Woman in mobile home park reported missing suitcase

A Sunday school teacher said someone took her black rolling suitcase from the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park on the day 8-year-old murder victim Sandra Cantu disappeared.

It’s a huge suitcase, 28-year-old Melissa Huckaby said in a phone interview today, waterproof and charcoal-trimmed with an Eddie Bauer logo.

Police have yet to confirm whether it’s the same one found Monday morning that contained Sandra’s dead body.
Farmworkers discovered a suitcase that generally matches that description submerged in a dairy lagoon two miles north of mobile home park where Sandra lived. For the last year, after moving from Southern California, Huckaby and her 5-year-old daughter have lived there, too, with Huckaby’s grandparents, Clifford Lane Lawless and Connie Lawless, she said.

Sandra went missing on March 27, the same day and in the same late-afternoon hour that Huckaby said the black suitcase disappeared from her driveway.

Sandra had stopped at her house earlier and asked to play with her daughter, Huckaby said. But Huckaby said she didn’t want her daughter to play, because she had to pick up her toys. So Sandra left for another friend’s house, she said.

The 18 seconds of surveillance footage that shows Sandra playfully skipping by her family’s home show her on her way back to Huckaby’s home after leaving that other friend’s house, Huckaby said.

After Sandra left, her oldest sister, 11-year-old Miranda, went to Huckaby’s house, too. Huckaby asked Miranda if she could watch her daughter for her while she went down the street to the church. Connie Lawless was home, too.

Church Teacher Says Suitcase ''Stolen'' The Day Sandra Cantu Went Missing

TRACY - A Sunday school teacher who lives at the mobile home park where 8-year-old Sandra Cantu went missing from claims someone stole her black, waterproof rolling suitcase the same day the Tracy girl disappeared.

~snip~

Huckaby also says she has spent some time on the farm near the irrigation ditch where Sandra Cantu's body was discovered in suitcase that closely resembles the one she reports missing. Police won't confirm whether the suitcase Huckaby reported stolen and the one Sandra's body was found in are the same.

Church searched again

Three investigators this evening took what appeared to be a fold-up bed from a church that an FBI team had already searched two days ago in connection to the murder of 8-year-old Tracy girl Sandra Cantu.

~snip~

By this evening, the crime-scene tape was back up again, and FBI agents and police were seen on the roof, in the shed and taking a pretty big piece of evidence — about the size of a curbside garbage can — from inside the church and into a crime scene van.

Another crime-scene van parked outside the mobile home park, where police have questioned every resident several times since Sandra’s disappearance.

TRACY – By the time Sandra Cantu was reported missing two weeks ago, she was likely already dead, authorities said.
Tracy police late Friday arrested a Sunday School teacher and granddaughter of a church pastor in connection with the death of the 8-year-old girl, five days since the girl's body was found sealed inside a suitcase.
Melissa Chantel Huckaby, 28, was booked into San Joaquin County Jail early today on suspicion of kidnapping and murder, Tracy police Sgt. Tony Sheneman said.
Huckaby was arrested at 11:55 p.m. Friday at the police station after hours of questioning, Sheneman said. He could not immediately provide more details about what led investigators to the woman.
Sheneman said no additional arrests are expected in connection with Sandra’s death.

Matthew (FOX40.com): We received a comment on our SearchForSandra.com condolence section from someone claiming to be the best friend of Sandra Cantu. We'd be unable to verify if this person is the daughter of Melissa Huckaby who left that comment.

[Comment From Maria]
Was anyone aware that M Huckaby had a problem was Sandra?
5:54
Matthew (FOX40.com): Not that we know.

[Comment From Rhonda]
She was arrested on SUSPICION of murder and kidnapping. I'm wondering if someone else is involved. Considering the weight of a child in a suitcase and the bulky size , it's hard to believe she was able to quickly perform a murder/put child in suitcase, and dispose of the suitcase in the water (which would have required throwing or tossing it.)
5:56
Matthew (FOX40.com): That's more speculation that a question, and unfortunately, it can't be confirmed either way.
5:57
[Comment From Rhonda]
Does anyone know how much Sandra weighed?
5:58
Matthew (FOX40.com): Tracy police, in their missing person's description of Sandra Cantu, said approximately forty-five pounds.
