I think a lot of statements get taken out of context or heavily scrutinized when maybe they were just guesses or ideas by family or were re-worded or hypothesized by reporters whether they meant to do that or not. Not saying anyone’s innocent or guilty, but I don’t think it’s crazy that she could have been wearing flip flops. Maybe her regular shoes were present so it was just a guess, but people don’t always know everyone’s entire wardrobe. Flip flops are a dime a dozen, so they may just assume she could have left in them if it was typical for her to wear them.
It’s been a bit rainy the last couple of days, but it hasn’t been THAT cold. I grew up in Maine and still come here all the time to visit relatives. I still wear flip flops all the time this time if year and even later - many people do - and I’ve never owned rain boots in my life. I owned one pair of Bean boots when I was 5. Flip flops are easy to slip on and honestly I’m not ready to give up on summer for 6 months of wintery weather. :/
Empty room to me means spare room, and in my family, moving to another room in the middle of the night is not unusual. Even if it was empty, if they were renovating the whole house, that is still not off to me. Maybe her husband snores.
Some people definitely leave doors unlocked here. I guess some people do everywhere.
Cell reception can still be awful in some places, including around the mid coast area, especially depending on carrier/technology. I used to sell cell phones not far from there and this certainly was the case.
Maine is very friendly and neighbor-oriented. If the husband knew people at the fire station, it definitely would not be odd for him to go there first. Calling 911 can be daunting, in my opinion. If you’re not really sure if someone’s “missing” missing at first, I could see going to a local station.
This is very similar to another Maine case of a young man who was reported missing from the Portland area for months back around 2005, but nothing ever came of it. He is not on Maine’s missing person registry in the .gov website either, but all of the contacts are emergency contacts, so not sure how to ask about that. Anyway, I am sure it’s not related, but it’s odd.
