"I believe that there is one killer that is haunting Long Island, and I believe there is a really good chance he is a seasonal visitor," said Dr. Scott A. Bonn, a serial killer expert and assistant professor of sociology at Drew University.”

"[The killer] is intimately familiar with the area and comfortable with it. I think there is a very good chance that he grew up in the area," Bonn added.”

The following quote fr/ the above link was posted in the “Shannan Gilbert Found...” thread on 2.23.12:

"Bonn also believes Gilbert is likely linked to the other victims.”

"[Authorities] seem to dismiss Gilbert as one of the victims, and that does not make sense to me," Bonn said. "Unless there is evidence we don't know about, it seems too eerily similar to dismiss."

"Investigators say digital forensics work was key to tracking down the suspect, according to Jake Wark, press secretary for the Suffolk County, Mass., district attorney's office."

"The technology involved was absolutely crucial in identifying the suspect," said Wark in an interview with Computerworld. "The investigation led to the recovery of an abundance of cellular, wireless and other electronic evidence."

"He added that investigators from the Boston police homicide unit were able to link the IP address that was used to send an e-mail setting up the April 14 date with the murder victim to Markoff's home address."

"Stingrays are designed to locate a mobile phone even when it's not being used to make a call. The Federal Bureau of Investigation considers the devices to be so critical that it has a policy of deleting the data gathered in their use, mainly to keep suspects in the dark about their capabilities, an FBI official told The Wall Street Journal in response to inquiries."

Prepaid cell phones or “burn phones” utilize the same networks as contract phones. So, the brand and model of the cell and the service provider the device is working through determine which network the phone uses. Some prepaid cell phone companies offer access to both networks. Here are some examples:

"T-Mobile's To Go Phone also provides national coverage through their GSM network. Out of network calls are not permitted."

"Tracfone has been around for some time, and provides nationwide coverage primarily through their own network, but provides roaming through partnerships with 30 CDMA and GSM networks. Roaming is free on select GSM handsets. CDMA phones and other GSM handsets are charged double the minutes used."

"Net 10 is a sister network to Tracfone, and offers virtually the same network coverage and service plans. Free roaming is provided on both CDMA and GSM networks."

A Serial Killer in Common
By Robert Kolker
Published May 29, 2011
http://nymag.com/news/features/long-...milies-2011-6/

“The weekend she disappeared, Maureen had taken the train into the city with friends, but she left them once she got to Manhattan. Cann says her sister usually worked from a hotel room and never saw johns at their places. Maureen was adamant about working only in Manhattan and never said anything to Cann about working in Long Island. At one point that weekend, Maureen called a friend from the Port Authority and said she’d been robbed of all the money she’d earned. She needed a ride home, but the friend couldn’t come get her. After that call, no one heard from Maureen again. For three years, the NYPD had reported no trace of her—except, in 2008, for one cell-phone-signal ping off a Long Island tower, just a few miles from Gilgo Beach. “Someone was trying to access Maureen’s cell-phone voice-mail,” Cann says. When she saw the news about Gilgo Beach, Cann knew Maureen had to be one of the bodies.”

"Dr Alistair Pike in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology tells how tiny samples of tooth enamel proved the identity of a Saxon queen."

"Teeth provide remarkable evidence about the early years of an individual’s life. The region where a person grew up can be traced in the tooth enamel laid down in their first 14 years because strontium and oxygen isotope ratios in the teeth reflect the food a person ate and the water they drank."

Isotopes in Hair and Teeth Are Permanent Records of Geography

"James R. Ehleringer, Gabriel J. Bowen, Lesley A. Chesson, Adam G. West, David W. Podlesak, and Thure E. Cerling have published their findings in the February 25, 2008 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Stable isotopes are absorbed permanently into hair and teeth from water we drink, food we eat, and air we breathe. Scientists can analyze those isotopes and compare them with isotope maps of the continental states to determine where the person has traveled. Depending on the length of the hair, travel locations can be identified for years past."

She is described as “non-caucasian.” The link was made through DNA analysis, Dormer said."

America’s Serial Killer and the rise of online prostitution
February 14th, 2012
by Emma Slater

Long Island, New York. It is the most densely populated island in the US, and is long renowned for its affluence. For many, it is a place to escape the melee of the city that never sleeps – somewhere to relax, to spend time on the golf course or at one of the island’s 30 wineries.

But in December 2010, the peace was shattered. Seven months earlier, a woman had gone missing from a gated community in Jones Beach, Suffolk county, on the southern part of the Island. 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert was a sex worker, who advertised on the website Craigslist. That night, she had travelled out to the Island to meet a client. But after the meeting, something happened which made her run off into nearby marshland.

On December 11, a Suffolk county police officer was searching the sand dunes with a cadaver dog, when they came across the remains of a woman.

Later that day, as the authorities continued their search of the area, they found three more bodies. Over the following months, a total of 11 bodies, including Shannan’s, were found along this desolate stretch of beach. Five of the dead were sex workers who advertised online. The killer is still at large.

(03/13/12) MANORVILLE - Suffolk police are out searching the wooded area of Manorville where skeletal remains were discovered last month.

A man walking his dog stumbled upon the remains, which included a skull, back on Feb. 17. Police say they believe the bones had been there for at least five years.

The latest remains were found just a few miles from where two other sets of remains were found in 2000 and 2003. Both of those cases were later linked to the Ocean Parkway murders.

Police have not said if the newest discovery is also connected. They say nothing new in the case triggered today's search; they had just been waiting until they had enough resources available to conduct the operation.

"My opinion is that it's very unlikely that it's one person," Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said during an interview at Yaphank headquarters. That view is at odds with a single-killer theory that was aired last December by then-Police Commissioner Richard Dormer, setting off an unusual public argument with District Attorney Thomas Spota, who also believes there were multiple killers.

"Dungfelder decided to act when Melissa Cann of Groton, his close friend and executive advertising director, lost her sister, Maureen Brainard-Barnes of Norwich. Police suspect that she was a victim of the Long Island serial killer.”

Serial Killings or Not? Police Can't
Figure it Out
by Chelsea Hoffman

“Is the Long Island Serial Killer real or could the slayings of several women in the region the work of several people? The new head of the Suffolk Police seems to think that multiple killers are responsible, contradicting the last theory of a predator who stalks victims for hobby. It seems odd that the law enforcement in this area can't seem to come up with a theory and stick to it, while seemingly refusing to acknowledge the need for FBI assistance.”
