The day Christopher Watts was sentenced to three life terms in prison for murdering his wife, Shanann, and their two daughters, Shanann Watts' parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against him.

According to court documents, Shanann's parents, Frank and Sandra Rzucek, are seeking more than $100,000 from their son-in-law for killing Shanann and her daughters, 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste, in their Frederick, Colorado, home in August.

They are also suing Watts for unlawfully terminating Shanann's pregnancy, according to court documents.

Chris Watts' Mistress Googled 'Did People Hate Amber Frey?' — Referencing Scott Peterson's Lover
As police focused on killer Chris Watts after his pregnant wife and two young daughters disappeared and were found murdered in August, the woman with whom he was having an affair wondered if she’d be publicly shamed, conducting internet searches about the mistress of another infamous killer.

“Did people hate Amber Frey?” Watts’ mistress, Nichol Kessinger, typed into an Internet search, invoking the name of the woman who was having an affair with infamous killer Scott Peterson, who murdered his wife, Laci, and their unborn child in 2002.

Kessinger’s Internet searches about Frey on Aug. 19 — four days after Watts was arrested in the Aug. 13 disappearance of his family — also included queries about a book deal Frey obtained, along with Frey’s net worth, according to documents in the Watts investigation released last week by the Weld County District Attorney’s Office and obtained by PEOPLE.

The records also reveal that authorities who examined Kessinger’s phone found hours-worth of searches for “Shanann Watts” and, after the murders, a search using the phrase “can cops trace text messages.”

Chris Watts pictured in mugshot as he is transferred to prison to begin serving five life sentences | Daily Mail Online
View attachment 157244
Chris Watts was seen in a new mugshot after being transferred from the Weld County Jail to the Colorado Department of Corrections.

The convicted murderer, who is serving five life sentences without parole for the deaths of his pregnant wife Shanann and their daughters Celeste and Bella, looked emotionless in the photo, which showed him freshly shaved and without his glasses.

His grim future was spelled out in the accompanying inmate information, which revealed there would be no future parole dare or hearing for Watts.

And next to his estimated discharge date was '12/31/9998.'

At the same time, the parents of Shanann have filed a wrongful death lawsuit for the murders of their daughter, two granddaughters and the unborn grandson that Shanann was carrying at the time she was killed by her husband.

Shanann's parents are already set to receive $41,807.98 in restitution from Watts as ordered by the judge in his criminal case.

Christopher Watts transferred to new facility for physical, mental evaluation
Christopher Watts is currently at Denver Reception and Diagnostic Center, described on its website as a temporary stop:

“Offenders at this facility will not be housed there permanently, the facility will process the inmate into the department of corrections system by being physically and mental evaluated. It is at this point that the staff will determine what programs the inmate may benefit from. An educational and skills testing will take place, which will further classify the offenders needs. From all these factors the staff will determine which facility is best to house the inmate at permanently.

This facility can house up to 575 inmates. The inmates are all levels of custody because they have not yet been classified. Basic education, GED , anger management, substance abuse, and parenting courses are just some of the programs offered by this institution.”

Shanann Watts family files wrongful death suit against Chris Watts

The court filing reportedly notes Watts’s deceptions to investigators and his false claims to the media that he had no idea what happened to his wife and children.

“Defendant also gave multiple interviews to television and media outlets where he falsely claimed that he missed his family and was hoping they would all come home, so as to end his supposed ‘nightmare’ of life without his children,” the lawsuit states, according to the Coloradoan.

The report notes that according to Colorado law, wrongful death cases can be heard by a judge or a jury. A preliminary hearing is set for January 28.

Shanann Watts Pleaded with Husband to Stop 'Living the Bachelor Life' Weeks Before He Killed Her
“lf you are done, don’t love me, don’t want to work this out, not happy anymore and only staying because of kids, I NEED you to tell me,” she wrote.

“l just don’t get it. You don’t fall out of love in 5 weeks.” Minutes later she typed out, “How can you sleep? Our marriage is crumbling in front of us and you can sleep.”

Rourke said in court that in the weeks prior to her death, Shanann — who was 15 weeks pregnant — focused on saving their crumbling relationship, giving Chris books on self-help and relationship counseling. But Chris had already mentally checked out of the marriage and ignored them, said Rourke, even throwing one of the books “in the garbage.”

Rourke said at Chris’ sentencing, “While Shanann texted the defendant over and over again in the days and weeks leading up to her death attempting to save her marriage, the defendant secreted pictures of his girlfriend into his phone and searched and texted her at all hours of the night.”

And while Shanann was caring for her daughters and working at her part-time sales job, Chris spent the time going to bars, restaurants, car museums and sand dunes with his mistress, Nichol Kessinger, as well as “searching the internet for secluded vacation spots to take his new love — and researching jewelry,” Rourke said.

Shttps://www.crimeonline.com/2018/11/27/chris-watts-sent-unsettling-photo-of-a-doll-covered-by-a-sheet-to-shannan-watts-days-before-her-murder-and-his-father-tried-to-use-photo-to-claim-murdered-mom-planned-killings/
A photograph of a doll covered by a bed sheet that Chris Watts’s father claimed Shanann Watts took was actually sent to her by her husband Chris Watts, just days before her murdered Shanann and her two young daughters.

At one point, Ronnie Watts appeared to suggest that Shanann may have even planned on hurting her little girls, directing detectives to a Facebook post a few days earlier, in which Shanann had posted a photo of a doll covered almost entirely with a sheet; only its feet were sticking out. Shanann reportedly said in the Facebook post that 4-year-old Bella had arranged the doll this way.

From the discovery documents:
“RONNIE said, ‘I’m thinkin’ this might have been planned. I don’t know.’ RONNIE said the caption read, ‘What do you say to this?’ RONNIE said the sheet covered the doll’s head and the only thing sticking out was the doll’s feet. RONNIE said SHANANN commented that BELLA had put the sheet on the doll. RONNIE said a kid wouldn’t do such a thing.”

The Phone Data Review includes an image of a doll covered by a sheet, which appears to be the same image referenced by Ronnie Watts. According to the report, the image was taken from Chris’s phone and he sent it to Shanann on August 9. She replied, “Don’t know what to think about this.”

The time stamp on the text message would suggest that Chris was at work when he sent Shanann the message, and the report does not state when the photo was taken. There is no further discussion about the doll photo in the Phone Data Review.

CrimeOnline has contacted the Greeley Police Department for clarification and confirmation of some items in the report, and are awaiting a response.

Chris Watts’ wife called his parents 'evil and stupid' one week before her murder | Daily Mail Online after they gave allergic daughter NUTS and skipped her birthday

It was also revealed by Shanann's mother that Watts' parents did not attend their son's wedding

The couple subsequently blocked Shanann on Facebook and did not attend or even call their granddaughter on her birthday.

Watts sided with his wife in his response, writing: "l will call him and tell him what I think about this. lt's not *advertiser censored**ing cool at all because it is the kids. I will set this right."

Shanann: "l didn't tell your dad not to come to party. l didn't tell him not to text, or call your daughter, on her birthday. I didn't tell him to start acting like he only has two grandkids instead of 4. I didn't block your family on [Facebook], he did. Myself and your kids have nothing to say to them. They do.

These kids are my world and I have to protect them from the evil of the world. I shouldn't have to protect them from evil family. Our kids deserve the same love and attention the other kids get, nothing less."

Chris: "They should've swallowed whatever they needed to and came to Cece's Birthday Party and called her and shouldn't have blocked all social media contact with them. I don't care what they do with us, just as long as they love and respect the kids. l'm not use to not having a relationship with my dad. I should've just called him before it got to this point where it got in my head I didn't and that's my fault."

There was a different version of events however from what one Watts' friends told investigators. He said that Cindy called him crying after her fight with Shanann and that Watts told him not to worry because he was done with Shanann.

The family of Shanann Watts and her two daughters has sued their killer to prevent him from ever profiting off their deaths.

Collecting money from Christopher Watts, though, is a long shot.

"It's fairly obvious that Chris Watts doesn't have money," Steven Lambert, the family's attorney, said. "He's not OJ Simpson. We're not going to collect millions out of him."

The money would help cover funeral expenses, the loss of Shanann's income and compensate for the family's "permanent and continuing emotional distress" due to the killings, according to the lawsuit.

"Just in case 20 years down the line from now he decides to write a book we could come for that money," Lambert said.

The Rzuceks have discussed creating a charity with any money they gain from the case, Lambert said.

A ‘Heartless Monster’s’ Double Life: Why Chris Watts Murdered His Pregnant Wife and Kids
To the outside observer, Chris Watts appeared to be a doting husband and father who loved being around his family. Living in an upscale home in Frederick, Colorado, he seemed upbeat in online videos with his wife, Shanann.

But there was another side to Watts that even those closest to him didn’t know. His double life was exposed when he was charged with the August murders of Shanann 34, who was 15 weeks pregnant, and their daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3. The brutality of the crime — to which Watts later pleaded guilty and received a life sentence in prison without parole — shocked even the most seasoned investigators.

“This was the most horrific case that I’ve ever done,” Weld County Prosecutor Michael Rourke tells PEOPLE. “I think you combine the horrible facts of Shanann being pregnant and two little girls being killed as well, and then the horrifying condition in which their bodies were disposed — I think all those things together just sickened everyone who had anything to do with it.”

After the shocking violence, those close to the couple are left searching for answers about a man they thought they knew.

“I am still struggling to understand how and why this tragedy occurred,” Watts’ mother, Cindy, said in court at Watts’ sentencing. “I may never be able to understand and accept it, but I pray for peace and healing for all of us.”

See Photos of 'Monster' Chris Watts & Mistress — Who Searched for Wedding Dresses Days Before Murders
The images show a playful, affectionate couple.

Except that one of them, Chris Watts, was married and his wife was pregnant with the couple’s third child. Despite this, the woman pictured alongside him, Nichol Kessinger, spent “over two hours” searching Google for wedding dresses just nine days before Watts killed his wife and two daughters, according to newly released investigative documents in the case obtained by PEOPLE.

Watts had told Kessinger he was separated and finalizing a mutual divorce after they met at work in late June, Kessinger told The Denver Post, adding, “I believed him.”

Yet the new documents — more than 2,000 pages released by the Weld County, Colorado, District Attorney’s Office after Watts pleaded guilty and was sentenced this month for the murders — offer new context for Kessinger’s statement.

On July 24, Kessinger Google-searched the phrase “Man I’m having affair with says he will leave his wife.”

On Aug. 8 Kessinger searched Google on topics relating to “marrying your mistress.”

And on Aug. 4 at 12:45 a.m., “for over two hours Kessinger searched Google for wedding dresses,” according to her web history analyzed by investigators.

Chris Watts' mistress was searching for wedding dresses a week before murders, Googled 'anal sex' | Daily Mail Online
  • Investigators searched the phone of Nichol Kessinger with her permission and uncovered a number of shocking Google searches
  • Kessinger spent two hours searching the internet for wedding dresses a week before Chris Watts murdered his family
  • She also searched 'how to prepare for anal sex' and 'the anal sex guide' prior to her last date with Watts, which was the night before the murders
  • Days after the family was killed she looked up the net worth of Amber Frey and how much she got in her book deal
  • Frey was the mistress of Scott Peterson during the time that he killed his wife Laci and their unborn child
  • Watts meanwhile had multiple nude photos of Kessinger hidden away in a secret calculator app on his phone, accessible only by a four-digit code
The final Google search conducted by Kessinger that was noted by investigators came after the murders of August 19 when she looked into how much money Amber Frey made in her book deal and her net worth, while also searching 'did people hate Amber Frey.'

A search of Watts' phone meanwhile found thousands of hidden photos in a secret calculator app that was only accessed by typing in a four digit code.

A number of those pics showed a nude or semi-naked Kessinger.

Chris Watts girlfriend searched for Shanann Watts online nearly a year before the murders and long before her affair with Chris Watts began: Report
Kessinger reportedly offered her phone to investigators, but had deleted all text messages between her and Watts as well as any entry for him in her contacts.

The Phone Data Review examined text messages, voice calls, voicemail messages, and online searches that may have been relevant to the investigation. The first entry in the chronological report that includes data from all three devices is from Kessinger’s phone; it states that Kessinger performed an online search for the name Shanann Watts in September 2017.

CrimeOnline has noted in its review of the extensive documents, which were compiled by multiple law enforcement agencies, a few instances in which a date appears to have been entered incorrectly. The above entry, however, appears to be the only questionable date in the chronological Phone Data Review.

CrimeOnline has reached out to the Greeley Police Department for clarification or confirmation of the information listed in the entry, and has not yet received a response.

Where could Chris Watts serve his three consecutive life sentences?
Larry Nutter, a retired Colorado Department of Corrections captain and retired licensed psychotherapist said the staff is giving him IQ tests and personality inventories just like every other inmate before him.

"They are determining how dangerous he is," Nutter said.

Nutter said staff looks for red flags and said the biggest one they look for is violence. How violent he is will determine where he'll spend his sentences.

Nutter believes he'll go to a Level III or Level IV facility.

"What kind of people is he going to be housed around? The people that did the same sorts of things," Nutter said.

We've seen in Colorado inmates having to be moved out of state for their own safety, like Aurora theater shooter, James Holmes.

While Nutter acknowledges the severity of the crimes Watts committed, he believes Watts will serve his sentence in Colorado.

SEE IT: Chris Watts sent unsettling photo of a doll covered by a sheet to Shannan Watts days before her murder — and his father tried to use photo to claim murdered pregnant mom ‘planned’ killings
At one point, Ronnie Watts appeared to suggest that Shanann may have even planned on hurting her little girls, directing detectives to a Facebook post a few days earlier, in which Shanann had posted a photo of a doll covered almost entirely with a sheet; only its feet were sticking out.

According to the documents, Ronnie told the detectives that he had seen Bella arrange her dolls before, but that he never seen her cover their heads. The detectives asked Chris Watts what he cold recall of the incident, and he said that Shanann thought it was funny. He also said he couldn’t remember if it was Bella who placed the sheet over the doll.

Fact Check: Did Christopher Watts have another affair?
Weld County District Attorney’s Office officials say a widely reported relationship between convicted murderer Christopher Watts and a male escort amounts to little more than online rumors.

Investigators from FBI and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation interviewed Bolte and others who could have backed up his story, but they were largely unable to substantiate his claims.
TrentBolte-GDT-112918-206x300.png

Trent Bolte (Facebook)

Bolte called The Tribune on Wednesday claiming to have evidence of his relationship with Watts, including text messages and photos. Despite repeated requests for the evidence, Bolte had not produced anything to The Tribune as of 11 a.m. Thursday.

Responding to another reporter who asked whether any rumors were disruptive to investigators’ processes, Rourke responded, “All of them are disruptive to our process, and I don’t say that crassly.”
