 years of life...scary.

Or this is an area the person that has her can visually see and is tormenting her. The police should go back there and look up and around to see who or what they can see and check out those buildings.

Just another Marylander poking in on a local case...I've substituted recently in that area and I would say I feel safer in parts of the city than over in Pikesville! Between actually going to HS with Debbie Flores (and being in a class with her) and recently being over there working I'm starting to think I should get out of MD soon!

I do want to say that while Baltimore does have a horrible reputation it really isn't any worse than anywhere else. There are a lot of wonderful people and things to experience here, its just between Baltimore, Annapolis and DC the bad shadows the good.

I'm still thrown off by the whole shelter scenario. I guess I'll just chalk that up to our amazing police force. Look up the Annie McCann case ( http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/crime/blog/annie_mccann/ ) if you really want to get frustrated.
