Shanann Watts' father, Frank Rzucek was the first to speak at Chris Watts' sentencing hearing, calling his son-in-law "an evil monster" for what he did to Shanann, Bella, Celeste and their unborn son, Nico.

Sandra Rzucek, the mother of Shanann Watts, spoke at Chris Watts' sentencing this morning, telling the man accused of killing her daughter and granddaughters: "We loved you like a son. We trusted you. Your faithful wife trusted you. Your children adored you and they also trusted you."

Speaking at their son's sentencing hearing, Cindy and Ronnie Watts said they now accept that their son is guilty of killing his wife and daughters and they hope he will give a full confession and take responsibility.

Denver Dad Chris Watts Gets Life in Prison as Attorneys Reveal Daughter Fought for Her Life
Shanann repeatedly texted her husband in the days before the murder, desperately trying to save their marriage, Rourke added. She sent him self-help and relationship counseling books, one of which police discovered in the trash.

All the while, Watts was busy scouring the Internet for vacation spots to take his new girlfriend, whom he took to car museums and sand dunes while Shanann and their kids visited family in North Carolina over the summer.

The morning his family vanished, Rourke said, he called his daughters’ school to disenroll them, as well as a realtor to discuss selling his house. “And he texted with his girlfriend about their future,” Rourke continued.

“If he was this happy and wanted a new start, get a divorce. You don’t annihilate your family and throw them away like garbage,” Rourke fumed. “Why did Nico, Celeste, Bella and Shanann have to lose their lives in order for him to get what he wanted?”

The day after his family vanished, Watts gave a bizarre interview to Denver7, pleading for their return—an interview Rourke described as “emotionless.”

Chris Watts Gets Life in Prison for Killing Daughters and Pregnant Wife
Michael J. Rourke, the Weld County District Attorney, laid out the gruesome details of the murders.

“The man seated to my right smothered his daughters,” Mr. Rourke said in the courtroom. “Bella fought back for her life,” he added, explaining that her frenulum was lacerated because she bit her tongue multiple times before she died.

Mr. Rourke said that Mr. Watts squeezed his daughters’ bodies through an 8-inch opening as he hid them in an oil tank.

“A tuft of blonde hair was found in the entrance of the tank,” Mr. Rourke said. One of the girls had scratches on her buttocks from being squeezed into the tank, Mr. Rourke added, as Mr. Watts, seated behind him in an orange jumpsuit, cried.

“I did not want death for you because that is not my right,” said Sandra Rzucek, Ms. Watts’s mother.

“In the end, the Rzucek family was much more merciful toward him than he was toward them,” Mr. Rourke, the prosecutor, said.

‘Bella fought back for her life’: Prosecutor reveals details of grisly Chris Watts family killings for the first time at Colorado father’s sentencing hearing
The prosecutor said that motive for the killings was Chris’s desire to start a new life with his girlfriend; a woman who, as CrimeOnlinepreviously reported, falsely believed that Chris and Shannan were divorced and went to investigators prior to his arrest after she became suspicious that he may have been involved in his family’s disappearance.

Rourke reportedly said that Shannan, who had returned from a business trip the morning of her death, had been contacting Chris via text message with efforts to save their relationship, and sent him self-help and counseling books. It is not clear if Shannan knew about the affair, but Rourke’s account indicates that she was aware the marriage was in trouble. The prosecutor said that Chris continued to communicate with his girlfriend throughout Shannan’s attempts to communicate with him, texting his girlfriend late into the night. He reportedly threw one of the books in the garbage.

The day of the murder, after Chris had disposed of his wife and daughters’ bodies, he reportedly made three phone calls: To his girlfriend, to a realtor to discuss selling his house, and to Bella and Celeste’s school asking to un-enroll them. Co-workers reportedly said Chris acted completely normally the day of the murders.

Autopsy reports released in Chris Watts case
The reports concluded that all three victims died of asphyxiation — Shanann was strangled while the two girls were smothered, according to the reports.

The autopsy reports state that Shanann Watts was found in a purple T-shirt and underwear. She had patterned abrasions on her neck and the left side of her face when her body was found. Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said during sentencing Monday that the lack of significant injuries to Shanann Watts suggested that her death came slowly.

Bella’s report indicates she had a pink pajama-type top with images of hearts and butterflies and underwear on when her body was found. The coroner found blunt force trauma on Bella’s jaw and lacerations and contusions in her mouth. Her left shoulder was discolored, and teeth impressions and superficial bite marks were found on the surface of Bella’s tongue — signs, Rourke said, Bella "fought for her life."

Celeste was found in a pink and black T-shirt. The 3-year-old was wearing a diaper and underwear. Celeste had no visible injuries.

Prosecutors and police discuss new details in Chris Watts case, what comes next for him and families
Rourke said he spoke with Judge Marcelo Kopcow Sunday ahead of the sentencing hearing to give him more information, including the unredacted affidavit, so that the court could impose a “just and fair sentence under the circumstances.”

He alluded to what he said in court Monday about how long it took to strangle a person, as Watts did to Shanann. In court Monday, Rourke also unveiled that Watts had smothered Bella and Celeste. “That demonstrates an incredible intent to cause someone’s death. He did that three times. To say this was anything other than an intentional, deliberate killing is inaccurate, to say the least,” Rourke said. “Because of the fantastic work done by the medical examiner in giving information in a responsible, medically-accurate way, we know that’s not what happened.”

Rourke said investigators found through Watts’ Google searches, cell phone searches, and trips he made and planned while Shanann and her daughters were visiting North Carolina that Watts “found a new love interest.” That included a trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park, a planned vacation in the mountains and dates at Denver-area restaurants. Rourke said Shanann had received credit card notifications for some of the transactions while she was away.

Rourke said investigators were able to track Watts’ movements on the morning of the killings because of a GPS tracker hooked up to his work truck, which he used to get around that morning and to transport his wife and daughters’ bodies. He also said that sheets missing from the couple’s bed that were found at the site the bodies were dumped helped link Watts to the murders.

The family also filed a civil lawsuit Monday to try and keep Chris Watts from benefiting from the story or the case in the future, the family’s attorney and the court confirmed Friday afternoon.

"He cannot profit from any inheritance that he would normally receive from Shanann," said attorney Steven Lambert. "On top of that, any proceed that he might derive from a sale of a book, he would not be able to keep any of that. Also any assets that he might receive once we get a judgment from the court, we can file any liens and get things like that on any assets from here into the future."

Chris Watts’ Neighbor ‘Relieved’ Over Life Sentence: 'I Hope He’s Killed In Prison!’
CH, who lives two doors down from Watts, 33, in Frederick, Colorado, told Radar that she was in tears when she heard the news. Despite Watts being sentenced to life at the Colorado state prison, CH believes he should’ve been given the death penalty.

“I just wish we had the death penalty,” she said. “I hope somebody kills him in prison. It’s just wasted space. This guy killed kids, he was just really bad. Nobody understands why he had to kill them.”

CH previously told Radar that the crazed killer had come to her house before to help her move some furniture, adding that he seemed “perfectly normal.”

“I’m relieved to know that he will never be out again. We are happy that our neighborhood is safer,” she admitted. “He won’t be coming to this neighborhood in my lifetime.”

Shan'ann Watts Confronted Chris Multiple Times About Suspicions of Affair Before He Murdered Her
Before she and her daughters were killed by her husband Chris, Shan’ann Watts confronted him repeatedly over her suspicions he was having an affair.

District Attorney Michael Rourke said Shan’ann picked up on “a lot of suspicious behavior” by Chris. He said she received credit card phone notifications when she was in North Carolina for Chris’ restaurant tabs in Colorado that were likely for more than one person. “We know she confronted him about that numerous times,” said Rourke. “We know that he was never completely forthcoming with her.”

Rourke said in court that in the weeks prior to her death, Shan’ann — who was 15 weeks pregnant — tried to salvage their crumbling relationship, giving Chris books on self-help and relationship counseling. But Chris had already mentally checked out of the marriage and ignored them, said Rourke, even throwing one of the books “in the garbage.”

Rourke said in court on Monday, “While Shan’ann texted the defendant over and over again in the days and weeks leading up to her death attempting to save her marriage, the defendant secreted pictures of his girlfriend into his phone and searched and texted her at all hours of the night.”

And while Shan’ann was caring for her daughters and working at her part-time sales job, Chris spent the time going to bars, restaurants, car museums and sand dunes with Kessinger as well as “searching the internet for secluded vacation spots to take his new love — and researching jewelry,” Rourke said.

“The stark contrast between the subjects of their internet and text content is absolutely stunning,” he added.

Convicted murderer quiet on why he killed wife, daughters :: WRAL.com
Christopher Watts cried, shook and stared into his lap as a judge told him he would spend the rest of his life in prison for the murders of his pregnant wife and their two young daughters.

But he spoke only once at his sentencing hearing and that was to decline the opportunity to give a statement and perhaps answer the question gnawing at his relatives, his suburban Denver neighbors, and others: Why?

Judge Marcelo Kopcow called it "the most inhumane and vicious crime" to cross his desk in 17 years.

As a prosecutor detailed the injuries at Monday's hearing, Shanann Watts' father Frank Rzucek leaned forward, gasping.

Jennifer Kovaleski, Denver 7 - Interview with District Attorney, Michael Rourke

"I didn't see a shred of remorse today. I didn't when he pled guilty on November 6th. I never did during any of the course of this investigation, any of the interviews with him. I think he shed a tear for himself. I think he thought he was gonna get away with it."

"His [CW'S] statement to investigators was, 'They were very clearly, obviously dead so I decided to dispose of their bodies.'"

Chris Watts Still Hasn't Come Clean About Murdering His Entire Family — and He Might Never
Chris Watts has only ever told police one story about the morning that he murdered his entire family.

“If he wants to talk now, it’s on his own,” Rourke says, “but it’s not a condition of the plea nor is it a part of our agreement.”

He explains that both he and Shan’ann’s family agreed that forcing Chris to make a public confession could put them “in a position where we were listening to some concocted BS story, just to try to satisfy the plea agreement.”

“The Rzuceks [Shan’ann’s family] were of the opinion that he would never be able to give us a full version — just because of who he is — he would never tell us the truth,” Rourke says.

“I don’t think that there is ever going to be a satisfactory answer for anyone,” he said.

‘About as big as it gets:’ Gravity of lifetime sentence for Watts not lost on Weld DA
AP18323669109151-768x518.jpg
"We tried to be really cognizant of the people who were in the courtroom who had never heard any of this," Rourke said, adding the evidence he presented Monday is still an abbreviated version of all of the facts in the case. "We talked about the point where we thought we would get an emotional response from the gallery and that's exactly what we got when I said the girls had been smothered."

But Rourke said it was essential to go into some of those graphic details because Judge Kopcow needed to know the sentence the district attorney's office was asking for was appropriate given the nature of the crime.

It struck a particularly painful chord when photos of the oil tanks were relayed to his office. One of the photos is of an open hatch at the top of a crude oil tank. An investigator had placed a ruler across the opening to very clearly show it was only eight inches in diameter.

"I remember thinking, 'This can't possibly be true," Rourke said. "Then you look and you realize there's really no other way into that tank."

"Then you have the cold, callous way he described how he held them up by their wrists and put them down feet first, and knew Bella's tank was more full than Celeste's because of the sound the splash made," Rourke said. "Are you kidding me? Those are your kids."

"The day he hit the jail, he tried to call his dad once, but for some reason the call didn't go through," Rourke said. "He didn't make another phone call. We checked everyday to listen to his jail calls. He didn't call anyone."

Documents: Shanann Watts' mother suspected Christopher Watts of using oil to dispose of bodies shortly after disappearance
Shanann Watts' mother contacted Frederick police the day after her daughter and two grandchildren were reported missing to tell an investigator she suspected her son-in-law, Christopher Watts, planned on pouring oil on the bodies of his wife and daughters to dispose of them.

Watts, by that time in police custody, was given a copy of the photograph to show investigators where he had left the bodies. He wrote his daughters' initials on each of the two oil tanks, and an "S" for Shanann on a patch of bare ground near the oil tanks where her body was buried, according to the documents released Wednesday.

A coworker of Christopher Watts told FBI investigators that on Aug. 13, she and Watts had been assigned to work at the Anadarko site where the bodies were later recovered. She told investigators that when she and a third coworker arrived at the site, Watts was already on scene and digging a small hole near an oil tank.

The coworker told investigators that Watts greeted everyone, explained what was going on with some equipment at the site and then talked about a Colorado Rockies game he said he had attended the previous Saturday. The coworker said nothing seemed amiss about Watts, but he didn't take as much care to clean equipment as he usually did.

The third coworker told an FBI investigator that Watts wasn't acting out of the ordinary, but that Watts became concerned after he said he received a call that the burglar alarm at his house was going off. He left the site saying he had to take care of the alarm.

DA Releases 2,000+ Pages In Chris Watts Murder Case, Revealing Texts With Wife
In response to a Colorado Criminal Justice Records request, CBS4 News received more than 2,000 pages of documents from the Weld County District Attorney in the Chris Watts case.

In a phone search conducted by authorities, investigators found searches on Kessinger’s phone for sexual videos and positions, hours’ worth of searches for “Shanann Watts,” searches including “can cops trace text messages” after the murders, searches for Amber Frey (the mistress of convicted murderer Scott Peterson), if “people hate Amber Frey,” and Frey’s subsequent book deal.

On August 15, Chris Watts submitted to Frederick Police for a polygraph test. He came in loose clothing and no wedding ring. Testers determined he was lying during the polygraph.

In an unclassified interview with the FBI, a friend of Shanann details specific relationship issues that she and Chris were having, and several instances of issues with Chris’s parents.

“While in North Carolina, Celeste had a birthday party. Chris’s mother and father didn’t show up, and also didn’t text Shanann or Chris. Since that time, Chris started to get distant from Shanann.

“Chris told Shanann that they were no longer compatible. Chris told her he didn’t want the baby; he just wanted it to be the two girls. Chris told her he wasn’t sure if he wanted a third child. Shanann asked Chris why he wanted another child if he felt that way about her. He said he thought it would fix the relationship. … Prior to the North Carolina trip, Shanann and Chris were both happy, and Chris was excited about the baby.
