Just on the news an noon...

"A sealed container was found in San Joaquin County, and investigators haven't ruled out the possibility that it could be related to the disappearance of Sandra Cantu."

FBI etc on their way out to investigate right now.

A farming operation found the container Monday morning while draining an irrigation ditch by Bacchetti Road.

Tracy police spokesman Sgt. Tony Sheneman said he doesn't know how big the container is, but he noted it's unusual for a container to show up in an irrigation ditch.

Tracy Police Sgt. Tony Sheneman said the container was found at around 11:40 a.m. by farm workers in an irrigation pond located near Tracy Blvd. and Bacchetti Rd – a pond that searchers had already covered. The workers spotted the container while they were emptying the pond to irrigate a nearby field.

Investigators aren't saying whether or not they think the container holds Cantu, or evidence in her disappearance.

Sheneman told ABC7 News no one has opened the container; they are waiting for evidence technicians to arrive. At this point, he said, investigators do not know whether the container is related to the search for the missing girl. Sheneman did say it was found in an area that had been recently searched, except at that time the drainage pond was full of water.

The pond, at the end of Buchetti Road, was being routinely drained.

A mobile command unit has been set up, but authorities will not confirm or deny that the discovery is related to the case of Sandra Cantu, the 8-year-old missing from her Tracy mobile home community since the evening of March 27.

(snip)
Tracy police and the FBI are investigating a black container found on farmland just two miles from the mobile home park where missing eight-year-old Sandra Cantu was last seen.

Police tell KRON 4’s Maureen Kelly that around 10 a.m. Monday a farmer discovered a black container in an irrigation pool on his property, located on North Tracy Boulevard north of Sugar Road.

The road has been shut down and the CHP is clearing air space over the area.

The container has not been opened yet, officials are waiting for the evidence trailer to arrive.

Earlier Monday, police had called an end to the large-scale ground operations.

from the article..."At Monday afternoon's media update, Sheneman read a statement from Maria Chavez, Cantu's mother. In it, Chavez said Lisa Encarnacion is no longer a representative for the family, and she thanked Encarnacion and Tracy police for their work."

Not sure if this has been linked before, but it is an editorial written yesterday about how tightly knit Tracy is and how much everyone was doing all that they can to help poor Sandra.

So very sad to read this after what we learned tonight. But still, kudos to this community for all that they did to try and help this little girl. I have a feeling that the perp will be caught very very soon....
