DREW PETERSON ARREST
Drew Peterson: Ex-cop arrested on murder charges in '04 death of third wife
New chapter in case of former cop Drew Peterson, whose 3rd wife, Kathleen Savio, drowned in '04 and whose 4th wife, Stacy Peterson, has been missing since '07
May 8, 2009
<snipped>
Drew Peterson, whose third wife died mysteriously and fourth wife vanished, had taunted authorities to come and get him -- when he wasn't clowning for the cameras. On Thursday, they came for him.

"We're ecstatic," Savio's brother, Henry, said. "We're really happy. Drew's arrested, and we're really happy.

"I think my sister is smiling and saying, 'Good, it's about time. It's about time.' "

The rush of relief carried over to Stacy Peterson's family, the couple's neighborhood and everywhere else where people were offended by the ex-cop's flaunting of his freedom with absurd stunts involving dating contests, Nevada brothels and TV appearances with his new 24-year-old girlfriend.

Peterson didn't speak in court except to tell the judge he understood the continuance.

But the 55-year-old was cracking jokes when he arrived.

Wearing a red jail jumpsuit, Peterson was brought in handcuffed and shackled around the legs. He told reporters he was getting "three squares a day" and joked about his "spiffy outfit" and "bling."

Drew Peterson will have to wait more than a week to answer allegations he drowned his third wife in a bath tub.

A judge continued the former police sergeant's arraignment to May 18 because neither of Peterson's attorneys were at Friday's hearing.

Cassandra Cales -- the sister of Peterson's missing fourth wife -- was in the courtroom.

"It made me feel good to see him chained up like the dog that he is," she said outside the courthouse. "I'm happy that Kathy's family has gotten justice for Kathleen Savio."

She said she plans to contact Drew's oldest son Stephen about the children. She also plans to contact an attorney about her visitation rights. She said the last time she saw her nephews was a year ago.

She's hopeful people who have information about her sister's disappearance will step forward now "that they know he's locked up."

Asked if the arrest gives her any sense of closure, she said "closure is bringing my sister home and getting her the justice she deserves."

Peterson Goes To Court In Savio Murder
$20 Million Bail Set After Thursday Arrest
May 8, 2009

Peterson, 55, appeared for an arraignment at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet in the early afternoon. The hearing was continued until May 18, and Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow said he expected Peterson's defense to ask for a change of venue.

He arrived at the courthouse at 1:05 p.m., in one of a fleet of transport vans that pulled out of a door in the Will County Jail and traveled a short distance down a ramp to the courthouse.

Peterson then exited through the back of the van, flanked by two correctional officers. He was in bound shackles, and was wearing a red jail jumpsuit. He looked up at a line of camera crews on the ledge above as the correctional officers led him into the courthouse building.

JOLIET, Ill. (Associated Press) -- Drew Peterson's third wife will have a chance to "testify from the grave" under an Illinois law passed amid the media frenzy over his missing fourth wife, but some say prosecutors could be on shaky legal ground if they plan to build their murder case around that testimony. Peterson appeared in court Friday, the day after he was charged with killing Kathleen Savio, his third wife who was found dead in a dry bathtub in 2004 with a gash on the back of her head.

And as CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports, relatives of both women showed up Friday to see Peterson in court.

Savio's niece Melissa Doman was among them.
"It is so satisfying to see him where he should have been five years ago," Doman said.

"He was taking this to the limelight," Savio's nephew Charlie Doman said, "reality shows… He missed a trip to the Bunny Ranch, but, you know, he was trying to become a movie star. Movie star's going to do 60 years."

Cassandra Cales, Stacy Peterson's sister, hopes the Savio case will open the door to leads in her sister's disappearance.

"Maybe somebody'll come forward, and I'm hoping that they do," Cales said. "If Drew Peterson had help with what he did to my sister I hope that they come forward now that they know that he's locked up and can't harm them.

He has six kids, and over the years some of them have shown up in interviews with their father. Four were living with Peterson at his Bolingbrook home.
Drew Peterson's oldest son, Stephen Peterson, said Friday the kids are fine and that everyone is doing OK.

Neighbors say he is staying at his father's house with all four children.

According to state police, Drew Peterson asked authorities to give his oldest son custody of his three half-brothers and his half-sister.
Drew Peterson has six children. The two by his first wife are adults: Stephen, who is a police officer in Oak Brook and his brother, Eric, who lives in the western suburbs.

Sister Vows Justice For Stacy Peterson
May 8, 2009 6:29 pm US/Central
<snipped>
Stacy Peterson's only sister, Cassandra Cales, was in court Friday when the former Bolingbrook cop turned accused killer entered the courtroom in shackles.
"It made me feel good to see him chained up like the dog that he is," Cales said.

And although Cales is pleased that Peterson is accused of murdering Savio, she says she won't rest until her sister's killer stands accused as well.

"I'll seek justice for my sister… it doesn't stop here," she said.

Sources close to the investigation say the probe into Stacy's disappearance is progressing and possibly could result in homicide indictments against Peterson in connection with her disappearance and presumed death.

Cales says she long ago accepted that her sister would never be coming home alive. But she says she won't accept her not being found.

"I'm not experienced with polygraphs at all," Peterson told Dateline NBC's Hoda Kotb. "I was answering truthfully."

Drew's Defense
May 9, 2009

"I think we're going to look for a jury outside of Northern Illinois, that goes without saying," said Brodsky, adding "I believe an unbiased jury is going to clearly see that these charges are unfounded and the evidence is, at best, weak, circumstantial, and based on rumor."

Additionally, the attorney is strongly opposed to a recent law allowing certain third party statements, which previously would have likely been classified as hearsay, to be submitted into evidence and he confidently believes he is not the only lawyer who opposes this new law.
"It's a horrible law. Not only is it constitutionally problematic but just in general it allows so much rumor, innuendo, backyard gossip into a court of law where it doesn't belong. We believe we are going to be challenging that law."

Will County States Attorney James Glasgow views the ability to utilize select third party statements in a substantially different light and is likely going to use this new law to his advantage.
"In essence what you're basically allowing the victim of a violent crime to do is to testify from the grave," Glasgow said at a press briefing Thursday evening. Glasgow also clarified that the usage of these statements in court also comes with "very serious protections for the defendant's rights."

Drew Peterson's attorney wants bond reduced

updated 2 hours, 29 minutes ago
CHICAGO - Drew Peterson's lead attorney said he'll ask a judge to sharply reduce the former suburban Chicago police officer's bond from the current $20 million to "a reasonable level."

Joel Brodsky said at a news conference Sunday that a bond between $500,000 and $1 million would be within the range set in other murder cases in Will County.

"We are ... going to attempt to get this excessive bond down to a reasonable level and see that Drew is given the same bond as anybody who's accused of a similar crime," Brodsky said.

Peterson remains jailed on charges of first-degree murder in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Peterson is a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy.

If the bond is reduced to $500,000, Brodsky said he thinks Peterson would be able to pay it. Peterson would have to post 10 percent to go free while he awaits trial.

'Doing fine in jail'
Speaking from a baggage claim area at O'Hare International Airport, Brodsky said he's been in contact with Peterson, who he described as "doing fine in jail."

Peterson, arrested Thursday, is being held in segregation at the Will County Adult Detention Facility in Joliet, both because he's a former Bolingbrook police officer and because his case is high-profile, Brodsky said.

And given the case's high profile, he said he'll likely ask the judge to move the case out of Will County or to seat a jury from outside of northern Illinois.

He said he hasn't made the decision yet because trying the case among people who know Peterson has its advantages.

"On one hand, Drew has been serving the citizens of Will County for 30 years, he's been a part of the thin blue line that's kept them safe, and he's certainly a well-known member of the community," Brodsky said. "On the other hand, obviously we have to worry about all the tremendous amount of negative publicity that's been given to him."

Peterson is next due in court May 18.

Attorney Hopes To Get Peterson's Bond Reduced
May 11, 2009 5:42 am US/Central
<snipped>
Brodsky maintains reasonable bond would be about $500,000. If bond is reduced, Brodsky says he thinks Peterson could raise the money.

In addition to the bond issue, he also told CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli he plans to challenge a new evidence law.

Many people have taken to calling that law the "Drew Peterson law" because they believe it was specifically drafted to allow the words of Kathleen Savio to be used against Drew Peterson in a court of law, even if they're not able to do so in person themselves.

"It's just simply a bad law," Brodsky said. "It allows rumor, backyard gossip and innuendo come into a court of law masquerading as evidence."

Lisa Stebic Relatives Remember Missing Mom
Family Members Hope Drew Peterson Case Helps Their Cause

The arrest of Drew Peterson in the 2004 homicide of Kathleen Savio is giving hope to another family.

The loved ones of Lisa Stebic think it could lead to new developments in the case of the missing mother.

Stebic disappeared from her Plainfield home on April 30, 2007. Her estranged husband, Craig Stebic, has been named a person of interest in the case, but he denies any involvement and has not been charged with any crime.

CBS 2's Pamela Jones talked with Lisa's family about how the Peterson case could make a difference to the Stebic investigation.
Lisa Stebic's family is wishing prosecutors in the Savio case the best of luck. They'll be watching to see how this all plays out.

The now-jailed Drew Peterson has the support of his children, according to statement his publicist released today from Peterson's eldest son Steve Peterson.

"All of the children of Drew Peterson fully support their father and know that he is innocent of the charges against him," the statement said. "We know him better than anyone else in the world, and we know he is not guilty.
"My younger brothers and sister, Chris, Tom, Anthony and Lacy, are staying with me. We miss our dad and are praying for his release every day."

Prosecutor 'really doesn't have a case,' Drew Peterson's lawyer contends
May 11, 2009

The case is "not just hearsay, but double hearsay," Brodsky said.

He was referring to statements purportedly made by Savio, Peterson's third wife, about his threats, and comments allegedly made by Stacy, his missing fourth wife, to a pastor.

Peterson has been cracking wise since his arrest about jailhouse food and "bling" (handcuffs.)

It's a defense mechanism, Brodsky said.

"Drew does not think this situation he's in is funny," he said. "His comments certainly don't help. ... I've discussed that with Drew."

The case against Drew Peterson: Testimony from 'beyond the grave'
STRATEGY | Prosecutors plan to use 'hearsay' statements from murdered wife
May 9, 2009
<snipped>
A new state law enacted last year with the support of Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow makes it easier to use "hearsay'' statements from victims who were allegedly killed to prevent them from testifying against their attackers.

"You're letting someone testify from beyond the grave,'' Glasgow said of the law enacted last November, which was referred to informally in Springfield as the "Drew Peterson bill'' because of its ties to the high-profile case.

The statements of Savio and Stacy Peterson may be critical -- though some legal experts question the constitutionality of the new law -- because authorities apparently have little physical or forensic evidence tying Peterson to his third wife's death.

Building a Case Against Drew Peterson
Dislike for Drew Peterson Is One Thing, but is There Enough Evidence Against Him?
May 11, 2009
<snipped>
While the allegations against Peterson and his seemingly blase attitude toward the fate of his two wives have made him an unpopular media figure, prosecutors face the burden of convincing a jury he's guilty using evidence that's reportedly circumstantial at this point.

Prosectors are hoping they can enter into evidence writings from Savio when she was in the midst of her divorce from Peterson, that she feared her husband's "next step is to take my children away or kill me."
