Missing Tracy girl believed to be slaying victim

Updated: 04/06/2009 09:46:40 PM PDTTRACY — Police confirmed tonight that the body of a missing Tracy girl was found inside a large black container discovered in a farm pond just 2 miles away from where the child was last seen 10 days ago.
Sandra Cantu, 8, was last seen in a surveillance video that captured her skipping near her home in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park on West Clover Road on March 27.
"We will be determining the person responsible for this reprehensive act, and we will bring them to justice," said Tracy Police Chief Janet Thiessen said at a Monday night press conference, reading from a prepared statement.
A cause of death will be determined after an autopsy, which is scheduled to take place "first thing" Tuesday morning, said Tracy Police Sgt. Tony Sheneman. He said she was identified by the clothing she was last seen wearing, a Hello Kitty T-shirt and striped dress.Farm workers draining the pond in preparation to irrigate a nearby field made the discovery Monday morning. After police and FBI agents spent the day at the site taking photos of footprints and tire tracks and looking for other evidence, a coroner's van arrived at about 3 p.m.
Sandra's body was found inside a black rolling suitcase. The case didn't have any identifying marks that "would lead us to a particular individual," Sheneman said. Officials said the area nearby had been extensively searched; however, the "very large collection pond" — which had been full for two weeks — hadn't been dredged. more at link:http://www.contracostatimes.com/top-stories/ci_12083949

Child *advertiser censored* Traffickers Cited in Missing Child Search
Apr-06-2009 11:38
Salem-News.com
In a precedent that could have a major impact nationwide, California police say they are looking at known child *advertiser censored* traffickers in a missing child case.
(TRACY, Calif.) - Police in Tracy, California, a city of 80,000 just east of San Francisco, are searching for an 8 year-old child, Sandra Cantu, who disappeared March 27th.
Now, according to the Tracy Press, investigators in the case say they are looking at 60 individuals in the Tracy area who have been identified trafficking in child *advertiser censored*, along with 78 "registered" sex offenders.
It is believed to be the first time in the U.S. that police have publicly acknowledged the huge population of known but not arrested child *advertiser censored* suspects in a missing child case. more at link:

Some new information (at least to me):
Sandra's body was found in a drainage irrigation pond about 2 miles north of her home in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park. The area had been searched twice previously, police said, but the pond had been full of water.
Workers doing routine draining at 10 a.m. saw the container and called police. Local officers and FBI agents swarmed the area surrounding Bacchetti Road northeast of the city.
Police searched every residence in the mobile home park and questioned drivers and searched car trunks at the neighborhood's entrance. Sixteen regional law enforcement agencies, Tracy police and the FBI were involved in the search. On Monday, at least 25 law enforcement officers spent the day at the scene collecting potential evidence. A coroner's van arrived about 3 p.m.
It's believed that the container was not in the pond when it was last drained, about two weeks ago. When workers noticed it, they thought it was suspicious and called police after pulling it over to the side of an embankment. more at link: http://www.mercurynews.com/topstories/ci_12083966

Update:
At 10:20 p.m., an estimated 16 Tracy police and FBI vehicles, including a crime lab, were seen entering the mobile home park, in preparation to serve search warrants at an undisclosed location inside.
A short while later, Tracy police and FBI agents converged on Clover Road Baptist Church near the mobile home park late Monday night preparing to search a shed in connection with the investigation into Sandra's death, calling it an "active crime scene."
As news of Sandra's death spread quickly, at least 100 people gathered outside the park at a makeshift memorial, some of them crying.

More info:
The suitcase was found by farmworkers at about 10 a.m. as they were draining the pond at a dairy farm on Bacchetti Road in Tracy. Witnesses told investigators it was not there when they drained the same pond about two weeks ago.
The pond sits amid rows of irrigation ditches about 2 miles north of Sandra's home.
Tracy Police Sgt. Tony Sheneman said investigators immediately had strong suspicions about the container found Monday because it was in such a remote area, was so large, and just showed up.
"We're out in the middle of nowhere looking at this scene," he said Monday evening before the chief's announcement. "It would be very unusual for someone to just chuck something that big out here."
After the suitcase was found, investigators combed over the area, looking for "trace evidence everywhere," he said.

Heartbreak in Tracy

I read Sandra's mother had to be hospitalized.
"We can't talk right now," grandfather Jose Chavez said, the sound of crying relatives in the background.
Among the onlookers on Tracy Boulevard was Daniel Cantu, Sandra's estranged father.
The 37-year-old, wearing a black T-shirt with Sandra's face on it, stood among a throng of reporters, waiting for news and viewing the scene with binoculars.
"I don't know who or what would have the audacity to do something like this," Cantu said as he waited for news. "I'm hoping that she's alive and well."

okay, just kidding.....one more thing to add here. If you do a Google search for the church's address (11000 W. Clover Rd Tracy, CA) you can see it in street view. there's a long rancho style building and a smaller building -- possibly the shed in question? if it wasn't 1:30 AM, i'd do a screen capture.....

When Sandra arrived home - around 4 p.m., according to a surveillance camera attached to her house - she talked about going to CHURCH and a movie with her two older sisters, her grandfather said.
When the girls realized they didn't have enough money to go to a movie, Sandra left again to play, Chavez said.

Tracy church a crime scene in girl’s slaying (9:57 a.m.)

By The Record
April 07, 2009 12:58 PM

TRACY -- The Police Department, shifting gears from trying to find Sandra Cantu to trying to find her killer, has roped off Clover Road Baptist Church with yellow crime-scene tape.

The church is less than 100 yards west of Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park, where Cantu lived. The 8-year-old girl’s body was discovered Monday inside a suitcase floating in an irrigation pond two miles north of her home.

A residence inside the mobile-home park also has been roped off as a crime scene.

Teachers and psychologists were brought in today to Sandra Cantu's elementary school to help saddened students and staff cope with the death of the 8-year-old.
At Jacobson Elementary School, a 660-student kindergarten-through-fifth-grade campus on the city's south side, substitute teachers were filling in for teachers who didn't feel up to working.
"We do have a number of teachers out today because of the situation - especially teachers who were close to Sandra or her family," said district spokeswoman Jessica Cardoza. "Everyone who knew Sandra said she was vibrant and happy. I know that every student at Jacobson knew Sandra and loved Sandra."
The little girl has an older sibling who attends Jacobson. On Tuesday, teachers, district psychologists and the school's counselors talked with all the students about the second-grader's death.
"We have seven psychologists at Jacobson Elementary and extra psychologists at other school sites," said Jessica Cardoza.

While visiting the homes of "registered" sex offenders is common in missing children cases, the public is mostly unaware that U.S. law enforcement has also identified hundreds of thousands of criminals trafficking in child *advertiser censored*. Fewer than 2% of these suspects are ever investigated, as police and lawmakers focus on other priorities.
Quote:

Pursuing the 60 known Tracy child *advertiser censored* traffickers would, without question, lead to the rescue of many local children who are suffering at the hands of sexual predators, many within their own homes. If authorities follow through on their plan, they will seek 60 subpoenas and then locate and interview these individuals.

The family of Sandra Cantu plans a public memorial service once the coroner is finished with the autopsy on the slain 8-year-old.

“We felt that the Tracy community has been so loving to us and shown their love for Sandra that we need to allow them to mourn as well,” Angie Chavez, Sandra’s aunt, said today.

Chavez, 41, said the family will have a private funeral as well as a public service, possibly in a large venue, given the likelihood that it will draw a huge crowd. more at link: http://www.tracypress.com/pages/ful...get=push&instance=home_news_lead_story&open=&
